To ask which city you'd move to in England if you didn't live there already

I am thinking about it. Would prefer not London tbh although appreciate that's where the jobs are (and in some ways it's probably the easiest fit for outsiders).

Where is friendly, has stuff to do, jobs and the like. I think my answer is going to end up being Newcastle (but I like York).

Liverpool

HoppityBun · 18/07/2026 19:09

Shrewsbury, Alnmouth and, in Wales, Carmarthen

Badbadbunny · 18/07/2026 19:09

York, but it's now become unaffordable due to popularity sadly. Also now far too busy with stag/hen parties at weekends. Still probably the only place I'd seriously think of moving to/

Richmond/Kingston/Kew but would need lots more £££

London.

Portsmouth - I love the boats, the maritime history, the access to the IoW. I go there a lot

Pieceofpurplesky · 18/07/2026 19:13

I live in Chester and love it. It has everything I need from theatre and restaurants to jobs and countryside! Easy access to Manchester and Liverpool and a train to London in less than 2 hours.
If I had to choose another it would probably be St David's! If I had to choose a city with shops and stuff it would probably be Salisbury or Stirling

Happyjoe · 18/07/2026 19:13

Brighton. Moved away many years ago and would go back. Well, perhaps something like Rottingdean instead. I liked living in London too, some of it and the hospitals are better.

Lived in a few cities up North, stunning countryside but just hardly any decent weather.

BlueMum16 · 18/07/2026 19:13

I already live near my favourite, Liverpool but next choice would be Newcastle.

Visited for many years when DSis was at university and the people are so friendly and love the city centre/shops plus not far from the coast

If I wasn’t in love with London I’d be tempted by Lancaster.

DandelionClockSeeds · 18/07/2026 19:16

Liverpool

Agreed. Came up for Uni, never left the area although I’m not in the city itself now.
Absolutely love it, and it’s changed for the better since I first arrived.
So much on in terms of art, music and theatre, there is always something going on culturally.
Whenever we have friends staying who have never been and we take them in, they can’t believe how beautiful it is. The waterfront is gorgeous.
The people are really what makes it.
Oh and if you like football…..!

AlwaysExtraHot · 18/07/2026 19:17

If I wasn’t allowed to live in London any more, I’d probably go to Glasgow. Used to live there and loved it. There’s loads going on, people are friendly and hilarious, and parts of it are very beautiful.

GucciBear · 18/07/2026 19:18

Bath.

Doseofreality · 18/07/2026 19:18

Liverpool. I married a Scouser and I fall more in love with that City every time I visit.

AnonymityAnonymity · 18/07/2026 19:19

Well so far 2 posters have said Edinburgh.
Don't know whether they are being sarcastic or ignorant..

Having lived in Scotland for over 50 years my first thought would be do I really want to move back to Englsnd given all the changes there have been since I last lived there?

And my second thought is whereas somewhere like York , which I used to be familiar with and like, would be an easy answer. I don't really know it now. And there are so many other places I have never been to which might be choices worth considering only I am ignorant about them.

Norwich - lived there for a few years in my mid to late 20s and I'd go back in a heartbeat.

FishPie2 · 18/07/2026 19:24

Liverpool at the top of the list - then Chester or Leeds.

Westfacing · 18/07/2026 19:26

I'd return to Liverpool which I left for London 50 years ago

Sminty2 · 18/07/2026 19:26

Salisbury or Winchester
