Why does everyone hate us so much ?!

1000 replies

englandd · Today 08:52

I’m talking about being English, spent alot of time on the cesspit that is Reddit this World Cup and the vast majority absolutely hate England, I known it stems from the British empire but as far as I’m aware it wasn’t just England who were bad back then was it ? I mean Spain and Portugal took a big part in colonialism too but why is it just the English that gets the hate ?
Last night I would’ve been genuinely happy to support Norway if they went through, I can’t imagine hating another nation so badly. Maybe I shouldn’t take it personally 😆

Aibu ? Do we deserve the hate we get from something that happened hundreds of years ago ? For what it’s worth the British empire were ruthless and I don’t celebrate anything they did, but I also don’t think we should be punished still for something that happened so so long ago.

I would say we don’t hate the English but the British media who are mainly English who talk about 1966 as if it was last year, coming home, three lions song, all we heard on commentary last night and every game is we, we , we, we. A lot of people watching last night are not England fans and should have neutral commentators. Also an independent referee was discussing the penalty given saying it wasn’t a penalty due to the position of the leg and 15 minutes later and the commentator was still disagreeing with her saying England deserved it. I think for me mainly it’s the entitlement that they should be winning every game.

Andy Murray was always British when he won but Scottish if he lost. Same with Sir Chris Hoy.

also dislike that people say if you live in the UK you should be supporting the home nations, never going to happen. Our team is Glasgow rangers, we aren’t going to support Celtic in any game , no Manchester City fan would support Manchester United and no Newcastle United fan will support Sunderland. It’s just not going to happen.

You are quite right. My DD asked about whether the commentary was neutral or pro England last night. I think we just can't help ourselves. You are also correct about Andy Murray. We'll claim anyone for a win. Greg Rusedski for example, who seemed very Canadian to me.

What’s your point?

@ClassActress no one hates the Germans like they hate the English, despite what they did in living memory.

Poppingby · Today 09:28

BerryTwister · Today 09:23

@Poppingby is this a joke? Some other country’s fans make monkey noises and throw bananas on the pitch when black players come on.

Why can't my post and yours be true at the same time @BerryTwister?

My husband is English, I‘m Irish. We travel a lot. We’re always surprised (well getting less surprised!) at the reaction we get asked about our nationalities, people immediately speak to me and ask me about Ireland-he gets ignored. Even in India where they do seem to love the English despite historical events, they always had a more enthusiastic reaction when I told them I was Irish.

We are Scottish and find that when we go abroad locals say “English?” When they first hear us talk and when we say “no Scottish “ they always cheer and are much more friendly.

It's national sport! It's by definition a bit xenophobic otherwise nobody would care who won 🤣

In all seriousness, anglocentrism is annoying. I would imagine most English people don't even notice the discrepancy in reporting and the air of superiority which permeates sports coverage. The other nations do. It comes across as arrogant. We are more sensitive to this stuff because of cultural history too though I think.

I'm Welsh. We supported Scotland and now whoever England are playing.

And I think what really annoys the Welsh and Scottish is that most English people couldn’t give a flying fuck that you don’t support us 😂🥳

englandd · Today 09:28

Poppingby · Today 09:14

I'm English. I don't hate England. But I fucking hate hooligans and they are what gives us our bad football reputation. England is a huge footballing country and so it's going to have more hooligans than less footballing countries. Other countries' hooligans are beside the point though because YOU are taking about England.

I don't know why you ask a question if you don't want to know the answer, love.

The answer is debatable though, you can’t say it’s only the English fans that have behaved appallingly. I also think it’s not as rife these days, and quite rightly so, but of course there is still some horrible people about, not just in England. There was a video the other day of Argentinians fans being openly racist to a black fan. So I don’t think that should be used as one of the reasons to hate the English

I’m Scottish, have lived in England for over half my life. I like it. It’s not ‘the English’ we hate. It’s football/sports commentators who bang on about winning, whatever the sport. I mean- ‘it’s coming home’. Mate, in 60 years we’ve seen Google maps and satnav and it’s still never found its way home. Maybe time for a new song. There’s also a lack of humour in English fans- where’s the wit of the Tartan Army or Norwegians, for example? I’ve been reminding my English born son that he likes tacos, so must have Mexican ancestry, that as an half Scot he’s definitely got Viking blood and now, that he’s been to Argentina, likes steak, and also loves chocolate so must have Swiss or Argentinian ties. He knows I’m joking…Instead it’s xenophobic chants or banging on about the Second World War from English fans, not to mention the racism shown to so many of their players-by their own supposed fans. You just need to look at threads like this where people are wringing their hands about no one liking England to see the complete lack of appreciation that 90% is banter and witty. So, the racism, the fighting and trashing when you lose… while that may be diminishing it still happens- hence bars and restaurants closing early etc…

Timble · Today 09:29

Where do you get that he’s jealous? He doesn’t want to support England, that’s all. He lives there, but is entitled to make that choice 🤷🏻‍♀️

Of course I agree everyone is entitled to make a choice but to actively support literally any other team doesn’t matter who just as long as it’s not England seems a bit off to me. Especially as he loves living here and has a lot if family/friends here. I feel if I moved to another country I’d still support England but I’d definitely have an affinity with the country I’m living in.

No anger and aggression in all the footage around the world, where England fans were holidaying. Towns and villages had set up deckchairs for the fans to sit and watch on big screens. Where is your holiday?

Morocco. Everyone came together to watch Morocco v France the other night and it was a great party atmosphere. Last night was very different 🤷‍♀️.

You know its just a bit of a laugh and nobody actually believes that, dont you? You know most people watch england play with a tiny spark of hope buried under the overwhelming certainty that we are going to balls it....again?

That’s a brilliantly accurate description 😂😂

GingerAndTheBiscuits · Today 09:29

I really like this England team and manager which makes rooting for them quite easy. Much more likeable than some of the South American teams have been!

They're proud of their xenophobia. Xenophobes are dumb people who don't have anything else going for them. So they see their nationality as an achievement. (Where they were randomly born) and develop a hatred for people who were randomly born in another country. They make up any excuse for their xenophobia. It's pitiful and best to avoid where they congregate online.

KateSixer · Today 09:30

Bigtrapeze · Today 09:22

Me too, because most people are fabulous, warm welcoming folk, as are the majority of English people when travelling. In my experience being English doesn't amount to being treated unkindly at all but I do sometimes still feel a little apologetic when someone of the same nationality has chosen to go to a different country but then is openly disappointed at any differences between home and their new destination. To me, this is the point of travel but perhaps not to all, sadly. Other nationalities do definitely behave badly when travelling I am sure.

I do think it depends on, for want of a better word "class" though.

High spending educated cultured Brits are welcomed like anyone else. 100s of fans drinking huge numbers of pints boisterously in the sun, being shouty and loud, bantering amongst themselves (although these days mainly peaceful to locals) is such a different experience culturally in most parts of the world that many locals find it objectionable as it is so distanced from how they would behave themselves.

I suppose in some ways it does smack of colonialism a bit - ie bringing your culture and imposing it on where you are! Not sure that happens so much with other countries.

TBF it's the same in the cheaper holiday resorts and stag destinations.

That was on my list. Talking about xenophobia whilst being xenophobic. See @englandd you've got more of the platitudes to come yet. Enjoy.

From the majority of Europe it’s brexit- we look like uneducated nationalist plebs. Which is a fair assumption for those who voted for it.

BerryTwister · Today 09:32

@Poppingby because you’re using a lazy stereotype which is out of date. Every country has fans who get drunk and aggressive, but having been to numerous league and National matches, I have never witnessed English racists, but plenty of racists of other nationalities.

The thing is, you can afford to go all out on the humour when you actually stand zero chance of winning.
We do have a bit of humour about it (Three Lions song is tongue in cheek for example), but yeah, we stand a chance and so we are going to take it seriously.

You wouldnt expect France or Spain or Germany to be constantly all about the bantz would you?

Right. You might hate the answer or think it's unfair. But you can't possibly believe it's not a contributing factor to why people hate the idea of England winning the football world cup. Other countries' fans behaviour have literally nothing to do with it because you're taking about England (football team. I don't think of that as 'us' personally).
