AIBU to think secretly recording friends is a major breach of trust?

I met two friends for coffee this morning, one of whom I’ve known for years, the other one I only met last year but we’ve become close and introduced them a few months ago. We’d been chatting for about half an hour when the one I’ve known longer went to the loo leaving her handbag on the chair.

When she came back she picked her bag up and accidentally dropped it on the floor, her phone fell out and the screen lit up. At a quick glance it looked like the Voice Memos app and there was recording in progress as I could clearly see a timer counting up.

She grabbed it very quickly, locked the screen and put it back in her bag. I didn’t say anything because I was so taken aback.

After we said goodbye to the other friend about half an hour later, I psyched myself up the courage and asked her why she was voice recording us. She looked embarrassed and admitted she’d started recording before she went to the toilet because she wanted to make sure we weren’t talking about her while she was gone. She said she was jealous and worried about being replaced by my new friend as she’d had experiences of being abandoned in the past.

I honestly didn’t know what to say. On one hand, I feel quite sad for her if she genuinely feels that anxious. On the other, I think secretly recording your friends, even for that reason, is a huge breach of trust.

AIBU to think this is a massive breach of trust, or am I catastrophising?

It is unreasonable, of course, but I’d be compassionate to someone with that level of anxiety.

outerspacepotato · 18/07/2026 14:43

Holy shit!

I'd be staying away from her. Huge trust breach is right. That's creepy AF.

I'd tell other friend you're distancing from recording friend and why.

InveterateWineDrinker · 18/07/2026 14:43

If you're in the UK, I'm pretty certain it's illegal too. Nobody who did this would be my friend for long.

Myoldbear · 18/07/2026 14:45

Think to yourself if she may have any reason to feel insecure. If you feel you're always a good friend then she is unreasonable.

But also if you're a good friend you will probably make allowances for her sensitivity and overlook this.

ExtremelyLargeClock · 18/07/2026 14:45

That’s illegal and she’s crazy. I’d not be seeing her again.

cheesecakesaturday · 18/07/2026 14:48

@InveterateWineDrinker @ExtremelyLargeClock really? It’s illegal, I didn’t know that!

@outerspacepotato It’s definitely creeped me out and I do feel disrespected but I’ve known her a long time.

Is it definitely illegal? As far as I know anyone can record/ film in public.

MrsTomRipley · 18/07/2026 14:50

It's not illegal. But it's weird.

BillieWiper · 18/07/2026 14:54

That is deeply bizarre. And if you introduced her to the other person then she'd basically got one extra friend. So she's better off, not worse?

Who's to say she couldn't pair off with you or the other one and dump the third? It just seems paranoid and childish and really a bit mad.

Megifer · 18/07/2026 14:54

It is not illegal.

It is very questionable and bizarre behaviour though and id find it very hard to trust her again.

Sparrowsandbudgies · 18/07/2026 14:55

It’s pretty weird behaviour but I’d just laugh and probably feel sorry for her that she feels that insecure.

outerspacepotato · 18/07/2026 14:55

I'd be straight up and tell her I think her secretly recording you is creepy, not very friendly, and I'm feeling kind of violated that she was secretly recording us and I don't want to see her again.

That kind of anxiety needs professional help and I would not cater to that at all.

MistakenFlutterby · 18/07/2026 14:56

I wouldn’t care how anxious she was, that is well over the line of acceptable behaviour.

I’m not sure I could forgive that.

Backedoffhackedoff · 18/07/2026 14:57

It’s not illegal no. Even if it was I suspect you weren’t going to sue her 😂

OP I am really struggling to connect with your “breach of trust” issue. It sounds so corporate and formal. Of course it’s ok to be pissed off that someone thinks you’ll bitch behind their back. But they obviously don’t trust you (and maybe they don’t trust any one!) so what is the breach of trust from your perspective?

the person sounds deeply unhappy and likely in a position were they’re at least a little mentally unwell now. I would be annoyed, but also quite worried about them.

Snoff · 18/07/2026 14:57

No, I wouldn't be friends with someone who secretly recorded me for any reason, or someone who tried to 'catch me out' in any other way.

Friendship requires a level of trust. She is both mistrustful of you, and can't be trusted herself. That would be it for me.

Lockupyourbiscuits · 18/07/2026 14:58

Its a breach of your trust to record you without consent
She needs to go and get some help from counselling as it sounds like her self esteem is in her boots - this isn’t the way to conduct relationships
It will need some thought if you are remaining friends how to navigate against a repeat occurrence

does the other person know ?

Duckagogo · 18/07/2026 14:59

Run the fuck away. She's a dangerous lunatic.

adragoncalledaudrey · 18/07/2026 14:59

I would be retreating.

No-one needs that sort of carry-on in their lives.

2dogsandabudgie · 18/07/2026 14:59

I'd have laughed and called her an idiot and next time we met up would say "now you're not recording this time are you"?

Backedoffhackedoff · 18/07/2026 15:00

Duckagogo · 18/07/2026 14:59

wtf?! 🤣 what’s dangerous lunatic about recording a conversation because you think they’ll be bitching about you?

ElvesDoNotWalkintheDarkEarth · 18/07/2026 15:01

Just because she has anxiety doesn't mean she gets to invade other people's privacy! That's abusive behaviour.

I'd be worried about what else she has been recording and what else she would stoop to in the future.

Sorry but I wouldn't want to continue this friendship as it's a massive breach of trust. You are not her therapist and it's not your job to fix her. Your feelings matter too.

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePleaseBarista · 18/07/2026 15:04

I would view her very differently moving forward regardless of her reasoning.

Duckagogo · 18/07/2026 15:07

Backedoffhackedoff · 18/07/2026 15:00

wtf?! 🤣 what’s dangerous lunatic about recording a conversation because you think they’ll be bitching about you?

wtf?! 😂Imagine pretending you don't know that it's dangerous lunacy to sneak around taping people who trusted you, breaching their right to privacy with the intent to do who knows what with their private conversation because you're so batshit and desperately jealous that you're terrified someone might like another person more than you.

Imagine pretending you don't know that this absolutely screams personality disorder.

Imagine pretending you don't know that a person capable of this breach of trust is sly, cunning, underhanded and untrustworthy.

Imagine pretending you don't know that a person who was caught doing this isn't capable of far worse.

ExtremelyLargeClock · 18/07/2026 15:11

Her head is in a toxic place that she has given herself the right to invade other peoples privacy to that extent. I have been creeped out in the past by Facebook friends liking my other friends posts.. people that they don’t know. Creeping on people is very distasteful to me. Invasion of boundaries that should be respected.

ElenOfTheWays · 18/07/2026 15:14

I wonder why a previous friend might have "abandoned" her?
<scratches head>
It's baffling really.
