AIBU to find my friend's Instagram posts about her stay rather odd?

allthingsinmoderation · 15/07/2026 07:47

AIBU to think this very odd behaviour or am i just behind the times: My friend of 30 yrs ,we met at primary school ,she lives 100 miles from me came to visit with her husband and 4 children for a week. We live in a touristy place. We spent a lovely week taking them to local places with our family, pretty villages, restaurants, museums, beaches etc, My friend is very active on social media particularly Instagram. I have instagram but am not very active.
After my friends stay she posted pictures of her stay, each place we had visited including my house and garden as if it were a magazine photo shoot,it was as if they lived in my house or it was a holiday home and we didn't exist. She captioned the photos holiday/holiday home/family holiday. In fact she had erased us from some photos. Is this strange or am i behind the times?

I would reply saying "so lovely to host you and spend so much time together, wow you've made our house look amazing like something out of a magazine 😁"

She's being cheeky, making out she stayed at a fancy Airbnb!

Yes! I did this when an acquaintance posted photos of her child in my garden many years later after an event I hosted. She ignored my comment that I remembered hosting her child in my home that day!

She probably wanted to protect your privacy.

Agreed.

Let it go.

LivingTheDreamish · 16/07/2026 21:21

She's just really caught up in curating/elevating her lifestyle on Instagram and picked out the images that suit her fantasy of herself. She's lost sight of how rude it is when she was in fact graciously hosted by you in your home.

I would like her slightly less but try to let it go (unless she's rude in person of course).

PrestonHood121 · 16/07/2026 22:29

She's planning on implying to people that your house is her holiday home. Expect more visits down the line from her to keep up the facade.

whoknows789 · 16/07/2026 22:36

People dont tend to post photos of other people these days without permission. I wouldn’t think into it too much

Dalston · 16/07/2026 22:40

heyjudedontmakeitsad · 15/07/2026 19:08

How?

She’s made it clear it was a holiday.

Because she has posted pictures of OP’s home and garden without mentioning that she is staying with friends. I think that’s rude. It can’t be about privacy because she hasn’t asked if OP minds her home being on social media.

suburberphobe · 16/07/2026 22:42

OP will find out she's not the father of her child.

Mumsnet gets weirder by the day.....

No "she" will find out she's not "the father" of her child..... 🙄

TooHotToBoogie · 16/07/2026 23:03

You know most Instagram posts are nothing like the actual thing they are promoting

NeatPinkFinch · 16/07/2026 23:13

She used you.

TheDevilWears · 16/07/2026 23:48

I too live in a holiday destination OP and I made a decision after my last friend came to stay that I’m not hosting anymore … like you I was a tourist guide for the week, cooked, prepared the guest room, undertook the airport runs (1.5 hours each way - so six hours driving) we needed to leave for the airport at 5am for the return flight and I just know that if I didn’t live where I live there wouldn’t be nearly as many visitors. I don’t want to host anyone else’s holiday. I live on an island with great beaches - it’s beautiful but quite expensive. If they had to make their own way to where I live, book a B&B or a hotel, hire a car etc … I wouldn’t be seeing them. I used to live in NYC…I couldn’t count how many people were missing me and really wanted to come and see me 😂

siesiez · 17/07/2026 00:10

I would have taken this as a massive compliment.

DressOrSkirt · 17/07/2026 00:41

I don't post photos of other people unless they have very active accounts themselves, and I would never post photos of children. I would give her the benefit of the doubt that she assumed you would want to keep your privacy.

Wooky073 · 17/07/2026 00:51

it s how things are really. But also consider if there are any security risks with your home being shared online

dirtytiles · 17/07/2026 06:23

Isn’t she just trying to show off? pretend she’s rented a lovely house etc

Owly11 · 17/07/2026 06:59

It's rude in the extreme to post photos of your home on line without first asking you if you would mind, but the fact that you have to ask shows how degraded our culture has become. Common courtesy and politeness are dead. I personally would not be entertaining this friend again.

I miss you tons too !!! 😏

A week is not a casual undertaking if you’re preparing all the meals and driving everywhere. If we’ve ever been guests anywhere I try and make ourselves as low maintenance as possible. Happy to go off and explore on our own, cook a meal or two and obviously bring plenty of supplies.

Of course.

And of course this was nothing to do with privacy or she wouldn’t be posting pics of OP’s house on Instagram! I would not be happy about that.

I’ve seen enough social media bunnies to know what she’s up to - promoting her rosy lifestyle. She cut OP out to imply that it’s solely a family trip either to a family property, a paid for holiday, or a free influencer stay.

You don’t really like her
she invited herself
you don’t even seem to have enjoyed the stay

i do like her.
Yes she did invite herself but i agreed because i do like her.
I did enjoy the stay.
I was just confused about the posting of 20 photograghs labelled holiday/holiday home of my home ,garden and places we visited together that showed no evidence of me or my family. Ijust wanted to know wether this was common practice and im behnind the times or i am correct to think this a bit odd.

Thanks for the replies ,its seems at lot of people think it a bit odd too.
A few think i just dont like her and its normal to do what she did.
Its great to get others perspectives.
I have decided not to say anything about it or comment on her instagram as i really dont want to embarrass her and contrary to what some poster have said,i do like her . If it happens again ,i think i will have a conversation with her to try to get to her reasons.

It’s very odd OP, and I would ask her to take them down, personally. No way is my house going on Instagram, particularly without my consent.

VanquishedColston · 17/07/2026 09:07

I don't think it's that weird tbh, I think family & friends pics are usually posted on fb when people still use it, whereas Instagram is more of a curated lifestyle platform these days.

Why would you wait until it happens again?! If she is a good friend, good enough to stay in your home - why not ask her now? Why does asking her have to be a cause of embarrassment? I'm not sure what you think she will be embarrassed about.

Also why do you need to know her reasons? Do you want your home featured on Instagram or don't you?

Exactly, I mean it’s definitely weird but some people are weird!

Kerry242 · 17/07/2026 11:40

I don't think it's odd so much as it's born out of insecurity and trying to keep up with the Joneses. She wants to give the impression that she has rented an airbnb because she is successful in life or she owns a holiday home.

It's eye-rolly but unlikely to be anything deeper than that i.e a reflection on your friendship.

PinkMagpie · 17/07/2026 12:25

People are weird on social media. The posts that really strike me as odd are when people photograph their dying elderly relatives in hospital beds and put them on their social media with a caption about what a fighter they are etc. The invasion of their relative’s privacy in this way always shocks me
