Why does everyone hate us so much ?!

englandd · Today 08:52

I’m talking about being English, spent alot of time on the cesspit that is Reddit this World Cup and the vast majority absolutely hate England, I known it stems from the British empire but as far as I’m aware it wasn’t just England who were bad back then was it ? I mean Spain and Portugal took a big part in colonialism too but why is it just the English that gets the hate ?
Last night I would’ve been genuinely happy to support Norway if they went through, I can’t imagine hating another nation so badly. Maybe I shouldn’t take it personally 😆

Aibu ? Do we deserve the hate we get from something that happened hundreds of years ago ? For what it’s worth the British empire were ruthless and I don’t celebrate anything they did, but I also don’t think we should be punished still for something that happened so so long ago.

I am proud of England. We’re not the team we used to be, and I don’t think the fans are what they used to be either. As I said, I would’ve happily supported Norway if they went through, it’s a shame others can’t have the same mentality.

A lot of it is because most English people don’t really ever give a toss what other nations think. 🤷‍♀️

English people are arrogant in general!!

think the football team are great and deserve to be top even though they are rubbish!

go to other countries, expect people to speak English - why should we learn another language. But expect people to Speak English when there are here. Never embrace the culture. Only have to go on holiday to Spain and there’s English pubs everywhere serving English food for example.

the sub culture of drinking and being loud and obnoxious! Think 18-30 style holidays that were all over the TV showing vile behaviour and people still behaving like that.

On the plus side, we gave the world mumsnet. You gotta respect that.

Anyone but Scotland. Must remember to stop buying Scottish products if they hate us so much.

Yeah I don’t get this, didn’t they have a referendum of their own and vote to remain ? What’s that all about ?

I'm British (English accent so generally assumed to be English but born in Wales to Welsh parents) and my partner is English. We've travelled to dozens and dozens of countries and have never been made to feel unwelcome, In many places, people have wanted to engage in conversation to talk about England or to practice their English. I think the idea that everyone hates the English is greatly exaggerated.

But there is a grain of truth in the English abroad stereotype - whether that's football hooligans, working class people on holiday on the Costas who only want to eat English food or arrogant middle class gap year kids travelling around South East Asia. It's inevitable, that some people will have those stereotypes in mind when they come across English people.

As far as football is concerned, my dp is English and is a huge football fan but is always relieved when England get knocked out of international tournaments because then he can watch the remaining matches, knowing that the commentary will be about the game about to be played/being played rather than constantly going on about England which always pisses him off.

I'm indifferent to football myself and haven't watched any of the games but I did half heartedly wanted Norway to win last night because I'd liked the Viking photoshoot. That's how shallow I am!

Frumpitydoo · Today 09:41

Jealousy. That is all.

And I think what really annoys the Welsh and Scottish is that most English people couldn’t give a flying fuck that you don’t support us 😂🥳

That’s an interesting misconception…that does not annoy us one tiny little bit!

Poppingby · Today 09:41

englandd · Today 09:37

Well then surely that should extend to other countries possibly winning who also have thuggish fans ? My point is, why is it only the English ?

But why do you think it's only the English? Even on this thread people have slagged off other countries haven't they. You just see it 'cos you're looking for it.

summershere99 · Today 09:42

I’m English, I support England but…. there is a certain arrogance about English football and a sense of entitlement. We often think we are far better than we actually are, last nights game being a good example and how luck and Bellingham are the only reasons we’re through really. But the way the fans get on it’s like we’re better than everyone else and the trophy should be ours.

I mean we hate the French for similar reasons so… assuming they’re in the final and we’re not it’ll be anyone but France. Though to be fair they are incredibly good but also arrogant!

Sorry but you sound like you’re 12.

’But they’re rubbish’ well they’re clearly not, are they?!

Coolclouds · Today 09:42

I do not think it’s about history I think it’s about the behaviour of some football fans who take “celebrating” to another extreme. I have a grandparent who hated the French because of war related behaviour. I think it’s personal opinion as I do not hold the same views. I’m English dh is from the states and clearly doesn’t hate us.

The song, 'It's coming home' is a jokey, tongue-in-cheek song written by comedians. It's sung with hope with an element of humour behind it. People who don't get this are interpreting it wrongly.

As other PPs said, it's that the sarcasm is lost on some people. Don't take it so seriously - it's not the National Anthem!

Overtheatlantic · Today 09:43

I dislike the English because they actively dislike Americans. They also lack self awareness, much like the Americans.

Fair point.

German people as a rule are appalled & carry often a sense of national shame about Hitler & Nazi atrocities. Having spent time there, it was often a topic that simply could not be discussed.

Not all English people, of course, but many are wilfully ignorant of how England treated its colonies, including recent Anglo-Irish history. Frankly, many English people are woefully ignorant of how life outside England works - amazed Ireland doesn’t have an NHS model of care (eg regarding GP visits) or that we don’t have A-levels. I work with quite a number of English people - history curricula didn’t cover the Famine or Northern Ireland, for example.

TheGander · Today 09:44

England v Argentina is going to be interesting, a barometer of where sentiment re Britain is in Argentina currently. In the last World Cup in Mexico (1986) it would have been explosive, I hope now there will be a lot less rancour.

In fairness everyone dislikes the Americans. We have that in common. People hate us but they just cant stay away. We're like the ultimate toxic narc partner to them

Edited

Agreed.

All these posters saying, ‘oh it’s the arrogance’, ‘entitlement they think they’re going to win’ etc

Nonsense. I don’t think I know anyone who thinks we’re going to win it!

Insert any other ethnicity instead of English and you would be on racism charges.

I used to be very shocked by posts on here that so many had little understanding of the Troubles, now I’m used to it!

Jealousy. Everyone wants to be British and feels inferior because they aren't. We are the epitome of something or other. Even though we are pretty shit.

It’s these types of comments that make people dislike English tbh.
Also as a Scot we have to listen to English media and it’s not enjoyable if you’re not an England fan, also English media over the years has been so disrespectful about Scottish people. Also a lot of English people on holiday are loud and rude.
overall though most Scottish support the other team for a bit of fun and a joke.
I know lots of English people living here and they’re all lovely, it’s the press and the thugs that people don’t like

GreenMeeple · Today 09:46

They hate Argentina more than England. And the US gets the cake of being the most hated.
Ideally you ought to be a cuddly squeacky clean underdog to be liked. Which is ok.
Just hope England brings it home this time ❤️

This, OP if you spoke Spanish you would probably know that Argentina is the most hated team in the world cup. All of South America (except Argentina ofcource) will be supporting England.

crackofdoom · Today 09:46

Well, you're on an English speaking site.

If you were on a Spanish speaking site I suspect you might get a load of South Americans having a crack at Spain, similarly with French speaking sites and North African s 🤷‍♀️

bigfacthunter · Today 09:46

I’m Scottish and I’d say it’s mostly just a bit of a laugh, a jovial rivalry. I don’t think many people actually hate the English, certainly doesn’t filter down into any dislike towards of English people.

Id say a lot of other countries that hate England probably hate Scotland just as much and this is based on the feral nature of our tourists abroad. I think if you haven’t been to a lot of these nightlife spots in Spain/Portugal/Greece/Netherlands etc you’d find it hard to imagine how obnoxiously our people can behave on their holidays.
