AIBU to find my friend's Instagram posts about her stay rather odd?

AIBU to think this very odd behaviour or am i just behind the times: My friend of 30 yrs ,we met at primary school ,she lives 100 miles from me came to visit with her husband and 4 children for a week. We live in a touristy place. We spent a lovely week taking them to local places with our family, pretty villages, restaurants, museums, beaches etc, My friend is very active on social media particularly Instagram. I have instagram but am not very active.
After my friends stay she posted pictures of her stay, each place we had visited including my house and garden as if it were a magazine photo shoot,it was as if they lived in my house or it was a holiday home and we didn't exist. She captioned the photos holiday/holiday home/family holiday. In fact she had erased us from some photos. Is this strange or am i behind the times?

Lots of people I know don't want to be in photos in Instagram/Facebook anymore. Especially if her account is public, she would have assumed you don't want your face on there.

I appreciate that but she has previously posted pictures of us eg: at her birthday party etc. i honestly dont think it a privacy isssue.

It’s nothing to do with privacy and let’s face it if she had concerns about posting images without your consent they could have just asked for your consent fgs. Your friend is wanting to project an image of her families life and a bouji beach setting fits the brief. Apparently your house and garden fits the brief but you unfortunately don’t. Im sure it’s not you specifically but Im guessing your friend enjoys an aspirational image and “ here’s my holiday home “ has a different vibe to “ here’s my friend in her lovely garden”. There is always the option of not posting anything to SM - shock horror.

You may be right! We may not be asthetically pleasing enough for insta!
I think you could have cracked it.
Perhaps i need a "glow up"...

Can you not just ask her? If she took photos of you and your family did she ask if you minded if she posted them on her social media? Would you have minded had she done so without asking you?

Howyoudoings · 15/07/2026 09:09

I agree with others it’s for privacy, she prop didn’t mind posting you at her party as it was her party and a public space .

MySneakyLion · 15/07/2026 09:10

She’s trying to portray an image to viewers of being wealthier than they are - oh look we can afford a week in this lovely place in this popular tourist area, we are rich …

Poppingby · 15/07/2026 09:11

I think specifically the house thing is a thing. It's not necessarily showing off about her holiday it's just that a nice picture of a house/garden with very little context is good enough for insta if it looks nice because literally what it looks like is the thing, not whose house it is or why the poster was there. That's why insta is weird.

Additionally you might find that she has divvied up the 'content' to make it last longer and her next post is more about summer evenings with long shadows laughing with friends by candlelight etc

I suppose i dont want to embarrass or offend her in any way. I just want to understand if this is a modern phenomena that i havent grasped or if its a bit odd.
She invited herself tbh ,i agreed because she is a nice person,i just thought this issue strange.

Hmmm, you are very considerate. Surely she should be extending you the same courtesy by checking you were ok with your private home being featured on her SM?

I think it sounds fine unless she has included photos of her own family and cropped you out of everything. I would expect to be in a couple of photos if there are ones of people, but she is probably putting the photos up to share with her own family. I assume she thanked you for hosting her in person or a message, so putting that on Instagram would be a bit redundant. I’m assuming she didn’t caption it as though she owns the house, and I’d be flattered she thought my home was Insta-worthy

She did crop us out of photos , She did say thank you for having us.
She did caption holiday/holiday home.

Exactly this.

I think is actually trying to be considerate because she knows you don’t post much on social media.

As i said earlier ,she has posted pictures of us before eg: at her birthday so i honestly dont think it a privacy issue.

You don’t really like her
she invited herself
you don’t even seem to have enjoyed the stay

allthingsinmoderation · 15/07/2026 09:01

I honestly dont think its privacy, she has posted pics of our family before eg: at her birthday party and my kids are young adults and are active on social media.

I agree that if she is so conscious about your privacy then posting photos of your house (which for most people would be far more of an invasion if their privacy than a few random group photos) is far weirder/ruder!

it is a bit strange, particularly the deliberately erasing you and your family out of photos! Do you think perhaps she is pretending to people who dont know you that its her own holiday home? Is your house quite brag worthy?

RVectensian · 15/07/2026 09:18

I would assume she wants to make out it is either a family holiday home or something they have paid for, instead of a freebie.

wildnwilde · 15/07/2026 09:19

MsIceSandwich · 15/07/2026 07:49

She probably wanted to protect your privacy.

She wanted to show off a created a false narrative of her owning ops home as a holiday home

JuliaBraverman · 15/07/2026 09:20

Does she have a big following?

wildnwilde · 15/07/2026 09:22

Comment it was lovely to host you
Hope you enjoyed are beautiful home

Delphiniumandlupins · 15/07/2026 09:23

She's trying to make it look as though she payed to stay in your home rather than had a free holiday (which she requested). Cropping you out of photos could be respect for your privacy but then she should have asked before posting pictures of your home. The reason she will have included you in party photos is to give the message "Look how many friends I have who all want to come to my parties". Did any of her captions include holiday with friends/spending time with friends etc?

mindutopia · 15/07/2026 09:24

Noshadelamp · 15/07/2026 08:01

I would reply saying "so lovely to host you and spend so much time together, wow you've made our house look amazing like something out of a magazine 😁"

She's being cheeky, making out she stayed at a fancy Airbnb!

Yes, this. She’s trying to make a point that she could afford a lovely holiday cottage, when in fact, she got a freebie stay with you.

Ophy83 · 15/07/2026 09:27

DH's nieces did this when they came to stay with us in France. I think around 100 photos were posted. DH and DD featured in the background of one photo at the aquarium we took them to as if they were strangers.

MichLBee · 15/07/2026 09:29

I'd absolutely be commenting saying "I'm so glad we got to host you and you all enjoyed staying in my beautiful home and town. We should do it again soon". She's trying to make her life seem more successful than it is and is using your home as a prop. If she deletes the message then I'd be asking her outright why she is doing this and bring up being erased from photos etc.

packapouch · 15/07/2026 09:30

If she truly cared about your privacy she wouldn’t have posted pictures of your home. But I’m also a person who’s very skeptical of influencers are the lifestyle (which is often heavily edited and might not even be true) that they’re trying to peddle.

Mnetcurious · 15/07/2026 09:31

I think this kind of thing (the pictures) is the norm on instagram but that doesn’t mean it’s ok to pass off staying with a friend as a holiday she’s paid for (ie #holidayhome).

Just another example of how fake the whole thing is.

Gillespiedoesnotknowyet · 15/07/2026 09:32

@allthingsinmoderation
What's her insta? I want to look at the pictures!😂

bestbefore · 15/07/2026 09:32

I’d comment “we were thrilled to host you and your photos really capture our house at its best!” Or similar 😬

SylvanMoon · 15/07/2026 09:33

allthingsinmoderation · 15/07/2026 09:15

As i said earlier ,she has posted pictures of us before eg: at her birthday so i honestly dont think it a privacy issue.

In this case I would definitely ask her or post a comment on one of the cropped photos, asking what's going on? Where have you and your family disappeared to and why?

Lobelia123 · 15/07/2026 09:34

What is it thats bugging you? Does it feel like she's trying to claim credit for your lovely home in some way, like pretending this is her holiday home, or trying to imply that she hired this fabulous place? I do think its weird that she just erased you.... a simple acknowledgement of thanks would be the polite thing to do ie a big thank you to X for hosting us for the week or similar.
