Killing myself laughing at the barefaced nonsense suggestion that politicians with a vested interest in extricating the UK from ECHR would just immediately set about replicating everything in UK Law anyway.

Anyone who believes this utter shite must have a zip up the back of their heads.

I fully agree. The only reason to leave the ECHR would be to remove people’s human rights. I think it’s a damning indictment of our education system that there are so many morons who go for this stuff in the UK, I really do.

. Serious criminals should have their human rights forfeited when they take another person's life

No. Humans don't stop being human just because they've done terrible things.

We could ask the same of you if you would still be in favour if one of your family members was a victim

Absolutely. Humans don't cease being human and having humanity just because something awful happens to them or someone they care about.

I'll insert the word "arguably" in your assertions. Heather Herbert has recently shown that some humans are beyond contempt and do, indeed, cease to be human.

They can be enshrined in domestic legislation.

And we can also deport illegals and control our borders

Would that be taking back control as we were told Brexit would do for us. How has that worked out?

But the average person won't understand the international agreements that are based around the ECHR some of which could lead to war. Nevermind the trade agreements we'd potentially stop being eligible for. Most people don't understand what illegal immigration actually is or the legal framework around asylum. They also won't hear about the vast majority of cases that have nothing to do with immigrants. The UK courts cannot instruct parliament whilst our treaties come with consequences that keep our politicians from going too far. What people want isn't always what's actually the best thing. It's why we're supposed to elect clever, decent people to make decisions for us because the average person has no understanding of what they are potentially removing from themselves. No decent politicians should stand on a platform that attempts to damage the wellbeing of the population by stealth. I'd argue it's treasonous to deliberately damage your country for individual fiscal gain. The average person also doesn't understand parliamentary sovereignity, the dualist nature of our country or how our legal system works. No ally will trust a country that rips up it's international treaties because they have been misrepresented to the population. Does the average person even know how many times the UK has been ruled against since 1975?

This makes no sense.

It didn't take long for the usual insults to come out.

What species is Heather Herbert then?

As we are not in Europe any more, we should be able to do like Australia does and refuse most people. This is a small island that is full up.

We never left Europe. Europe is a continent.

No, we absolutely shouldn’t leave the ECHR.

It’s vital that citizens should always have an international court to resort to if our own country gets it wrong.

Sub-human sums it up.

Happyjoe · 16/07/2026 21:16

If you think leaving the ECHR is the right way to tackle this then quite frankly mad.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 16/07/2026 21:16

That's not a species. Try again.

Right, so it's just total drivel and best ignored like most of the guff you pollute this board with.

Pollute the board 😆 🤣 would that be your type of species who does that.

Except it's a not about you. There's no such thing as a sub human species. Unless you want to do vocal monkey noises and gestures to confirm that you are racist.

SaySomethingMan · 16/07/2026 21:20

People were falling over themselves ( some still are) to help Ukrainians because of the war. There is no such thing for Gazans afaik. What’s wrong with them being able to come here under humanitarian rules when their home is a war zone, whose roots can be traced clearly to Britain and the ongoing war included British weapons?

Daafdjdnd · 16/07/2026 21:20

SuffolkSun · 16/07/2026 21:08

The ECHR has nothing to do with the EU.

Asylum is governed by international law. Are you proposing we leave the planet?

Lol. You only enforce international law if you ratify the treaty and implement it into domestic law. You can't force a country to obey it.

India (where I'm from ancestrally) isn't a party to the refuge convention. I read about it. They just detain, deport regardless of how much the applicant whines about it.

Not racist, but I draw the line at calling anybody like Herbert, human. I'm not sure why you've brought race into it.

Not really. Serious criminals should have their human rights forfeited when they take another person's life. We could ask the same of you if you would still be in favour if one of your family members was a victim.

No, people who have committed crimes are still human.
What did this family do to you exactly?

Were you all in uproar when Ukrainians were coming over, housed, benefits etc etc... or is it just white people that get human rights?

SuffolkSun · 16/07/2026 21:23

Daafdjdnd · 16/07/2026 20:51

Implement it via domestic legislation

Perhaps the question wasn't clear enough for you:

The Good Friday Agreement is a binding, international treaty. Under the GFA, UK governments are legally obliged to ensure the ECHR applies to N. Ireland and that the rights of N. Irish citizens under the ECHR are not infringed. Leaving the ECHR would breach the GFA. Enacting UK legislation to "replace" the ECHR would breach the GFA.

So, how would you get around breaching the GFA by leaving the ECHR?

The Ukranians didn't start a war or have ties that could prove a danger to the UK.

Similar countries do well without this. They top the human rights tables and citizens are happy with the set up.
