AIBU to suggest my husband takes the box room when we move?

Aibu to give the smallest bedroom to my husband? We’re moving house. It’s for 2 years. My husband and I have separate bedrooms because of his snoring. The new house has 3 double rooms and one box room. Our two children really want a double room each and to be far they’re 18 and 17 and will be hanging out in their bedrooms the majority of time. My husband literally only sleeps in his bedroom, while I spend loads of time working in my bedroom. It seems obvious to me that he should get the box room but he won’t hear of it. I instigated the move so he’s not thrilled in general.

so you are both paying for it. As in he is paying - presumably the children don't pay? - and gets the shitty room?
cop on - you are pushing this, and you will push him away.

Frankly with your attitude, he is better off without you anyway.

Have you noticed that OP hasn't come back and said "I love him dearly. I need to solve this dilemma. I want this to work for everyone"
It's all about what she and the DC want.

The obvious solution is don't rent this house, find a more suitable one but OP has gone ahead and done it anyway and DH can suck it up

I noticed that she came back and said they could both share the two spaces.

Perhaps DH could spend a bit of time thinking about the others as well.

Could you have the box room and use his bedroom as an office in the day?

saffy2 · 18/07/2026 19:24

A dental mouth guard could change your life drastically.
i wish my partner had taken it seriously years ago. But his dental
mouth guard has stopped his snoring completely and we are sharing a room
fpr the first time in 8 years!!!

Really sad separate bedrooms.. ever heard of earplugs?

From experience, earplugs don’t cut it with a dedicated snorer!

chocoluv · 18/07/2026 19:55

Does your DH get any say in his own life?

Why are you making all of the decisions?

You both work so he must be paying for something, therefore he gets as much say as you.

If you’re adamant that both teens get a double room, then you need to have the single room.
You can still work in DHs room during the day.

pollymere · 18/07/2026 19:56

Our boxroom was literally set up as a room for one of us to sleep in when my husband snores. His clothing etc is in our bedroom.

caringcarer · 18/07/2026 20:02

Why are you buying a house that can't accommodate all of your needs/wishes for a reasonable sized bedroom? If your DH pays towards mortgage he should have as much right as you at having a double bedroom. If you put a double bed in boxroom would there be any room at all left? Why should an adult paying towards mortgage sleep in a single bed? You could take the boxroom as you want to move and still work in main bedroom.

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 18/07/2026 20:24

I would say the house isn't suitable for your needs and find another with more evenly sized bedrooms.

dcthatsme · 18/07/2026 21:28

I live with a chronic snorer. I am a light sleeper on the whole. We share a bedroom - the only reason I haven’t killed him by now is thanks to silicone earplugs. Honestly they are a godsend.

olympicsrock · 18/07/2026 09:30

No , your husband is an adult paying for the house. Why should he have the box room?

Fine if he is happy with that but he may want storage space for his stuff too. The DC will move out soon and can have more space then .

My DF slept in the box room for quite a few years due to his snoring....even though he paid for the house....because it made sense and because he was grown up about it....

Pistachiocake · 18/07/2026 21:39

If my husband was making me move when I didn't want to, and then making me have the worst room, most of our friends and family would be having a go at him.

Blagdoncobbles · 18/07/2026 22:50

Cafog · 18/07/2026 09:28

I would probably have the double bedroom as "our" bedroom, and take it in turns to sleep in the box room depending on your work schedule. Then it's noones "room" as such, just a room that one of you sleep in.

I'd do this.

Besidemyselfwithworry · 18/07/2026 22:53

It sounds like you should have got a 4 bed house!

TiredFishNoSleep · 19/07/2026 00:36

YANBU - I sleep every night on the sofa to accommodate DH snoring in our room. We used to alternate but that stopped. Tbh, a spare/box room for either of us to sleep in sounds heavenly! 😴

desperatemum1234 · 19/07/2026 09:36

If I were you, I’d take the box room myself. Make it nice and cosy. And still have the double bedroom as the official joint bedroom.

But really you should have bought a 4 double-bedroomed house if you and DH sleep separately. Why are you instigating this move when your DH doesn’t want to move?

FlyingCatGirl · 19/07/2026 10:28

Gloriia · 18/07/2026 14:32

Are you happily married? I could not ever seriously ask is it ok for my dh to sleep in the box room. No, it isn't. If he was happy with it fine but he isn't. I mean occasionally fine if one of you is ill but not as a permanent fixture.

My dh snores, I use sleep buds to mask it. How very bizarre to have a dh sleeping elsewhere every night.

Why are you even moving if he doesn't want to? I don't care who is paying the rent decisions like this should be agreed by both.

It's not bizarre, that's just you looking down your nose at people and trying to find fault in other people's relationships!

My partner and sleep in separate beds, we had to make the change because we were becoming sleep deprived because my partner not only snores, he tossed and turns in his sleep which adds to the snoring problem because he'll keep ending up on his back. Unfortunately due to fibromyalgia and possibly being peri menopausal also I don't sleep as deep as I should and dream vividly and can breathe noisily at times as a result and that disturbs my partner! Why would we not change that situation? Maybe you don't have to get up to go to work but we had to and we needed to be able to sleep.

We share a bed on holidays but again it can be exhausting because sleep is impacted.

justasking111 · 19/07/2026 10:37

@Bedroomdilemmas your life sounds busy enough without all the hassle of being a landlord with all the new rules coming in especially. We're selling our rental because of all the courses that the government send which I have to pay for and pass. Tenancy rights are doing a 180 degree turn because of housing shortages.

You could buy in the new area rather than paying rent.

Ilikesundays · 19/07/2026 10:44

Unless you want to break up your marriage, don’t put your dh in the box room. What are the sleeping arrangements in your current property? Have you tried earplugs? What work do you do that you can’t do elsewhere in the property? The two DCs will move out soon which will free up a double bedroom. Can you not sleep in the boxroom (and work in the double bedroom when no-one is sleeping there) in the meantime? And, as you say, it’s only for 2 years.

Halfbeaklily · 19/07/2026 11:44

villadicance · 18/07/2026 09:39

Your kids "really want" big rooms. So do you. Why is it him who has to compromise when he didn't even want to move?

You sound like you despise him.

I think the obvious compromise is that you share the biggest room and the box room just has a bed.

My DH snores too - it's a pain. But it's not fully in his control. He has been investigated for sleep apnoea (told he doesn't have it after a full sleep study), he isn't overweight, he has tried the standard things (wedge pillow, mouth guard all that). He still snores very loudly. It isn't something you can just overcome with some willpower

Mine was the same, went private, told he had over large tonsils, had them removed, mostly fixed now unless he sleeps on his back.
I'd suggest the main bedroom is shared except one of you sleeps in there, maybe take turns at first but eventully one of you will naturally end up sleeping there as a preference.

Megifer · 18/07/2026 09:43

Hes being a selfish arse. Its not a given your DC will move out any time soon and he just needs a bed. What a knob.

The same could be said about OP she only needs a bed so why can't she take the prison cell room 😆

Pinkissmart · 19/07/2026 13:41

How can people ‘sort out’ their snoring? There’s a lot of mean people on this thread!

Lots of gadgets to help like chin straps, jaw guards, nasal straps etc and obviously if your spouse is a snorer use earplugs or sleep buds. Far better than booting them out into the spare room!

Nothavingagoodvalentinesday · 19/07/2026 16:20

It shows absolute contempt for your DH even to suggest he takes the smallest room in the house. It is also a very poor message to send to the DC - your father is the least important person in this house. If that’s really how you feel I suggest you divorce him and let him lead a decent life with someone who values him.
if you love him you should take note of the old saying “Snoring is the sweetest sound this side of heaven. Ask any widow.”
