AIBU to find my friend's Instagram posts about her stay rather odd?

AIBU to think this very odd behaviour or am i just behind the times: My friend of 30 yrs ,we met at primary school ,she lives 100 miles from me came to visit with her husband and 4 children for a week. We live in a touristy place. We spent a lovely week taking them to local places with our family, pretty villages, restaurants, museums, beaches etc, My friend is very active on social media particularly Instagram. I have instagram but am not very active.
After my friends stay she posted pictures of her stay, each place we had visited including my house and garden as if it were a magazine photo shoot,it was as if they lived in my house or it was a holiday home and we didn't exist. She captioned the photos holiday/holiday home/family holiday. In fact she had erased us from some photos. Is this strange or am i behind the times?

What is particularly strange is that she has done this knowing that you follow her and would of course see it.

Such close friends but you can’t drop her a line to ask what’s it all about?!

Blueberries0761 · 15/07/2026 08:48

If she's concerned about your privacy then she should have asked before posting photos of your home and garden online. So I don't think that's the reason behind this, more likely she wanted to portray the place as a holiday home for her own strange reasons.

MargoLivebetter · 15/07/2026 08:49

Did she ask you if it was ok to post photos of your home on SM @allthingsinmoderation ? I'm sure you don't want to fall out with your friend, but posting someone's private residential dwelling without their permission goes against most social media guidance on good practice. Not to mention good manners and good friendship!

babyproblems · 15/07/2026 08:52

I don’t think it’s weird.. compliment to you that your home is worthy of instagram!!
I suspect it’s about privacy and also there is a difference between Facebook and instagram - Facebook is more what you describe; family photos etc. Instagram is (now) sort of a Facebook/pinterest hybrid but your friend obviously has a following who are there for inspiration etc so there’s not really any point in putting family pics there. It’s not her audience who it’s likely are loads of random people around the world.
It’s no reflection of you! Xo

Mariettta · 15/07/2026 08:52

I would ask her to remove the pictures of your home. It's not on.

MegMortimer · 15/07/2026 08:53

I see it as she was kind of using you for where you live, and trying to pretend that she can afford a holiday home. Pretty pathetic, actually, and insulting.

Francestein · 15/07/2026 08:53

I would ask her to remove photos of your home. That’s very very rude.

Honeyhonayboo · 15/07/2026 08:54

It’s not really the done thing to share other people on SM. It’s not FB in 2007 anymore.
I don’t see how she was giving the illusion she lived there if she was posting about being on holiday?
Were you upset she didn’t post of you?

RaininSummer · 15/07/2026 08:29

I think she was just trying to show off about her 'holiday' home. No reason she couldn't have captioned it 'lovely stay with friends'

This. Isn’t it sad that we now live in such a sad, pathetic vacuous society that renting a holiday home is viewed as more successful and aspirational than staying with dear friends.

allthingsinmoderation · 15/07/2026 08:55

MsIceSandwich · 15/07/2026 07:49

She probably wanted to protect your privacy.

I had considered that, but she has posted pictures of me and my family previously when we attended events organised by her eg :birthdays etc.

It’s not the done thing to show other people’s homes like you’re a bloody estate agent either. Grossly intrusive!

Really? I don’t regard society like this.

some people are… sure

but I look around my family, friends, colleagues and o sure as hell don’t think they are vacuous, sad and pathetic.

Nor do o think society per se is

I have a friend like this who does similar with food. I roll my eyes and let her get on with it, but it is annoying, especially when we've gone out together and I want to eat and she's setting up the perfect shot!

I think it's a sign of the times where everything 'has' to be documented online. Feels a bit soulless if you ask me.

Funnily enough this did happen!

I would reply saying "so lovely to host you and spend so much time together, wow you've made our house look amazing like something out of a magazine 😁"

She's being cheeky, making out she stayed at a fancy Airbnb!

This.
Bloody rude of her to post as if that's her holiday place and not acknowledge you and your hospitality at all. And to Photoshop you out of photos? I wouldn't be inviting her back. Ever. Free digs and entertainment for a family of 6 for a week? I'd feel used.

Hotthread · 15/07/2026 08:57

Did you enjoy the stay @allthingsinmoderation ? Have you spoken since? Was she a thoughtful and appreciative guest?

People are running away with themselves regarding what was posted, we have very little information and we don’t actually know what was posted.

Hotthread · 15/07/2026 08:58

Why not comment on her post… “what a beautiful house 😜!”

What we do know is a very very close friend of the op of many decades… and the op seems to have come to mumsnet before having a chat with her friend about it

Thing is people will complain that they where put on instagram without consent as well , so I understand why she’s removed you .

it is a bit odd she’s put your house on there .

but tbh I would take it as a compliment. Pictures of my home would definitely not be instagram worthy 🤣

She has posted pictures of our family before when attending her birthday party so i honestly dont think its about consent/privacy.
Some parts of my house arent "instagram worthy" they didnt feature!

FunnyOrca · 15/07/2026 09:00

I would understand it a bit if she asked if you were happy to be posted and you had said no.

Taking photos of someone else’s home is weird though.

Germanyhols · 15/07/2026 07:54

I’d also largely assume privacy, especially if you have kids and aren’t very active on social media. I don’t post pictures of my kids on social media and wouldn’t be happy a friend did.

I honestly dont think its privacy, she has posted pics of our family before eg: at her birthday party and my kids are young adults and are active on social media.

well don’t invite her again and if she’s been a friend that long why not ask?

I suppose i dont want to embarrass or offend her in any way. I just want to understand if this is a modern phenomena that i havent grasped or if its a bit odd.
She invited herself tbh ,i agreed because she is a nice person,i just thought this issue strange.
