AIBU to find my friend's Instagram posts about her stay rather odd?

AIBU to think this very odd behaviour or am i just behind the times: My friend of 30 yrs ,we met at primary school ,she lives 100 miles from me came to visit with her husband and 4 children for a week. We live in a touristy place. We spent a lovely week taking them to local places with our family, pretty villages, restaurants, museums, beaches etc, My friend is very active on social media particularly Instagram. I have instagram but am not very active.
After my friends stay she posted pictures of her stay, each place we had visited including my house and garden as if it were a magazine photo shoot,it was as if they lived in my house or it was a holiday home and we didn't exist. She captioned the photos holiday/holiday home/family holiday. In fact she had erased us from some photos. Is this strange or am i behind the times?

Let me consider the security issues of essentially having multiple photos of the interior (and garden/exterior) of your home along with an easily found full address for you 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔.

Yes there are security issues. You seem to be quite happy with that though. Can you link to the Instagram post so we can check out your taste in interior shizzle?

Well right move still has archived photos and the address is easy to find from a quick google search regardless of my friend posting pics of my house so i guess security is already compromised.
No,i wont be linking the instagram .

I'm not going to comment on her IG as i've decided to let it go this time and i really don't want to embarrass her as she is actually a nice person despite this strange photogate issue
But if i were to comment id use your suggestion !

I still don’t understand why raising it with your friend is embarrassing!!!! Embarrassing to whom - her or you?

We’ve established on this thread that it is CF territory, a potential security risk, high-handed, inconsiderate and not really what friends do, although not the most unusual thing ever in the modern social media universe. And yet you are somehow worried that mentioning it at all is embarrassing, despite happily chatting about it here on MN. Please explain how!

I think she will feel challenged, criticised ,called out and will feel defensive. Its just my opinion.Im asking peoples opinions to try to gain an understanding.I'm happy to do that.

@allthingsinmoderationyou keep saying you don’t want to embarrass your friend by asking her why she posted your home on Instagram. Why do you think that it is an embarrassing subject or would be a source of embarrassment?

I think she'd feel challenged, called out and feel defensive. It just my opinion/feeling on it.

She probably wanted to protect your privacy.

'After my friends stay she posted pictures of her stay, each place we had visited including MY HOUSE AND GARDEN as if it were a magazine photo shoot'...🙄
Personally I don't think 'protecting your privacy' was high on her agenda?! 😡

Well I wasn’t entirely serious about wanting you to link to the post, but just pointing out that you are concerned about your privacy.

Just out of interest, how would she respond if you did that to her?

Cariadm · 17/07/2026 16:45

I have to say that I find it strange that after initially wondering just what your 'friends' agenda was, the 'security' issue did not occur to you? It does of course make a difference what a users 'settings' are, if they are just for 'family and friends' or are 'public' but in reality either way it's still one of the major problems we are always warned to consider when posting on social media!! 🙄
If this were to happen to me I would simply have to mention it to the person who had taken the liberty of displaying my home online without consulting you first, and also the way that she presented the whole 'holiday package' to obviously project and enhance her 'image' would leave a lot to be desired for me also!! 😟

I think she'd feel challenged, called out and feel defensive. It just my opinion/feeling on it.

if you don’t want your home on SM like it is a holiday home, then just ask her to take the photos down of your home. That’s not embarrassing, it’s just a polite request. If she wants to be defensive or an arse about it, then that’s on her. It would also show she’s not truly a friend if she starts behaving badly about it. Maybe that’s what is concerning you?

I did assume you weren't entirely serious.
I really don't know how she would respond if i did that tbh.
The reason i posted in the first place is because i felt uneasy and confused about her behaviour, most people responding seem to think it strange, some think it potentially dangerous ,a few say its common practice and no big deal.

I'd go with she has used your home and surroundings to 'big up' herself. She may be insecure and needs the 'likes'.
I'd give it a few weeks and see if she contacts you.

KiwiFall · 17/07/2026 21:02

I think she’s trying to pass your house as her “holiday home” to look more affluent.

Shelleyblueeyes · 17/07/2026 22:06

allthingsinmoderation · 17/07/2026 14:14

I have decided to "let it go" and will not be mentioning it to her .
But honestly i really dont think this is about about privacy as she has posted pictures of me and my family before eg: at her birthday .

Very odd.

You say she “invited herself”
You think she will “feel challenged, criticised, called out and defensive” even if you have a a little chat with her about IG pics
You seem to think she is an image obsessed social media obsessive.

And this is how you regard a presumably very close friend who came to stay with her partner and 4 children? @allthingsinmoderation ?

She said she wanted to visit for a week with her family and mentioned specific dates that they wanted to come.I did agree as i do like her and we have been friends for along time and get on well.
I didnt say i thought she is "an image obsessed social media obsessive" i just described her social media activity during and after the visit and asked peoples opinion as to wether it was strange/odd or wether i was behind the times.
It seems most people think it strange ,some think there may have been reasons,a few think it's me being behind the times and it's common practice.

She invited herself tbh

You say that if even if you have a calm chat with her she will react badly

you are absolutely adamant that not a chance would she not be making clear this was your house for privacy reasons

so you do like her?

Butnotreally1 · 20/07/2026 08:35

She does aspire to the finer things in life and her instagram is curated with a rosy spin generally, perhaps does just want show her and her family in an aspirational way?

and she will get defensive
and she invited herself and her 4 children over
and you are 100% sure it can’t possibly be because she didn’t want to identify the house as yours for privacy reasons

Not unreasonable to ask… do you even like her?

Baking07 · 20/07/2026 09:04

OP sounds intimidated by her to say the least.
She sounds far too in awe and nervous of her response to question what most people would think is a violation of her and her familys privacy.

Her friend sounds like a vacuous SM obsessed fool, that decided using her friend and her home was reasonable behaviour.

I cannot imagine any person having confusion over such behaviour.
It quite clearly is a violation of privacy by someone who is a user.

We teach people how to treat us and this woman feels very comfortable inviting herself to, and using OP's home.

OP is more comfortable accepting it than to challenge it, which is her choice.

This is why this woman feels so comfortable inviting herself and her family into her home to use her and it for the week.

Thanks for the replies ,its seems at lot of people think it a bit odd too.
A few think i just dont like her and its normal to do what she did.
Its great to get others perspectives.
I have decided not to say anything about it or comment on her instagram as i really dont want to embarrass her and contrary to what some poster have said,i do like her . If it happens again ,i think i will have a conversation with her to try to get to her reasons.

It’s definitely odd, but also very rude to post pictures of your home if she thinks you don’t like social media. It makes no sense at all.

Hit the nail on the head I’d say. OP is wondering if she’s being treated like a doormat and not a friend.

MumsTheWordYouKnow · 20/07/2026 21:23

One last thing, this CF invited herself??!! Woah, I’d be telling her to take her photos down, her home is not a holiday home!!

thetinsoldier · 20/07/2026 22:03

Nah, it’s not about privacy. She wanted to pretend that it was her home/her holiday rental, and she didn’t want to acknowledge that it was your home.

Really odd behaviour! I’d talk to her about it. Ask what she was thinking.

I do like her ,i just found this one thing strange and wanted others opinions on this online behaviour. I really don't think it a privacy thing, a quick google of our house name (which she used as caption) would identify us.
She did invite her self and her family, but i agreed because i do like them and enjoyed their visit.
