Why does everyone hate us so much ?!

I’m talking about being English, spent alot of time on the cesspit that is Reddit this World Cup and the vast majority absolutely hate England, I known it stems from the British empire but as far as I’m aware it wasn’t just England who were bad back then was it ? I mean Spain and Portugal took a big part in colonialism too but why is it just the English that gets the hate ?
Last night I would’ve been genuinely happy to support Norway if they went through, I can’t imagine hating another nation so badly. Maybe I shouldn’t take it personally 😆

Aibu ? Do we deserve the hate we get from something that happened hundreds of years ago ? For what it’s worth the British empire were ruthless and I don’t celebrate anything they did, but I also don’t think we should be punished still for something that happened so so long ago.

I don't drink at all anymore so there you go.

Listen you can work yourself up into whatever level of defensive vitriol you like but the fact remains - the reason the English are unpopular GENERALLY is because you don't do yourselves any favours en masse. It's not some big conspiracy against you. It's that a large cohort behave in an unpleasant way.

If you want a side by side example look at any TV show with the same format but has an English and Irish version; eg. First Dates or Come Dine With Me. You can spot the differences a mile off in how they treat their counterparts. Or even this forum...

The irony ...

Probably becsuse they never do very well in the world cup?
And its all daft anyway the four nations are so close together there will have been lots of movement across them over the centuaries
With lots of us sharing heritage

Yes I’m half Irish myself ! Just didn’t grow up there and nor did my dad so we wasn’t raised in the culture

Is the difference that the Irish versions are hideously white?

Since we live in a world that is dominated by the English language, and the American culture, the world is aware of the British empire in a way that it is not aware of, of other empires
So say there an American singer of Irish origin, who is really popular, and who writes a song referring to the Famine, people of many nationalities would hear this song and become super aware of the Famine. . If it was a Dutch or French or Turkish song( counties who have all had empires and have events they'd rather forget) many less people would hear it. I mean, who's aware of Dutch colonialism?

I don’t think people deny it, it’s just frustrating when people make statements like ‘how English people’ what all of them?!

Plus, are we the only nation with some thuggish lousy people as football fans- I certainly think not!

Also, I think there’s an element of I’m English, I’ll speak bad about England, but you’re not English, you best not.

Edited

Ok, fair enough on these points.

Growing up in the 80s we mainly just heard about England and had English visitors. It was later on in life I watched some documentaries about very violent football gangs who were not English.

Similarly Irish people LOVE to rant about what a shit hole our country is but only we are allowed. We do get welcomed with open arms absolutely everywhere though, it's a running joke about how amazing we are everywhere else.

Thats fascinating, apparently "Leading historians argue that after the 1707 Act of Union, Scots were active agents and disproportionately benefited from the British Empire, playing brutal roles in colonial expansion, indigenous displacement, and the transatlantic slave trade" too.

What’s that got to to with football?

Envy shoots at others and wounds itself.
an old English proverb.

Maybe a country 10% of the size of England just doesn’t have quite the diversity of population 🤷‍♀️

Why's that then, are they welcoming of diversity? It's the size of London but they don't have a problem with diversity.

Right but this whole thread 'everybody hates us' is a big fat statement like that isn't it? Everybody who? Literally everybody? Hates? Really? Very extreme language. Us who? All of us? It's just a stupid starting point really. No offence op.

Then you really need listen to they lyrics
Theu are tsking the piss out of themselves
Becsuse they know that England have a faint chance if winning but ususlly cock it up at the last minute on penalties or whatever
Also it waa written for Euro 96 when The tournament came home and was played in England .

I understand the genesis of the song and I know the spirit in which it was written but there’s something about the pathetic persistence of hopefulness that makes me cringe. Its so childish and not in a good way.

You are delusional, do you actually think most nations give a shit except the U .S.? The English are not hated everywhere just BS. I appreciate this must be disappointing to you.

It’s a bloody football anthem, it’s supposed to be a bit silly and childish! Vindaloo? Ant & Dec’s “We’re on the ball”? They’re hardly penned by Bob Dylan.

And what? I was responding to posters pointing out that the song was tongue in cheek and self deprecating. I know this. I still find it embarrassing when grown men and women (mainly men) sing it.
