AIBU to find my friend's Instagram posts about her stay rather odd?

AIBU to think this very odd behaviour or am i just behind the times: My friend of 30 yrs ,we met at primary school ,she lives 100 miles from me came to visit with her husband and 4 children for a week. We live in a touristy place. We spent a lovely week taking them to local places with our family, pretty villages, restaurants, museums, beaches etc, My friend is very active on social media particularly Instagram. I have instagram but am not very active.
After my friends stay she posted pictures of her stay, each place we had visited including my house and garden as if it were a magazine photo shoot,it was as if they lived in my house or it was a holiday home and we didn't exist. She captioned the photos holiday/holiday home/family holiday. In fact she had erased us from some photos. Is this strange or am i behind the times?

You may be right! We may not be asthetically pleasing enough for insta!
I think you could have cracked it.
Perhaps i need a "glow up"...

I don't think that's it OP, I'm sure you all look fine! Seems more likely that insta friend wanted to create the impression she either owns your lovely house or rented it for a family holiday. Are you better off than her? Personally I'd be commenting "really enjoyed having you to stay, hope we can get together again soon" on every post...

I'd comment on a house photo 'you've made it look amazing. Perhaps we should start renting it out and you could give us 5 stars on Tripadvisor'

This is perfect!

crikeymikey123 · 15/07/2026 10:50

It really annoys me when friends pull out their phones to film and post on social media during hangouts.
Like, can we just be present and enjoy the moment instead of turning everything into content?

Calliopespa · 15/07/2026 10:52

It is and it isn't weird.

I think it would have been even worse if she had included your name and photos of your family to accompany the photos of your home.

So not including you guys I actually think is reasonable.

BUT posting someone else's home is weird anyway.

The whole insta culture is performative and braggy and weird. People posting photos of their restaurant food and every movement (and no, I wouldn;t be surprised if the odd bowel movement brag photo sneaks in) is just so unbelievably desperate.

So it's weird at a fundamental level but probably not weird from an insta perspective because ... well that's how people use it.

I’d find that odd - I’d also be cross that she had posted images of my home on SM without my knowledge or consent. I’d ask her to remove them - or ask Insta to.

She should have asked you in advance !

I would be annoyed .

Sadly, I think this is a sign of the times now. DD and I visited a lake district spot last week and it was full of instagrammers /influencers getting pics by the lake.

Sad !

She did crop us out of photos , She did say thank you for having us.
She did caption holiday/holiday home.

I think she wants to make it seem like she’s been #gifted a stay in a beautiful place in peak season, not just gone to stay with mates.

i have a bit of a dim view of these types tbh

I suppose i dont want to embarrass or offend her in any way. I just want to understand if this is a modern phenomena that i havent grasped or if its a bit odd.
She invited herself tbh ,i agreed because she is a nice person,i just thought this issue strange.

I just want to understand if this is a modern phenomena that i havent grasped or if its a bit odd.

Hmm really?

So if it was a 'modern phenomena' you wouldn't say anything to her?

This is strange because it's clearly pissed you off so just get her told.

And if she really did put 'holiday home', then obviously point out that it isn't.

additional post to note a PPs comment about privacy, maybe? But why take pics of your home and why not ask to put a nice pic up of you all! She came to visit you after all, not your home

But did she? Or was it a free holiday for her and her family?

ohdear2 · 15/07/2026 11:12

I'm sorry she has basically used you to get footage for her instragram implying they either own the house or have rented the house. The fact she did not discussed with you first before posting images of your house to her followers would be a friendship breaker with me. Posting the odd photo of staying at a friends with that friend in it yes, posting that friend's house without that friend in it and setting it all up like professional shots ... really apaulling especially after you have been so generous with her.

For her I can imagine she shows the post to other holiday home owners and says let me stay in your house for a week for free and I will post a spread of photos like this one in return.

Or just people taking photos whilst they're on a nice day out and posting it to their FB or IG later?
Not everyone's an "influencer" 😕

OkMaybe · 15/07/2026 11:22

She wants it to look like she has a lovely second home! As a poster said above, write a message underneath saying "was so lovely to have you to stay, you've made our house look lovely" - cheeky madam. People are terrible! I mean, she clearly didn't even tag you and thought she'd slip the pics in since you are not on Instagram much. It's hilarious 😀

euff · 15/07/2026 11:31

I don’t think your privacy was the sole reason - she could have just asked about sharing pics with you in or saying that they were visiting you. It seems she wanted it to look like a paid for holiday and holiday home. If you have mutual friends they may be raising an eyebrow at it. I do like the suggestions to comment on it!

Dweetfidilove · 15/07/2026 11:39

Noshadelamp · 15/07/2026 08:01

I would reply saying "so lovely to host you and spend so much time together, wow you've made our house look amazing like something out of a magazine 😁"

She's being cheeky, making out she stayed at a fancy Airbnb!

This would be my response, and she'd likely zap that comment so quickly 😃.

Newsenmum · 15/07/2026 11:44

I think it’s good she edited you out but could have written “stayed with some lovely friends” not pretended your place is a hotel!

TorroFerney · 15/07/2026 11:51

Baking07 · 15/07/2026 08:44

Posting pictures of your private home is extremely off.
How rude and intrusive.

I agree. I’ve got photos from my daughters prom well before it where she’s at a friends who has a lovely enormous house and a vintage car so we have photos in the house and one next to the car. I would not dream of putting them on social media , I’ve showed a friend and my mum the photos as they are nice photos of my daughter but nowhere else.

I have watched them all - what exactly is like the beginning?

Obviously not. After what happened to Ann Widdecombe Op, I would have her delete any picks of your home and garden that might indicate how to access the place or the layout.

The last part of your post is absolutely batshit, no one is trawling IG to find potential victims.

That’s really weird, and I’d definitely comment saying “it was such fun having you stay with us, glad you enjoyed it!”

Im not pissed off,i just thought it a bit strange and didnt really understand it,,just my opinion and i wanted to see what other opinions were.
If lots of other said this is common practice ie; photographing and posting you and your families activities, meals,a friend home without posting your friends i would accepts its common practice and its me thats out of touch i suppose.

This has made me think....
I suppose we are "better off" in term of out home not necessarily in terms of current income .
I dont want to embarrass her.She does aspire to the finer things in life and her instagram is curated with a rosy spin generally, perhaps does just want show her and her family in an aspirational way?

My DILs best friend wanted a baby shower. Best friend chose the venue, decided who should be invited and chose the things that my DIL should buy to decorate the place ( DIL was given money for this). The Instagram post she put up was ' you guys !!!! Thought I was going out for a coffee with x and then all these lovely people turned up. What a surprise '. I'm old so it just seems deeply weird to me, especially when you've tagged all the people who were invited by you to ' totally surprise 'you .

Wow,how strange!
I think im just a bit out of touch with the social media thing,
I cant help thinking some people are under a lot of pressure to perform ...

She has embarrassed herself. She hasn’t acknowledged the person who facilitated those lovely photos and excellent adventures.

No book, article, movie, documentary or study is published without appropriate acknowledgement.

Your friend has happily been very rude to you and about you.

She did caption holiday/holiday home.

In that case I think it’s a bit weird that she’s trying to hide that she stayed with a friend. Sounds like she is trying to portray a certain image of her lifestyle that doesn’t match reality. Perhaps she is insecure about her income. But if she has thanked you and been grateful then I would ignore the post/not mention it
