Bring back the death penalty in this case

AIBU to wish for the death penalty. How a mother can kill her baby with a hairdryer.
I read this to my husband who asked me to stop and was crying.
I'm Christian and am taught that all but one sin is forgivable.
BUT Our Lord also said that to harm one little one , you are better to have a millstone tied around your neck and be thrown into the sea.
While some interpretations claim it means misleading them, I think it's much more than this.
Today I feel bereft of love for the human race.
Of course this monster will claim Domestic violence, drugs , mental health etc.
I hope, as there is no death penalty, that she spends the rest of her life begging to die.
Sorry right now, all I can say is "Father forgive them. For they know not what they do".....because right now I Can't.

From a stupid thread title via a specious, stupid argument to a vacuous conclusion … what a waste of time.

The thread title makes no mention of child abuse. And yes, some abuse survivors do need this information before they open a thread.

It doesn’t need to specify. It’s a thread about the death penalty. If people are likely to get triggered by abuse they can employ personal responsibility and not open the thread.

Tryagain26 · 17/07/2026 17:09

I don't believe in the death sentence in any circumstances.
And neither would a true Christian.

BabblingBiddy · 17/07/2026 17:13

As a Christian I very strongly oppose the death penalty.

It’s a no from me, however heinous the crime. It’s not because I’m some bleeding heart liberal either, some people don’t deserve to walk among us.

However, to bring it back means there is the potential for miscarriages of justice and pardoning a corpse is no good. It may be that only one 1 in a <insert large number> of convictions are wrong, but would you still be OK with the DP if you or your loved one were wrongly convicted and sentenced to die?

Ruth Ellis was given a conditional pardon just in the last week. The last woman executed in the UK.

So yes, I totally agree with you.

She denies it. A pathologist said the injuries were not consistent with the use of a hairdryer,

yet she was convicted,

we don’t know for certain what happened. So the death penalty isn’t really appropriate

Amazonjaunt · 17/07/2026 17:24

I am surprised that a desire to bring back the death penalty is being linked to hard right Christians. I thought Christians said Thou Shalt Not Kill?

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 17/07/2026 17:29

Back to Biblical interpretation again. The commandment 'Thou shalt not kill' uses a Hebrew word more closely associated with 'murder'.
The vast number of people God smites down in the Bible would suggest that 'legal killing' - or 'killing your enemies' is absolutely fine - but you really shouldn't go round unlawfully killing people.

Always knew my theology degree would come in useful one day 😆

Ovoemconserva · 17/07/2026 17:34

Can we do it with an hairdryer too?

Wenttoaweddingonamonday · 17/07/2026 17:34

Bots again 🙄

I am surprised that a desire to bring back the death penalty is being linked to hard right Christians. I thought Christians said Thou Shalt Not Kill?

Exodus 20:13 "You do not murder." (LSV)

Exodus 20:13 "Thou shalt not kill." (NKJV)

It depends on what version of the Bible one reads.

The word kill or murder, is from the Hebrew Strongs H7523.

Strong's Hebrew: 7523. רָצַח (ratsach) -- To murder, to slay, to kill (biblehub.com)

So yes, the so called inspired word of God that some people insist we live by, has words with multiple meanings. And nobody appears to have asked Moses to clarify it.

That is just one reason that I choose to ignore it. Another is that Christians appear to be undecided if the 10 commandments are included in "the new covenant". Most seem to say they are. But that really makes no logical sense. Because they kept that put scrap the "death for eating shellfish" stuff.

I am not in favour of the death penalty at all. I’m also not in favour of people who hide behind their religion(s) and use that as a reason to be in favour of it when one of the 10 commandments is thou shalt not kill. I’m not religious but I was brought up going to church every Sunday. Based on what I was taught as a child, murder is wrong for any reason. I take that to mean murder by the state (death penalty).

then how do we explain having a military ?

My issue is using religion as a reason to be in favour of the death penalty. Which is what I said in my post. I’m not in the military so I’m comfortable with my stance on this.

CandidHedgehog · 17/07/2026 17:55

So a woman who is convicted of killing her child should be executed. I take it you would have been 100% in favour of executing Sally Clark then - after all, she was convicted of killing two of her children.

Of course, the fact it was later proved she was convicted on dodgy evidence and additional forensics suggested natural causes might throw a teeny spanner in the works but I’m sure saying sorry to her family after she was already dead would sort that, right?

Equally, not protecting her in custody and letting the other prisoners finish her off - all good according to some posters?

AgnesMcDoo · 17/07/2026 17:56

sorry no

it’s awful and I understand how you feel but I don’t want the state to start murdering people

the death penalty is always wrong

ok my bad, fair points

Jk987 · 17/07/2026 18:00

We don’t need the Christian clap trap. Religion is responsible for a lot of evil crimes. You don’t have to be religious to be sickened by this murder.

Arlanymor · 17/07/2026 18:01

The state murders its citizens to prove that murder is wrong? No. Does not compute. I think most people who support capital punishment come purely from a place of vengeance and you really have to look at your moral make up in that case. I honestly thought we’d moved on and were more of an enlightened species these days. If we move more towards state-sanctioned violence then don’t be surprised if the rates of violent crime go up. There will always be criminals, there will always be crime, but the vast majority of us know better than to turn crime into a tit for tat scenario - what next? Back to hangings in public? Some crimes are horrifying - but responding in an equally horrific way will not bring back the person against whom the offence is committed nor will it prohibit future horrific offences.

Perplexed20 · 17/07/2026 18:14

I agree with the comedian Mark Thomas.

Have a referendum on it. If you vote yes and it goes through your name is put on a register. Every time there's a miscarriage of justice, everyone whose name is on the register, is put in a lottery. The winner is then picked up by the state and executed. Eye for an eye etc..

CurdinHenry · 17/07/2026 18:16

While it's a horrible story I've never understood why cases like this elicit such primitive rage in some people. Prison is appropriate.

because sometimes the sentence does not suit the crime

That's not really an answer. What's it to you that this woman killed her own child? She's gone to prison for it. The teeth gnashing is really primitive.

my answer was based on you saying Prison is appropriate., but to some people because of the length of the sentences compared with other crimes etc some people think the death penalty is better overall ?
