Why does everyone hate us so much ?!

englandd · Yesterday 08:52

I’m talking about being English, spent alot of time on the cesspit that is Reddit this World Cup and the vast majority absolutely hate England, I known it stems from the British empire but as far as I’m aware it wasn’t just England who were bad back then was it ? I mean Spain and Portugal took a big part in colonialism too but why is it just the English that gets the hate ?
Last night I would’ve been genuinely happy to support Norway if they went through, I can’t imagine hating another nation so badly. Maybe I shouldn’t take it personally 😆

Aibu ? Do we deserve the hate we get from something that happened hundreds of years ago ? For what it’s worth the British empire were ruthless and I don’t celebrate anything they did, but I also don’t think we should be punished still for something that happened so so long ago.

Scottish here
C,mon England, please don't lose against Argentina 🙏

Its nothing to do with empire because as you point out loads of countries had them and scotland was very willingly involved in the British one. Its not like everyone hates Germany because nazis.

Its because we're awesome and consistently go our own way, and it doesnt matter what kind of hate we get, we just dont give a fuck. Im guessing from the outside it must be infuriating to watch how nothing ever dampens our self love, but what can we do! People dont like france for the same reason

Yep it’s this. These comments are full of people saying “oh we’re just always the best” “people are jealous” “they just want to root for the underdog.”

How does winning the World Cup 60 years ago make you so obviously better than everyone else that everyone is mean and jealous.

its just really funny when the big shiny pedestal you make crumbles and falls. It’s hubris, and it’s satisfying as hell

Don't be obtuse. 🙄

It not obtuse though is it? You have no idea how much the Congolese hate the Belgians or the Sudanese hate the French. You have no exposure to it so you have assumed it doesn’t happen. It’s so small minded

You ok hun?

MrsFrumble · Yesterday 17:45

Some people don’t have a strong grasp of history. I saw a post on another social media platform just after the Mexico vs England match, expressing dismay that England had won and that they hated “coloniser nations”, then saying that they would be supporting Belgium against the USA 🙄

I also think that, as always, social media doesn’t really reflect real life. As a Brit living in the US, I’ve honestly never encountered anything but friendly interest. I work in a public facing job, and as soon as people hear my English accent I’m usually regaled with stories of delightful visits to London, British ancestors, time spent serving on British airforce bases and Bridgerton/Downton Abbey/whichever British TV show is popular at the time. People can bitch all they like on the internet, but as long as they’re civil
to my face I don’t really care.

Interesting how "Sigh." always seems to appear right after someone mistakes disagreement for misunderstanding.

No, just denotes boredom at the crappy level of debate to be honest.

Ah I hope you don’t live in England.

Goditsmemargaret · Yesterday 17:46

It's really weird to me honestly how English people deny how badly behaved many of them are abroad and how we instinctively know what to look out for and avoid.

I guess it's just that we all think our environment is the standard and that's where the "there's good and bad everywhere" attitude comes from.

I suppose it's the same as when as an Irish person out in the working world overseas people started making comments about Irish people and drinking. Initially I was irritated thinking how dare they, I'm not even a big drinker. I was out with a group of Brazilians in a nightclub. They had one drink for the whole night. Of course comparatively I was an utter lush.

It’s the jingoistic way you all bang on about it “coming home”, like England has the absolutely right to win everything - and how incredibly unbearable you will all be if you actually win.

it gives me the shivers.

come on Argentina!

Have you listened to the actual song they’re singing? It’s about keeping a flame of hope alive despite endless disappointment

Oh please. We're the world's whipping boy when it comes to colonialism. In fact it's all the rage...especially among academics/uni students and the 'glitterati'.

I don’t think people deny it, it’s just frustrating when people make statements like ‘how English people’ what all of them?!

Plus, are we the only nation with some thuggish lousy people as football fans- I certainly think not!

Also, I think there’s an element of I’m English, I’ll speak bad about England, but you’re not English, you best not.

But football hooliganism originated in England and still exists yoga certainly extent. They just have a bad reputation because of that and Brits abroad generally.

I bet if you think really hard you’ll be able to work out why football hooliganism ‘originated’ in England.

When you’ve done that you can take a look at hooliganism in South America and in other parts of Europe.

Wwll there been some obnoxius comments from
Scottish and Irish posters too.

Well you never get a post from an Irish, Welsh or Scottish person wondering why 'everyone hates them so much'.

Im Irish. Its more just a laugh for us to always be against the English team, and for whomever is playing them 🤣

No, football general violence was present in all countries from the birth of the game in each country including Britain. And given it started in Britain, this means if you want to be pedantic football violence (fights starting spontaneously due to results or rivalry) had to start there by default considering that reality.

But for organised "hooliganism", most of the world predates British hooliganism. In many areas by a very, very long time.

But don't let that get in the way of your ignorance and agenda.

But those events happened,
Why am I not allowed to stick up for my country, when the Scots are being so anti English?
Watch Wimbledon and please point out the hooligans.
Because I know a few there, who were also at the football. They will be gorgeously dressed, good looking and very well groomed.

You can and I applaud you for it. But you can do it without slagging other UK nations off surely?

TorroFerney · Yesterday 17:55

I think the English are also seen as snobs, and Brexit didn't help in that regard!

Really - I think we are seen as rough abroad, not snobs. But also Reddit isn't representative of anything. I've never had anything other than friendliness when abroad, but I am not wearing a football top and shouting. I have never thought I am unwelcome here as I am a Brit. Well I tell a lie, felt very unwelcome/not quite safe in a cafe near a mosque in Malaysia - maybe the blue mosque but this was an area outside KL where it was very traditional, no women working in the cafe and I think the staff didn't like westerners full stop. So that was religion, well assumed religion.

I don't drink at all anymore so there you go.

Listen you can work yourself up into whatever level of defensive vitriol you like but the fact remains - the reason the English are unpopular GENERALLY is because you don't do yourselves any favours en masse. It's not some big conspiracy against you. It's that a large cohort behave in an unpleasant way.

If you want a side by side example look at any TV show with the same format but has an English and Irish version; eg. First Dates or Come Dine With Me. You can spot the differences a mile off in how they treat their counterparts. Or even this forum...

To be honest, the Scots made a huge impression on the people of the US, particularly Boston, where they drank the city dry, put cones on all the statues, marched around en masse in kilts, sang their way through nine innings of a baseball game, serenaded their neighbours with bagpipes at the crack of silly o'clock, and made friends left, right, and centre. The Mayor of Boston has started the process of twinning with Glasgow.

I was referring to the imaginary Scots in Lanzarote which @CovenOfCheeses was on about when they were having a good go at slagging off the English.

Probably becsuse they never do very well in the world cup?
And its all daft anyway the four nations are so close together there will have been lots of movement across them over the centuaries
With lots of us sharing heritage
