YANBU. This is just ridiculous.

Whatdidyoujustcallme · 16/07/2026 20:22

Yes. Let’s lose all equality, employment and right to a fair trial stuff! Who needs it - employers can hire and fire at will, you can fuck off with your maternity pay, in fact, forget your job, I don’t need a moody mummy asking for flexible working, or days off to look after her brats. Get rid of that silly PACE stuff, just lock em all up. If they say it wasn’t them, persuade a confession. No need for redundancy pay, or sick pay, or a minimum wage, or reasonable hours. No need for rights to a private life, who needs that?

You know when lots of silly people voted to leave the EU? And the same silly people are only just realising that they can no longer move their family to Benidorm and get a job and live there, or retire there because their income isn’t high enough?

That. You cannot cherry pick which bits of civilisation you like and ditch the bits you don’t. ECHR is international law, not just the EU you silly billy.

Wibble128 · 16/07/2026 20:25

Yes, it is not in any nations interests. It is about individuals which damages nations and national identities and values.

Bridgertonisbest · 16/07/2026 20:31

How is it ridiculous, Gaza is a war zone!

good, I’m glad we were able to offer a safe haven for people that are living in fear and having their rights eroded daily.

The ECHR is actually nothing to do with the EU at all. It’s a Council of Europe thing. The CoE long predates the EU.

SpottyAlpaca · 16/07/2026 20:34

No.

But the ECHR is a post-war organisation set up in a completely different era. It requires fundamental reform to make it fit for purpose in the mid 21st century. It was never designed to deal with the realities of mass illegal immigration, people smuggling and human trafficking on an industrial scale run by international organised crime groups.

If the necessary change doesn’t happen it will inevitably collapse as country after country elects right-wing populist governments with democratic mandates to do whatever it takes to control borders & enact mass deportations of illegal immigrants.

All the stuff we want can be kept with domestic legislation.

I agree. It's abused more times than the average man and woman needs to access it.

That’s a profoundly undermocraric argument.

The things you mention are enshrined in UK law, so leaving the ECHR wouldn’t affect them as it stands.

However, if the democratically elected House of Commons choose to amend the law in respect of any of these things, why shouldn’t they be able to?… unless, that is, you don’t actually believe in democracy.

thisandthats · 16/07/2026 20:38

Be very very careful. Without this framework we would lose

right to maternity pay
right to sick pay
right to notice and consultation if being made redundant

basically we’d be america. Women go back to work 8 weeks post partum and babies die in nurseries they are swaddled all day at an age they should still be with their mothers. Literally just google ‘infant death rates america’. Maybe you want that. I don’t.

Without ECHR they would be political bargaining chips. Tories and reform both openly intend to unwind them. We’re going to turn into america where you can be sacked with no notice and 2 weeks maternity leave is the norm.

no thank you.

They can be enshrined in domestic legislation.

And we can also deport illegals and control our borders

If the people didn't want that they wouldn't elect a government that would do that . especially if doing so would ruin their election chances and is not the will of the people

Parker231 · 16/07/2026 20:43

How would you get around leaving the ECHR would breach the Good Friday Agreement?

Too many people would happily vote to tear up their own rights is it was presented to them as a way of making foreigners go away.

Why can't the UK have its own equivalent law(s)?

ForFluentLimeFatball · 16/07/2026 20:49

As we are not in Europe any more, we should be able to do like Australia does and refuse most people. This is a small island that is full up.

That argument doesn’t hold with our electoral first past the post system. More people don’t vote for the sitting government than do.

Ah now. I see your mistake, you are making the assumption that people have an understanding of what they want to get rid of, or to have happen. Look at all the numb nuts who complained that they didn't get their own perfect Brexit.

Look at the farmers, who voted for it, without the slightest inkling that it would make it vastly more difficult to export to the UK. Tim Martin, who demanded special treatment to have East European workers in his pubs. Fishermen, whose shellfish rots at customs in France.

None if them got what they thought they'd voted for.

Can the UK not legislate?

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 16/07/2026 20:54

Killing myself laughing at the barefaced nonsense suggestion that politicians with a vested interest in extricating the UK from ECHR would just immediately set about replicating everything in UK Law anyway.

Anyone who believes this utter shite must have a zip up the back of their heads.
