Why does everyone hate us so much ?!

englandd · Today 08:52

I’m talking about being English, spent alot of time on the cesspit that is Reddit this World Cup and the vast majority absolutely hate England, I known it stems from the British empire but as far as I’m aware it wasn’t just England who were bad back then was it ? I mean Spain and Portugal took a big part in colonialism too but why is it just the English that gets the hate ?
Last night I would’ve been genuinely happy to support Norway if they went through, I can’t imagine hating another nation so badly. Maybe I shouldn’t take it personally 😆

Aibu ? Do we deserve the hate we get from something that happened hundreds of years ago ? For what it’s worth the British empire were ruthless and I don’t celebrate anything they did, but I also don’t think we should be punished still for something that happened so so long ago.

Is it a ‘small minority’? If so, it’s a loud, very visible one. That broadly isn’t seen from other countries.

You've obviously never watched racism in games of Eastern Europeans, its really bad. We have a Respect agenda getting rid of racism its dealt with, and has got massively better.

Ireland won its independence in 1919 (officially 1921). That’s not hundreds of years ago.

Also, if you read up on what happened during the famine, it was absolutely horrific. I doubt you’d be so flippant as to say Well, it was hundreds of years ago.

Foo2 · Today 09:20

We watched part of the game last night in the family bar on holiday and had to leave before the end. The aggression and hostility to anyone who "ain't English" was appalling. The poor hotel staff had to stop them attacking other guests more than once, and the racism and xenophobia on display wasn't pretty - and nothing to do with the actual football.
Pretty appalling to witness.

Why would English fans behave like that when we played well? Nice story though.

Do you know this for a fact? I can speak several languages well enough to know that each and every one contains irony and sarcasm.🤔

I would say the "hate", such as it is, is largely due to poorly behaved Brits abroad, and the classic British arrogance. Not dissimilar to the US arrogance in thinking they're the only country where you can be free and be a success.

I travel a lot and I'd say that as a generalisation when speaking English as a non first language a lot of people - understandably - struggle with these things.

I am not saying that those concepts do not exist in other languages. They do!

But the subtly of things like "it's coming home" being (originally at least) an ironic joke against ourselves and a comment on repetitive failure rather than an arrogant outright boast is often lost I think.

ShouldKnowBetterButNeverLearn · Today 09:22

In Scotland, we are constantly bombarded by the media about the England football team. How they are going to win, 1966 is brought up every 5 minutes, the arrogance of assuming England are going to win. it's relentless.
I've been watching most of the World Cup games, even during non England games, the commentators still bring up the England team, the players etc even though it's got nothing to do with the current match!
England last won the world cup 60 years ago but it's still assumed they will win every time.
I was supporting Norway last night, they started off really well.
Just to say I have English family, friends and colleagues so it's not personal, the media definitely fuels it all.

@MaggieBsBoat ”England fans behaviour is in large part loathsome, so they loathe the English.”

I’ve been all over Europe and never been loathed, quite the opposite.
People can separate the drunken dickheads from the rest of the population.

Me too, because most people are fabulous, warm welcoming folk, as are the majority of English people when travelling. In my experience being English doesn't amount to being treated unkindly at all but I do sometimes still feel a little apologetic when someone of the same nationality has chosen to go to a different country but then is openly disappointed at any differences between home and their new destination. To me, this is the point of travel but perhaps not to all, sadly. Other nationalities do definitely behave badly when travelling I am sure.

Not true.

Serbia, Croatia, Hungary to name a couple.

The biggest critics know nothing of the football world.

2chocolateoranges · Today 09:23

I would say we don’t hate the English but the British media who are mainly English who talk about 1966 as if it was last year, coming home, three lions song, all we heard on commentary last night and every game is we, we , we, we. A lot of people watching last night are not England fans and should have neutral commentators. Also an independent referee was discussing the penalty given saying it wasn’t a penalty due to the position of the leg and 15 minutes later and the commentator was still disagreeing with her saying England deserved it. I think for me mainly it’s the entitlement that they should be winning every game.

Andy Murray was always British when he won but Scottish if he lost. Same with Sir Chris Hoy.

also dislike that people say if you live in the UK you should be supporting the home nations, never going to happen. Our team is Glasgow rangers, we aren’t going to support Celtic in any game , no Manchester City fan would support Manchester United and no Newcastle United fan will support Sunderland. It’s just not going to happen.

Exactly what I was wondering! Would have hated to see them lose. So angry and aggressive

Muffsies · Today 09:23

Im not sure it is because of the British empire. It’s because some British people behave appallingly when they go to other places. My dad follows England home and away, he manages not to get blind drink, insult people wherever he goes or fight. Although this World Cup has been extortionate and terrible for the environment he has had a great time as the coked up knob heads that often go to England games are not there (I’m not going to call them fans as that is offensive to the rest of us who are decent human beings). I assume these people are priced out.

I agree that we have a well deserved football hooligan reputation, and there's a significant proportion among the supporters who are still proud to uphold that 'tradition'. There is always a jingoistic, anti-foreigner element (and outright racisim), is it any surprise that this gets a negative response?

I would support england myself if it weren't for the appaling, offensive behaviour of many of the fans.

BerryTwister · Today 09:23

Poppingby · Today 09:00

Because many English football fans are racist thugs who have typically misbehaved in other people's countries probably.

@Poppingby is this a joke? Some other country’s fans make monkey noises and throw bananas on the pitch when black players come on.

I live in Europe. I am answering the question about why people hate the English football fans. People who don’t, don’t. I am talking about those that do. Obviously. That. Is. Not. Everyone.

That works both ways though doesnt it? Annie Lennox is Scottish but the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and countless others are never English, they're British...

Radrover · Today 09:25

My husband is English, I‘m Irish. We travel a lot. We’re always surprised (well getting less surprised!) at the reaction we get asked about our nationalities, people immediately speak to me and ask me about Ireland-he gets ignored. Even in India where they do seem to love the English despite historical events, they always had a more enthusiastic reaction when I told them I was Irish.

potterspot · Today 09:25

Reddit is full of Americans, they think we look down on them & are superior, many English people do think this.

SmeorgeGeliot · Today 09:25

SuddenLightbulb · Today 09:05

I don’t in the least hate England, where I lived for years, or have any particular feelings about who wins a football match, but your colonial history is very confused, OP. Bloody Sunday happened within my lifetime, English soldiers shot and killed unarmed civilians, and the Widgery Tribunal was a whitewash. It took till 2010 to have the shootings termed ‘unjustifiable’ and for David Cameron to officially apologise, and only last year was one soldier brought to trial and found not guilty, because the two soldiers testifying against him had previously committed perjury, making them unreliable witnesses. Throughout the Troubles, which ended only in 1998 with the GFA, the British state colluded with loyalist paramilitaries. Colonialism isn’t something from the Age of Exploration.

This needs highlighting for the people too young to know about it, or who have forgotten.

Unarmed. Shot dead. 1972.

My point is the holocaust is even more recent than Irish independence and yet nobody is sitting around booing the German team because of it. Because that would be pathetic.

No anger and aggression in all the footage around the world, where England fans were holidaying. Towns and villages had set up deckchairs for the fans to sit and watch on big screens. Where is your holiday?

TheWonderhorse · Today 09:26

It's national sport! It's by definition a bit xenophobic otherwise nobody would care who won 🤣

In all seriousness, anglocentrism is annoying. I would imagine most English people don't even notice the discrepancy in reporting and the air of superiority which permeates sports coverage. The other nations do. It comes across as arrogant. We are more sensitive to this stuff because of cultural history too though I think.

I'm Welsh. We supported Scotland and now whoever England are playing.

You know its just a bit of a laugh and nobody actually believes that, dont you? You know most people watch england play with a tiny spark of hope buried under the overwhelming certainty that we are going to balls it....again?

Haha! This is soooooo true! Our belief that England will bring it home is based on nothing but wild optimism and decades of crushed hope 😂
