Why does everyone hate us so much ?!

1000 replies

englandd · Today 08:52

I’m talking about being English, spent alot of time on the cesspit that is Reddit this World Cup and the vast majority absolutely hate England, I known it stems from the British empire but as far as I’m aware it wasn’t just England who were bad back then was it ? I mean Spain and Portugal took a big part in colonialism too but why is it just the English that gets the hate ?
Last night I would’ve been genuinely happy to support Norway if they went through, I can’t imagine hating another nation so badly. Maybe I shouldn’t take it personally 😆

Aibu ? Do we deserve the hate we get from something that happened hundreds of years ago ? For what it’s worth the British empire were ruthless and I don’t celebrate anything they did, but I also don’t think we should be punished still for something that happened so so long ago.

Is it because English actors always play the baddies in movies, so that translates to the football pitch too for dim American Reddit users? Grin

Imanautumn · Today 09:35

Poppingby · Today 09:00

Because many English football fans are racist thugs who have typically misbehaved in other people's countries probably.

That’s such cliche nonsense.

The thing is, you can afford to go all out on the humour when you actually stand zero chance of winning.
We do have a bit of humour about it (Three Lions song is tongue in cheek for example), but yeah, we stand a chance and so we are going to take it seriously.

You wouldnt expect France or Spain or Germany to be constantly all about the bantz would you?

💯

Easy when you’re the underdog.

Gowlett · Today 09:35

I don’t know really, I’m from a country where we’re popular all over the world, it’s a nice feeling! Though, we’ve been treated terribly in the past… I’ve lived in the UK & I like it there, I like the English. Always thought that Americans love the Brits? Not everyone, where I live, feels the same way at as me!

TheMasterplan23 · Today 09:35

Whattheflock · Today 08:59

It’s the jingoistic way you all bang on about it “coming home”, like England has the absolutely right to win everything - and how incredibly unbearable you will all be if you actually win.

it gives me the shivers.

come on Argentina!

Really? I’d say more people thought that about the American’s.

Nos4r2 · Today 09:36

Beachtastic · Today 09:01

I think the English are also seen as snobs, and Brexit didn't help in that regard!

I was waiting for Brexit to rearrange its head.
I dont think any other country cares if we are part of the European Union or not.

And I think what really annoys the Welsh and Scottish is that most English people couldn’t give a flying fuck that you don’t support us 😂🥳

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

this is obviously not true considering there have been numerous posts on here throughout the World Cup asking why the rest of the Uk support Anyone But England and why does everyone not like us posts too!

Agree with this. I am English and don't want them to win for these reasons.

Bigtrapeze · Today 09:37

Radrover · Today 09:25

My husband is English, I‘m Irish. We travel a lot. We’re always surprised (well getting less surprised!) at the reaction we get asked about our nationalities, people immediately speak to me and ask me about Ireland-he gets ignored. Even in India where they do seem to love the English despite historical events, they always had a more enthusiastic reaction when I told them I was Irish.

I think this is a sort of positive prejudice because in my experience the Irish travel really broadly and are very welcome guests due to being so respectful, friendly and pleasant wherever they go. I have never, ever heard anyone working in tourism express anything but the greatest appreciation for the presence of the Irish. You just do it better than a small but memorable minority of my countrymen/women. I'm a bit jealous if I'm honest, Radrover. Your stereotype beats ours, I think, but like all stereotypes it's not broadly true as I'm sure your DH is equally lovely.

GotALionInMyPocket · Today 09:37

SoftDay · Today 09:03

I'm Irish and I'm up for England, but kind of clandestinely. I wouldn't be cheering for them in a pub, like, but I'm happy they're through. This may be a poor reflection on me 😁.
Harry Kane is a lovely chap.

😊

That is literally just us having a laugh given it was 1966 the last time it came home! The English are just very good at taking the piss out of themselves, and everyone else thinks we are being for real.

football coming home is just a song released by 3 comedians in 1996!

englandd · Today 09:37

Poppingby · Today 09:34

Right. You might hate the answer or think it's unfair. But you can't possibly believe it's not a contributing factor to why people hate the idea of England winning the football world cup. Other countries' fans behaviour have literally nothing to do with it because you're taking about England (football team. I don't think of that as 'us' personally).

Well then surely that should extend to other countries possibly winning who also have thuggish fans ? My point is, why is it only the English ?

As a Scot, I can confirm we don’t hate you. We just can’t stand your endless “it’s coming home” crap from the media. It’s not just football, it’s the same with Rugby and it’s constant from weeks before a tournament starts. If you watch the news, it’s all England. For most Scots, it’s banter. Banter you don’t get and take too personally. Anyone but England 🇦🇷

What is so bad about being excited to think that we might bring the world cup home? Does this only apply to England fans?
Maybe its just jealousy? We have brought it home once already and are 2 games away from doing it again.
Which is more than Scotland have 🤣

Animatic · Today 09:37

They hate Argentina more than England. And the US gets the cake of being the most hated.
Ideally you ought to be a cuddly squeacky clean underdog to be liked. Which is ok.
Just hope England brings it home this time ❤️

GotALionInMyPocket · Today 09:38

I think it’s a bit like hating Americans op.
Sure individually some of them are lovely. But it’s the general “we’re better than everyone else” vibe that puts people off.

ChavsAreReal · Today 09:38

You know Reddit isnt in anyway representative of real life?

Coldcoffeekindamorning · Today 09:38

I think there is an English arrogance that rubs people up the wrong way. Things like in the media they refer to Britian as England. Andy Murray picked up on this when he said when he lost he was Scottish and when he won he was British. It comes across that England think they are better and more important than the other countries especially in the union. That comes through in many other aspects of life not just sport. I think this is a huge part of it and that's why people are not keen on the idea of England.

ClassActress · Today 09:38

BerryTwister · Today 09:27

@ClassActress no one hates the Germans like they hate the English, despite what they did in living memory.

Fair point.

English people are arrogant in general!!

think the football team are great and deserve to be top even though they are rubbish!

go to other countries, expect people to speak English - why should we learn another language. But expect people to Speak English when there are here. Never embrace the culture. Only have to go on holiday to Spain and there’s English pubs everywhere serving English food for example.

the sub culture of drinking and being loud and obnoxious! Think 18-30 style holidays that were all over the TV showing vile behaviour and people still behaving like that.

JackGrealishsCalves · Today 09:40

I dunno, I'm English through and through, a football fan, but was actually rooting for Norway last night 😅.
