People were falling over themselves ( some still are) to help Ukrainians because of the war. There is no such thing for Gazans afaik. What’s wrong with them being able to come here under humanitarian rules when their home is a war zone, whose roots can be traced clearly to Britain and the ongoing war included British weapons?

This is suicidal empathy.

We helped the Ukrainians because they are fellow Europeans who are physically relatively proximate and culturally fairly similar to us. That is our duty and we didn't even take in a huge number compared to more immediate neighbours. It is the duty of Middle Eastern countries to take in Gazans, who are physically proximate and culturally similar to them. There have to be limits to these things. The idea that we can just take in anyone who is suffering anywhere in the world is loony tunes, frankly.

We should absolutely be able to leave the ECHR if it is preventing us from setting our own immigration policy. I would prefer it to be reformed but I also think that may not be possible in any reasonable time frame. Asylum should be for people who are at imminent risk of state persecution (imprisonment, torture or death). If you spread the net any wider the problem becomes much too big to solve by taking in individuals.

Ukrainians are more culturally compatible. And it's only women and kids coming. Men are still fighting.

Bullshit.

There are over 50,000 male Ukrainian refugees aged 18-64 in the U.K.

Which parts of Ukrainian culture are “compatible” with that of the U.K.? Just say it’s because they are white and be done with it.

OK, so at least you’re being crysral clear that you don’t believe in democracy, and that British people are fundamentally too evil and stupid to be entrusted with the right to choose a Government that can set the law of the land.

Am I wrong?

People should have the right to want stupid things. It's not democracy otherwise. Democracy is the least-worst system we have and the people saying we should cede our power to the ECHR because we don't deserve to wield it ourselves are people we should be very wary of.

UserDownTheRoad · 16/07/2026 21:50

Need to get out of ECHR as it seems to give all humans on earth, equal rights to the taxes and infrastructure of our small island.

How are you defining British people?

Daafdjdnd · 16/07/2026 20:59

Or make it so the echr can't tell us what to do with immigration law and our parliament is sovereign

The ECHR is pieces of paper with writing and signatures on them.

Pieces of paper aren't animate. They don't speak.

Every aspect of employment rights, family law, human rights, civil rights etc etc in the UK is governed by UK legislation which incorporates the UK's obligations as a signatory of the ECHR. That's the Sovereign Parliament, enacting legislation voted on by UK MPs, who in turn are acting on behalf of voters.

But you go ahead and rant about the European Court if it makes you happy.

It's because they're European. It's not racist to think that Europeans are more similar to us than Gazans. Have you ever been to the middle east? Do you think all cultures are exactly the same?

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 16/07/2026 21:52

Yup why the actual fuck are we paying for them?!

But would we? Especially if Reform are the next government.

Does Reform have a policy re ECHR?

OverOrUnderprotective · 16/07/2026 21:55

For the sake of 18 people once in a while I don't want to give up my rights and be at the mercy of the British state. Ironically, If we did we might be in a situation ourselves one day where we had to apply for asylum in other countries.

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 16/07/2026 21:55

There's a reason why the nearby Arab countries don't take Gazans

supercrone · 16/07/2026 21:56

You are unreasonable for many reasons. Not least because of your source, the Jewish Chronicle, which has been heavily critiqued for pro Zionist bias. pressgazette.co.uk/news/four-columnists-quit-jewish-chronicle-over-secrecy-standards-and-bias/

Daafdjdnd · 16/07/2026 21:57

People saying "GFA GFA", the top lawyers of the Tory party have ideas. Reform say they will renegotiate. Idk what will happen.

A friend of mine says we can be nominally party to it but pass legislation to ignore the rulings.

Ideally we should never let them determine our immigration law and policy. We should always have the final say.

The only people who have the universal right to enter and live in the UK are UK citizens. Others are subject to our pleasure.

Yes. Let’s lose all equality, employment and right to a fair trial stuff! Who needs it - employers can hire and fire at will, you can fuck off with your maternity pay, in fact, forget your job, I don’t need a moody mummy asking for flexible working, or days off to look after her brats. Get rid of that silly PACE stuff, just lock em all up. If they say it wasn’t them, persuade a confession. No need for redundancy pay, or sick pay, or a minimum wage, or reasonable hours. No need for rights to a private life, who needs that?

You know when lots of silly people voted to leave the EU? And the same silly people are only just realising that they can no longer move their family to Benidorm and get a job and live there, or retire there because their income isn’t high enough?

That. You cannot cherry pick which bits of civilisation you like and ditch the bits you don’t. ECHR is international law, not just the EU you silly billy.

International? What does the E stand for?

SuffolkSun · 16/07/2026 21:58

EasternStandard · 16/07/2026 21:24

Similar countries do well without this. They top the human rights tables and citizens are happy with the set up.

Which similar countries?

And of those similar countries, which ones also have an internationally-binding Good Friday Agreement predicated on being a signatory to the ECHR?

50k males yes. But the vast vast majority are women and children.

MNLurker1345 · 16/07/2026 22:00

Britain was one of the original founders of the ECHR, and its conception was/is a reflection of British constitutional values.

Originally the British legal system had huge influence.

No matter what anyone says, if we leave we will not slip into barbarism and we will be able to legislate on human rights as we have done since the time of the Magna Carta and the recognition of British common law.

The debate is not whether Britain can exercise human rights, of course it can, it’s whether the conventions current interpretation reflects its original intentions.

Daafdjdnd · 16/07/2026 22:00

Again we can probably pass legislation just ignoring the ECHR or saying the ECHR is invalid when it contradicts domestic law.

We definitely need full control over our immigration policy. We decide who comes and goes

Egypt has taken about 100000 Gazan refugees.

Honestly I hate being rude but you are such an ignorant moron. Please stop posting nonsense.

Your mate probably says a lot of things. I doubt many of them are true. And on the GFA s/he is most certainly wrong.

Reform also says a lot of things, usually lies. If you believe that the UK can just "renegotiate" the GFA because Reform says so...

The Good Friday Agreement, GFA, is a peaceful treaty passed by international law that includes British born citizens.

As we are not in Europe any more, we should be able to do like Australia does and refuse most people. This is a small island that is full up.

And completely skint.

AllaFieraDellEst · 16/07/2026 22:04

Well for starters, Ukrainians don't make ghoulish, antisemitic TV programs that indoctrinate their children into thinking that killing Jews and martyrdom is amazing...
