AIBU to find my friend's Instagram posts about her stay rather odd?

AIBU to think this very odd behaviour or am i just behind the times: My friend of 30 yrs ,we met at primary school ,she lives 100 miles from me came to visit with her husband and 4 children for a week. We live in a touristy place. We spent a lovely week taking them to local places with our family, pretty villages, restaurants, museums, beaches etc, My friend is very active on social media particularly Instagram. I have instagram but am not very active.
After my friends stay she posted pictures of her stay, each place we had visited including my house and garden as if it were a magazine photo shoot,it was as if they lived in my house or it was a holiday home and we didn't exist. She captioned the photos holiday/holiday home/family holiday. In fact she had erased us from some photos. Is this strange or am i behind the times?

Wow!
Performative and bragging much!
Obviously staying in a friend’s house doesn’t have the same kudos as renting a fabulous holiday home! Sad really.

Sartre · 15/07/2026 08:18

My guess is she wants everyone to think they’ve paid for an air BnB.

Kimmers4334 · 15/07/2026 08:18

I think it sounds fine unless she has included photos of her own family and cropped you out of everything. I would expect to be in a couple of photos if there are ones of people, but she is probably putting the photos up to share with her own family. I assume she thanked you for hosting her in person or a message, so putting that on Instagram would be a bit redundant. I’m assuming she didn’t caption it as though she owns the house, and I’d be flattered she thought my home was Insta-worthy

I would reply saying "so lovely to host you and spend so much time together, wow you've made our house look amazing like something out of a magazine 😁"

She's being cheeky, making out she stayed at a fancy Airbnb!

Definitely this. I bet she deletes your comment!

Shes rude, imo

TheSandgroper · 15/07/2026 08:20

Yeah, I wouldn’t be letting her get away with it. I would be commenting or putting my own photos up tagging her (including the originals where she has erased you) saying “so glad you enjoyed our hospitality. All squashing together in my house is certainly making memories to last a lifetime”.

Or something. But I am very happy to be petty sometimes.

Bimblebombles · 15/07/2026 08:22

Someone I know owns a share in a holiday home, which I know was largely renovated (for free) by one of the other owners who is a builder, and as a group a lot of work has gone into making the place inhabitable / doing the admin for renting it out and so forth. But whenever this particular person stays there the vibe from her Facebook posts is that it’s very much “my little family going to OUR holiday home / how lucky and successful I am to own my own holiday home”.

It makes me laugh and the builder part-owner always comments underneath something like “yeah it’s a great place, I’m really pleased with how the kitchen I fitted last weekend turned out” 😂

I’d also largely assume privacy, especially if you have kids and aren’t very active on social media. I don’t post pictures of my kids on social media and wouldn’t be happy a friend did.

Presumably you don’t post photos of other people’s homes either?
The idea of displaying someone’s home online being ok because you’ve edited them out of the photos for “privacy” is bizarre to me.

Poppingby · 15/07/2026 08:27

Everything is strange about social media culture. Aesthetics and how things appear is the only thing that matters. I'm surprised there wasn't a post about her lovely big group of friends all in (their) beautiful house together laughing though. But yes you/we are behind the times.

Woofwoofwoff · 15/07/2026 07:52

Thing is people will complain that they where put on instagram without consent as well , so I understand why she’s removed you .

it is a bit odd she’s put your house on there .

but tbh I would take it as a compliment. Pictures of my home would definitely not be instagram worthy 🤣

Exactly this.

I think is actually trying to be considerate because she knows you don’t post much on social media.

RaininSummer · 15/07/2026 08:29

I think she was just trying to show off about her 'holiday' home. No reason she couldn't have captioned it 'lovely stay with friends'

JMSA · 15/07/2026 08:32

You said she had erased you from some photos, so by that I assume not all?

GellerYeller · 15/07/2026 08:35

She absolutely wanted to position this as a naice rental, rather than being hosted at your expense.
Which is ridiculous as anyone who knows her well will be aware she has a friend in your area and make the connection. Making her look a bit daft really.
I can understand you’d find this hurtful OP.

PuppyMonkey · 15/07/2026 08:36

Did you want her to tag you or hash tag you or something? TBH, I’d prefer it the way your friend has done it and leave me out of it.

PetulaGordeno · 15/07/2026 08:37

I have worked in that arena and she’s bang out of order taking images of a private home and posting them without asking the owner’s permission. It’s CF behaviour and really, really rude.
Instagram is full of holiday stuff right now so she’s sold the whole trip as inspirational, without mentioning she wasn’t paying £’s to stay in a luxury holiday home. She left out the part where she was an invited guest in your home.
She has basically used your home and where you live to place an inspirational post. Which as usual is a lot of smoke and mirrors.
However, it also means that where you live is beautiful as is the location.
You could say nothing and leave it.
Personally I would repost them without her permission and add ‘it was so lovely to have Laura and her family stay with us. Such lovely pics. Sadly FYI we don’t rent our home and it’s a fabulous reminder that we actually live somewhere so beautiful!’

Odd for Facebook. Not odd for some of the wannabes on Insta.

My DILs best friend wanted a baby shower. Best friend chose the venue, decided who should be invited and chose the things that my DIL should buy to decorate the place ( DIL was given money for this). The Instagram post she put up was ' you guys !!!! Thought I was going out for a coffee with x and then all these lovely people turned up. What a surprise '. I'm old so it just seems deeply weird to me, especially when you've tagged all the people who were invited by you to ' totally surprise 'you .

Didimum · 15/07/2026 08:42

I agree she likely wanted to protect your privacy rather than spam the internet with images of your family at home.

Noshowlomo · 15/07/2026 08:43

Noshadelamp · 15/07/2026 08:01

I would reply saying "so lovely to host you and spend so much time together, wow you've made our house look amazing like something out of a magazine 😁"

She's being cheeky, making out she stayed at a fancy Airbnb!

Yeah I would do this

Larrythecatforpm · 15/07/2026 08:44

i would reply “was lovely to host you & your family in our home.”

Baking07 · 15/07/2026 08:44

Posting pictures of your private home is extremely off.
How rude and intrusive.

Poppingby · 15/07/2026 08:45

Ooh she's not suddenly become a travel agent with one of those MLMs has she? Some people I know who are doing this are posting every trip down the shops as an exclusive ABTA protected getaway at the mo.

MoistVonL · 15/07/2026 08:46

I would assume she was respecting that you don't post much on Instagram and would prefer not to be plastered all over someone else's content.

If it feels you are being edited out, though, leave a comment.

"Lovely to have you stay - great job making out home look like a magazine shoot! I wish it looked like that all the time."

This is exactly what I was going to suggest 😆

Perhaps they weren't photogenic enough.Made me think of Nigella filming her cooking series ages ago where 'friends' turned up and sat in her pretend garden to eat whatever gorgeousness she'd cooked in her pretend kitchen in her pretend home ( in a warehouse in Sarf Landon). They were paid extras. Perhaps , in Ops friend's ideal world is only filled with beautiful people. Real people not allowed

NinjaCoffee · 15/07/2026 08:47

I actually think you are looking too much into this. If you aren’t very active on Instagram she was likely just protecting your privacy. I would never put friends on my Instagram who weren't on it/active.

Rosesandcamelias · 15/07/2026 08:48

She wouldn't be posting pictures of your home if she cared about your privacy.
