Bring back the death penalty in this case

AIBU to wish for the death penalty. How a mother can kill her baby with a hairdryer.
I read this to my husband who asked me to stop and was crying.
I'm Christian and am taught that all but one sin is forgivable.
BUT Our Lord also said that to harm one little one , you are better to have a millstone tied around your neck and be thrown into the sea.
While some interpretations claim it means misleading them, I think it's much more than this.
Today I feel bereft of love for the human race.
Of course this monster will claim Domestic violence, drugs , mental health etc.
I hope, as there is no death penalty, that she spends the rest of her life begging to die.
Sorry right now, all I can say is "Father forgive them. For they know not what they do".....because right now I Can't.

The problem with the concept of evil is that it is a concept. It does not exist. It's a construct to be something the opposite of the "good God". So for an atheist like me, there is no God and therefore no evil. Because the supernatural does not exist.

My feeling is that using terms such as "evil" or "demonic", are really letting society off the hook. To say someone is "evil" is implying they are controlled by a non existent anti God entity. But it might be something in society that caused a person to be that way.

I agree completely. When we label something as 'evil' we remove the humanity of it and therefor avoid taking any responsibility. Nothing happens in a vaccum. Nothing is 'evil'. Theres always a sequence of events. Theres always reasons and its our duty to actually deal with those in order to prevent further awful things from happening.

Yup. Personally it is another example of religion holding humanity back.

I posted above about Ruth Ellis being conditionally pardoned. She was an abused woman and, and today she would likely have been found of manslaughter. But back then, in living memory, she was dismissed as evil, and the real issue of abuse was swept under the rug.

On the same thing, it's not long since we were executing "witches" for being "evil".

what case? You didn’t link anything

In Aberdeen a 28 year old woman killed her baby with a hairdryer. Tried to link BBC article - can’t paste URL for some reason. Hideous.

thetinsoldier · 18/07/2026 05:48

Did you feel the same way about the men who raped and killed Preston Davey, or do you feel more strongly about this woman? If so, why?

QuintadosMalvados · 18/07/2026 06:13

I'm an atheist and I STRONGLY believe in the death penalty for certain crimes.
I'd have no qualms about this woman being killed.
It would also save money.

I'm a bit more open-minded about what adults do to other adults in the sense of if another adult kills another adult, I'll at least hear them out.
Who knows the person they killed could have been abusing them and they snapped.
This, though, no possible excuse.
Any crimes involving sadistic harm of children should be met with the death penalty.
And make them wait a few years so that other prisoners can make their life more difficult in the interim.

QuintadosMalvados · 18/07/2026 06:24

You don't have to be religious to believe some people are evil, either.
I am an atheist and I certainly believe some people are evil.

It simply means that they are sadistic pieces of shit.

Where does this evil come from ?

Where does this evil come from ?

I don't know and I don't care to be honest.
I am an atheist, there is no masterplan and in the case of certain crimes I don't particularly care why.

So you also have no interest in knowing why people do certain things ?

You just mark it down as "evil".

It doesn’t need to specify. It’s a thread about the death penalty. If people are likely to get triggered by abuse they can employ personal responsibility and not open the thread.

Why would a thread about the death penalty be about abuse?

Empathy with survivors of abuse isn't a bad thing, you know.

I’m not sure I said a thread about the death penalty would be about abuse. It’s not going to be about flowers and ponies though is it? There is a fair chance that it might be triggering to someone who has suffered abuse though, so easy to avoid.

The opening poster calls themselves a christian yet chooses to ignore both a commandment (that you shouldn't kill) and scriptures. Romans 12:19 ".... Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord".

As a life long atheist (but brought up in a country that is nominally Christian) the hypocrisy is breathtaking, but not unexpected.

You are cherry picking your scriptures.
Jesus says turn the other cheek...he is speaking to a crowd of ordinary people, about forgiveness.
Judges says an eye for an eye .....because its about punishment fitting the crime for law keepers. We are supposed to trust those in this position to carry out the punishment fitting the crime.
But then as atheist you would love to poke any holes in the vengeance of almighty God and the instructions he gave to his Judges. But brush off God's vengeance at your peril.

Shouldn’t you leave it up to God to judge?

Of course you don't care. Your life is rootless. You do not understand the anger of the God of all creation. His anger is fearful, and his love for us outrageous. But you shrug it off.

The issue is that when the deafh penalty exists, pedos and child abusers dont get caught. They get hidden by other family members ans protected because despite anything, they dont want that person to die. Unfortunately the death penalty wont solve why it happened.

I find judgemental Christians a very odd bunch of people.

Judge not, that ye be not judged. - just a thought.

YourOliveBalonz · 22/07/2026 18:47

How about lean not on your own understanding, eh ‘wise’ robin? Something in that one I think.

Churches are infamous for hiding them. Not reporting them. Moving them. Covering up for them.

Goodness me. This is your thread about the death sentence, and although you said in your first post that you are Christian, it turns out you appear to be of the OT sort and are keen on the vengeful God stuff.

Problem with that is, there is no God or Gods. They were invented by man. So if you are going to claim to know what "your" God thinks, you really should tackle the first hurdle of proving your God exists.
