Why does everyone hate us so much ?!

I’m talking about being English, spent alot of time on the cesspit that is Reddit this World Cup and the vast majority absolutely hate England, I known it stems from the British empire but as far as I’m aware it wasn’t just England who were bad back then was it ? I mean Spain and Portugal took a big part in colonialism too but why is it just the English that gets the hate ?
Last night I would’ve been genuinely happy to support Norway if they went through, I can’t imagine hating another nation so badly. Maybe I shouldn’t take it personally 😆

Aibu ? Do we deserve the hate we get from something that happened hundreds of years ago ? For what it’s worth the British empire were ruthless and I don’t celebrate anything they did, but I also don’t think we should be punished still for something that happened so so long ago.

As a Scot, I can confirm we don’t hate you. We just can’t stand your endless “it’s coming home” crap from the media. It’s not just football, it’s the same with Rugby and it’s constant from weeks before a tournament starts. If you watch the news, it’s all England. For most Scots, it’s banter. Banter you don’t get and take too personally. Anyone but England 🇦🇷

My Brazilian neighbours were cheering very loudly for England last night!

I thought a lot of the dislike and contempt for the English is to do with their disgraceful behaviour when on holiday in other people's countries.
Including their arrogance in not feeling the need to bother learning other people's languages.

I would love to answer this by saying I am English but fluently speak many languages but sadly I have minimal French and can ask a German pen friend if they have brothers and sisters. You are completely correct, sadly.

I don’t know really, I guess I’m just sick of seeing the same old hatred for the English and can’t wrap my head around it

You don't need to. You just need to laugh it off and move on. You're never going to stop the bigots from being hypocrites. Fuck em.

It’s the jingoistic way you all bang on about it “coming home”, like England has the absolutely right to win everything - and how incredibly unbearable you will all be if you actually win.

it gives me the shivers.

come on Argentina!

Ah well its not like other world cup winning countries have ever "banged on" about their win, is it 🤔

I'm Irish and I'm up for England, but kind of clandestinely. I wouldn't be cheering for them in a pub, like, but I'm happy they're through. This may be a poor reflection on me 😁.
Harry Kane is a lovely chap.

I watched the game last night with an Irish family member and it was pretty cute as he inadvertently let out a cheer when England scored and when i elbowed him he said "look the blood runs green but the web runs red"

This! I don't know any English fan who is confident in it coming home. 60 years of hurt!

Same.

I think every game we’ve played so far we’ve said, ‘not sure it’s coming home’ during the match. Followed by, ‘I think it might be coming home’ after it.

It's just a joke!

As much as I’d love them to, I’m not confident and not sure I know many who are.

Although, getting close now😁

It would seem to be popular on MN to think that everyone in the whole world hates us, same as a lot of MNers evidently think the U.K. is shit and everywhere else is better.
However as someone who has travelled very widely in many parts of the world, and has lived in different countries, it’s never been my experience at all that ‘everyone’ hates us. Not at all.

The Troubles did not happen hundreds of years ago.

Because many English football fans are racist thugs who have typically misbehaved in other people's countries probably.

This. A significant number of fans go out of their way to cause chaos, destruction and misery when they go anywhere to apparently support England. They are shameful. It’s got nothing to do with colonialism (though the point about the US is a good one. Why they think Britons give a shit about the US I’ve no idea. Probably something to do with the brainwashing that the US is the greatest place in the world so we must be miserable that it’s not still part of the non-existent empire).

If England fans were anything like Scotland fans this would not be an issue. England fans behaviour is in large part loathsome, so they loathe the English.

Yes. This is true. Plus it doesn't come home, largely. We could be admired for our optimism, I suppose. And yes, not all of us are as good at identifying banter after a football loss and some beer, as the news will verify. Sorry.

Poppingby · Yesterday 09:14

englandd · Yesterday 09:07

See it’s this kind of thing too, you do know every single country in the world has their own (small minority) of complete dickheads supporting their team? You can’t tar the behaviour of some fans onto an entire nation

I'm English. I don't hate England. But I fucking hate hooligans and they are what gives us our bad football reputation. England is a huge footballing country and so it's going to have more hooligans than less footballing countries. Other countries' hooligans are beside the point though because YOU are taking about England.

I don't know why you ask a question if you don't want to know the answer, love.

In fairness there are only about 3 million Scotland fans

Tben · Yesterday 09:15

I saw a series of interviews with Norwegian fans last night who were asked if Norway can’t win the World Cup, who they would want to win. They all, to a man, said England and praised English football. So not much hate there.

Football is full of irrational (or rational) rivalries and hatred. I HATE Sheffield United. I’ve got lots of ill founded bullshit “reasons” for that. The reality is it’s just rivalry and there’s no objectively good reason to hate them.

EarringsandLipstick · Yesterday 09:15

I’m Irish and absolutely don’t lean into the anti-English rhetoric or refusal to support England, ever but there is an underlying antipathy to England that is linked to the British colonial past, which for some countries, eg Ireland, is certainly not far in the past, and the consequences of which are still felt.

However, as well as the pathetic anti-English chants & behaviour that a small minority display here, there’s a broad interest in England and their results, even if not fully supportive.

Regarding football, specifically though, the English fans (not every fan, but many of them) are the issue; ‘football’s coming home’ , the demeanour, jingoistic attitudes, drinking - English fans do not serve England well.

Timble · Yesterday 09:15

A postman who delivers where I work is Irish but has lived in England for around 40 years, he made it very clear he’ll support literally any other team rather than England. It kind of put me off him to be honest, seemed like he wanted to cause a bit of drama. I said that’s a Shame as you said you love living in England, why be so against the country you live in? He just shrugged and said ‘come on Norway’.

Obviously none of the other countries have any racism at all ever. 🙄

The small minority of poor fans should not tarnish the majority.

@MaggieBsBoat ”England fans behaviour is in large part loathsome, so they loathe the English.”

I’ve been all over Europe and never been loathed, quite the opposite.
People can separate the drunken dickheads from the rest of the population.

SomeOtherUser · Yesterday 09:16

PPs are right that the overwhelming majority of the world's population don't get irony!

It's sort of amusing that while English is increasingly the global language, idiomatic nuanced English, irony and friendly sarcasm remains baffling for most as it simply doesn't exist as a concept in most other languages!

Do you know this for a fact? I can speak several languages well enough to know that each and every one contains irony and sarcasm.🤔

I would say the "hate", such as it is, is largely due to poorly behaved Brits abroad, and the classic British arrogance. Not dissimilar to the US arrogance in thinking they're the only country where you can be free and be a success.

Is it a ‘small minority’? If so, it’s a loud, very visible one. That broadly isn’t seen from other countries.

Jealousy. Everyone wants to be British and feels inferior because they aren't. We are the epitome of something or other. Even though we are pretty shit.

Bit sad really for him and hus type. We have a tiny hope each time there is a competition and receive hate from people who might be a bit jealous?

In fairness I think that countries where the teams never (or rarely) get through need a "reason" to watch, if you get me. Being "anyone but...." gets the blood pumping in a way you already get if your country is playing, if you see what I mean. So it sort of makes sense to me

Where do you get that he’s jealous? He doesn’t want to support England, that’s all. He lives there, but is entitled to make that choice 🤷🏻‍♀️

I agree. I have been to a good few countries around the world and people, on finding out we are English, love to talk to us and love to talk about England.
This anti English shit has been exacerbatted (like many things) since the advent of social media .
All I would say is anyone who hates England and the English so much then they are free to fuck off anywhere else they choose.
I believe North Korea is nice at this time of year 😉
