AIBU to suggest my husband takes the box room when we move?

Aibu to give the smallest bedroom to my husband? We’re moving house. It’s for 2 years. My husband and I have separate bedrooms because of his snoring. The new house has 3 double rooms and one box room. Our two children really want a double room each and to be far they’re 18 and 17 and will be hanging out in their bedrooms the majority of time. My husband literally only sleeps in his bedroom, while I spend loads of time working in my bedroom. It seems obvious to me that he should get the box room but he won’t hear of it. I instigated the move so he’s not thrilled in general.

Maybe this will be the impetus for him to sort out his snoring! Why is he unhappy about the move?

Cafog · 18/07/2026 09:28

I would probably have the double bedroom as "our" bedroom, and take it in turns to sleep in the box room depending on your work schedule. Then it's noones "room" as such, just a room that one of you sleep in.

PurpleThistle7 · 18/07/2026 09:29

Does the box room have a window? If not it’s hugely unreasonable to use for sleeping regularly.

Noshadelamp · 18/07/2026 09:30

What does he propose? Suggest he sleep on the sofa as an alternative because a box room isn't really suitable for hanging out in and having friends over for the dcs,

All he has to do is sleep in the room. The box room sounds perfect.

olympicsrock · 18/07/2026 09:30

No , your husband is an adult paying for the house. Why should he have the box room?

Fine if he is happy with that but he may want storage space for his stuff too. The DC will move out soon and can have more space then .

Wishimaywishimight · 18/07/2026 09:30

I wouldn't appreciate being 'relegated' to the box room tbh.

ChalkOutlines · 18/07/2026 09:32

IANBU to suggest it. IABU to insist he does and refuse to accept he doesn’t want to. Unless he’s some abusive, useless , cocklodger , in which case why stay married at all?

Vaxtable · 18/07/2026 09:32

I would tell him that he hadn’t sorted his snoring out, he only uses the room to sleep in, and the kids and you get the better-rooms

if he doesn’t like it then sort the snoring

Blimey! Do you not like him? How long til the divorce?

NoArmaniNoPunani · 18/07/2026 09:34

I took the box room so my kids could each have a big room. It's worked out really well.

Why would a small bedroom not have a window?

If your husband is working and paying for his house, then no-he gets a say in what room he has. I think the pp had a good idea-you share a double room and the box room has a spare bed in it for snoring sleep purposes.

LuckyHazelFox · 18/07/2026 09:35

Or, alternatively, you could take the box room.

dancingdeidre · 18/07/2026 09:35

If it's just for sleeping, you can have the box room. You can still work in the bedroom.

StupidCupid50 · 18/07/2026 09:36

It does seem a bit mean if he didn’t want to move anyway

So in other words, the snorer's victim will have to move there on an ad hoc basis since the snorer himself obviously isn't bothered. Hugely unreasonable.

SummerHols2026 · 18/07/2026 09:37

Isn’t this what rock, paper, scissors was made for?!

ShetlandishMum · 18/07/2026 09:38

My husband would yes but if yours won't you will have to share differently.

Bushmillsbabe · 18/07/2026 09:38

What is his suggestion?
Is the 18 year old moving out soon for uni?
Why are you moving, what is your current bedroom set up, and didn't you plan who having which room when chose house?

villadicance · 18/07/2026 09:39

Your kids "really want" big rooms. So do you. Why is it him who has to compromise when he didn't even want to move?

You sound like you despise him.

I think the obvious compromise is that you share the biggest room and the box room just has a bed.

My DH snores too - it's a pain. But it's not fully in his control. He has been investigated for sleep apnoea (told he doesn't have it after a full sleep study), he isn't overweight, he has tried the standard things (wedge pillow, mouth guard all that). He still snores very loudly. It isn't something you can just overcome with some willpower

FiveMetresUp · 18/07/2026 09:39

If I were your DH, I would take the box room. DC need larger rooms and if you work in yours, you do, too.

Why would it not have a window? It’s usually the term for the smallest bedroom in the house, so a single with not much room for more than a bed and a small amount of other furniture

It could not be classed as a bedroom in the estate agent’s marketing if it didn’t have a window as not habitable space. Therefore would have been marketed as a three bed house. Hopefully OP isn’t buying a house that doesn’t have enough bedrooms for the whole family to sleep in?

sittingonabeach · 18/07/2026 09:42

Why is it for only 2 years? What are sleeping arrangements now?

shoesandshipsandsealingwax · 18/07/2026 09:42

So he doesn't want to move (but is presumably paying to do so to make you happy), and you want to shove him in a box room? Confused

Megifer · 18/07/2026 09:43

Hes being a selfish arse. Its not a given your DC will move out any time soon and he just needs a bed. What a knob.
