AIBU to find my friend's Instagram posts about her stay rather odd?

allthingsinmoderation · 15/07/2026 07:47

AIBU to think this very odd behaviour or am i just behind the times: My friend of 30 yrs ,we met at primary school ,she lives 100 miles from me came to visit with her husband and 4 children for a week. We live in a touristy place. We spent a lovely week taking them to local places with our family, pretty villages, restaurants, museums, beaches etc, My friend is very active on social media particularly Instagram. I have instagram but am not very active.
After my friends stay she posted pictures of her stay, each place we had visited including my house and garden as if it were a magazine photo shoot,it was as if they lived in my house or it was a holiday home and we didn't exist. She captioned the photos holiday/holiday home/family holiday. In fact she had erased us from some photos. Is this strange or am i behind the times?

@allthingsinmoderation another thing to consider is that people take photos from sites and put them elsewhere eg from instagram to Pinterest. Or magazines can use them in articles like ‘10 ways to refresh your coastal home’. You lose all control. I’ve gone from thinking ‘weird’ to ‘I’d want all my photos taken off instagram right now’.

I have the same concerns.

A neighbours children once had their photo taken for inclusion in an online something or other with my house as a backdrop. When I asked the mother, a friend, why they hadn't used their own house she said that she didn't want to for security purposes!

Saltysweetspicy · 17/07/2026 13:12

@allthingsinmoderation Honestly? Sounds like she used you for some new Insta posts

I too live in a holiday destination OP and I made a decision after my last friend came to stay that I’m not hosting anymore … like you I was a tourist guide for the week, cooked, prepared the guest room, undertook the airport runs (1.5 hours each way - so six hours driving) we needed to leave for the airport at 5am for the return flight and I just know that if I didn’t live where I live there wouldn’t be nearly as many visitors. I don’t want to host anyone else’s holiday. I live on an island with great beaches - it’s beautiful but quite expensive. If they had to make their own way to where I live, book a B&B or a hotel, hire a car etc … I wouldn’t be seeing them. I used to live in NYC…I couldn’t count how many people were missing me and really wanted to come and see me 😂

Sadly i think you may be right (and i think i wanted to avoid thinking that could be the case for me) Its a shame .............

Is her profile public? If so, I urge you to tell her to delete them. I don’t think she has your best interests at heart.

Don't get confused by thinking she’s your friend, she’s put photos of your private spaces out there in public for anyone to look at.

Shelleyblueeyes · 16/07/2026 21:08

Agreed.

Let it go.

X

I have decided to "let it go" and will not be mentioning it to her .
But honestly i really dont think this is about about privacy as she has posted pictures of me and my family before eg: at her birthday .

Baking07 · 17/07/2026 14:17

I am surprised that you are happy for your house to be used like this.

Perhaps some people are just far more private but I really think that is an enormous violation of privacy and beyond tacky.

The fact she invited herself for a week tracks completely.

She's a user and a really tacky one at that.
You are very casual about your privacy, no matter how lovely the home.

I would be genuinely stunned if someone behaved like that.
Once photos are up, they are out of your control.

Its why I have zero media presence and my children have been reared to be very private.

RainbowMoonbeam · 16/07/2026 12:01

Maybe a little, but if she has a lot of public views she may have been focused on your personal privacy, I'm assuming pics of your home/garden didn't include precise location or address.

I really dont think it about privacy as she has posted pictures of me and my family before eg: at her birthday party recently. The pics of my home and garden did have labels eg holiday/holiday home and the name of my house, also the location ie: place name . Tbh a quick google of those would give the full address.

Personally I wouldn't want photos of my home plastered over the internet. Shouldn't the friend ask permission or something before she did this. Admittedly I know very little about the protocols of social media.

Im with you but, think it seems to be common practice these days to post pics of everywhere and anywhere!

Even though she probably didn't include you to protect your privacy, I would be annoyed that she didnt ask first to post pictures of your house. If you plan to see her again, I would pm her and say " hey, next time its no problem to include pictures of us, please dont bother going through the hassle of removing us, but if you wouldn't mind letting me know what pictures of our house you intend to share first before posting."
That makes your expectations clear and no surprises.

I really dont think it about privacy, she has posted pictures of us before eg: at her birthday and an event for her child recently,i honestly dont want to embarrass her so have decided to say nothing if it happens again i think i will discuss it face to face with her.

Baking07 · 17/07/2026 14:25

You really don't think pictures of your holiday home, with full address isn't a burglary risk?

MargoLivebetter · 17/07/2026 14:26

@allthingsinmoderationyou keep saying you don’t want to embarrass your friend by asking her why she posted your home on Instagram. Why do you think that it is an embarrassing subject or would be a source of embarrassment?

allthingsinmoderation · 17/07/2026 14:29

EarringsandLipstick · 15/07/2026 19:20

Many OTT responses here.

are you on IG, OP? If not, she’s being polite not to include you.

I imagine what she’s doing is posting in a certain aesthetic way ie photos of places / food, rather than people. I really doubt it’s some aspirational style of influencing or that she’s pretending it’s AirBnB or gifted.

Perhaps she could have asked if you were ok to be pictured / tagged but I don’t think it’s as deep an issue as you (or really other posters) are making it.

I am on IG (but not very active) She has recently posted pics of me and my family at events eg: her birthday ,so i really dont think it a privacy issue. The pictures of my home ,garden ,food i cooked and restaurants and picturesque places we took them to did include her,her husband and 4 children. They were curated, filtered images . I still dont really understand it tbh .

Erm, okay!

Poppingby · 17/07/2026 14:42

I don't know why but the detail about food you cooked featuring has incensed me! I would have to comment.

Honestly OP, are you being a bit obtuse?
If I knew you IRL and saw this, I would presume you were ok with all this and be cringing for you.
It reads as a bit desperate and showy, which she clearly is.
Her business, but she has dragged you into it.

I think there's a difference between posting photos of you at the party she hosted, presumably with more people there, and posting photos of you in your own home though.

Its not my holiday home, its my one and only home.
she used the labels holiday/holiday home and the name of my house/and the location as in nearest large town.
It would be possible to find the address if you googled that .
i hadn't considered the security issues though....

Possibly is different but she has posted pictures of me and my family at events so i dont think the reason she didnt post any pictures of us anywhere not just in our home eg: we went to festival and she posted many curated pictures and cropped us out.

Id be commenting underneath saying. " look lovely where you stayed , what were the owners like 🤭😉"

I'm not going to comment on her IG as i've decided to let it go this time and i really don't want to embarrass her as she is actually a nice person despite this strange photogate issue
But if i were to comment id use your suggestion !

A fairly typical case of Late onset Main Character syndrome. Symptoms are usually fairly easy to spot, delusion, carefully curated people less pictures, grandiose claims or avoiding the facts plus deeply narcissistic #tags. Including #livingmybestlife #perfectfamilyholiday. I am afraid there is no cure they have absolutely no shame.

Let me consider the security issues of essentially having multiple photos of the interior (and garden/exterior) of your home along with an easily found full address for you 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔.

Yes there are security issues. You seem to be quite happy with that though. Can you link to the Instagram post so we can check out your taste in interior shizzle?
