Why does everyone hate us so much ?!

I’m talking about being English, spent alot of time on the cesspit that is Reddit this World Cup and the vast majority absolutely hate England, I known it stems from the British empire but as far as I’m aware it wasn’t just England who were bad back then was it ? I mean Spain and Portugal took a big part in colonialism too but why is it just the English that gets the hate ?
Last night I would’ve been genuinely happy to support Norway if they went through, I can’t imagine hating another nation so badly. Maybe I shouldn’t take it personally 😆

Aibu ? Do we deserve the hate we get from something that happened hundreds of years ago ? For what it’s worth the British empire were ruthless and I don’t celebrate anything they did, but I also don’t think we should be punished still for something that happened so so long ago.

God not this again. People don’t like the English football team it’s as simply as that. The fact you can’t get your head around that baffles me 🙄

What an insightful and helpful contribution (!)

I saw the match in Lanzarote. The oafish drunken louts who scream xenophobic and racist nonsense during the match, tried to start fights with Irish and Scottish people walking past who were not wearing England shirts and their general demeanour alongside the way they spoke to their pink or red overweight dyed blond partners in such an aggressive and demeaning sexist manner made me ashamed to be British. I speak fluent Spanish and usually avoid British places but could understand why the locals do not like the British (but ventured to a pub as was curious about the match and didn’t have a TV at my house) who seem to have a sense of entitlement. I was shocked on holiday to see rude British people who just wanted English food and cheap beer in the sun while complaining loudly about foreigners.

So they only wanted to start fights with the lovely, sober, placid Scots and the Irish while shouting at their pink or red, overweight dyed blonde partners. No judgement from you then. Jeez.

Also quite amazing that in their drunken state they could recognise who was Irish and Scottish just by them walking past!

Also want to say British have so much self hate, they think they are being fair but if you don’t like yourself, no one is going to like you.

On the contrary, Germans are respected.

😂I can spot Germans a mile off in the tourist place I live in a European country, respect is not what I have for them. Lots have no regard for others, push pass others in the supermarket, bad manners etc, I honestly see only politeness from Brits, even big groups of young lads are generally brilliant

I’m Irish and absolutely don’t lean into the anti-English rhetoric or refusal to support England, ever but there is an underlying antipathy to England that is linked to the British colonial past, which for some countries, eg Ireland, is certainly not far in the past, and the consequences of which are still felt.

However, as well as the pathetic anti-English chants & behaviour that a small minority display here, there’s a broad interest in England and their results, even if not fully supportive.

Regarding football, specifically though, the English fans (not every fan, but many of them) are the issue; ‘football’s coming home’ , the demeanour, jingoistic attitudes, drinking - English fans do not serve England well.

That's just all nonsense though isn't it?

Coming home is just the catchy chant from a song that is a lament about English failure. And everything else is either done equally like support and belief and reactions in press, or for fan behaviour for a very (very) long time England has been the or close to the best at every tournament, over and over so most countries are worse.

notantordec · Yesterday 16:38

@HammyHocky fine I will bite.

Your fans and the England centric press are obnoxious for example your fans singing that a Scottish player is a sex offender (when he isn’t maybe your fans should look closer to home) and the commentators constantly banging on about 1966,

You seem to enter every competition with the boring “it’s coming home” nonsense (it wasn’t even invited in England so it can’t come home)

When your team inevitably loses and gets put out a section of your fans turn racist and blame it on the non white players.

These are just a few of the reasons why no one likes your team.

AgentJohnson · Yesterday 16:39

Perhaps you don’t see the hate towards other colonists is because the hate isn’t being posted in English. Secondly, as you acknowledge, Reddit isn’t the home of balanced intellectual musings. I live in the Netherlands and I definitely benefit from the love the average Dutch person has of the English.

You know that a lot of these "gammony, uneducated, frothing at the mouth, chip-eating, pissed up twats" on cheap holidays could be from Germany, Holland, France and pretty much every other European country? This underclass is not exclusive to the UK.

I would suggest paying a bit more money and avoiding all inclusive resorts. Or better still, stop being so fucking snobby.

I'd recommend being honest about the fact that many Brits abroad are an absolute embarrassment to the country and do not go unnoticed by locals.

There are plenty of stereotypes about particularly German tourists - why not us?

Are we too good to be called out on our issues?

Most of the people on Reddit are American and there seems to be an assumption that the English see the USA as a former colony. This is odd to the English because we don’t. But that’s where the resentment comes from, I think.

To a large extent, the British assumption of Britain's role in the 'Special Relationship' is that the wise British are tutors to the young whippersnappers across the pond, as the Greeks fancied they were to the Romans, the old empire training the new one. Iirc, it was Harold Mcmillan who stated this explicitly.

Needless to say, this belief is considered by the Americans to be a ridiculous piece of self-indulgence. This view was articulated by Secretary of State Dean Acheson.

Agree completely with this.

BadPennyReturns · Yesterday 16:43

Most English people will laugh it off anyway as we are tolerant of others. Who cares what they think, just smile and nod and say okey-dokey.

We've all witnessed bad behaviour from other English people, but hey guess what, other nations are often worse, it is not an English disease, behaving badly.

Look at the rioting in London after the Morocco match - wasnt the English tearing up our own streets.

Some of the worst rioting I have witnessed has been in Ireland. And let's not mention the French, shall we!!

England have made the semis and it's given folk slapped arse faces. Never mind...come on England 😀

It’s the jingoistic way you all bang on about it “coming home”, like England has the absolutely right to win everything - and how incredibly unbearable you will all be if you actually win.

it gives me the shivers.

come on Argentina!

Oh ffs, that song is about football coming home, not the trophy. It’s about the sport itself coming home to the country in which it originated. The song was about a football tournament (Euro 96) being played in England. The lyric is “football’s coming home,” not “we’re so great at football and the trophy is as good as ours”🙄

I have no idea what you are referring to with regards to the Scottish player, but again, it is interesting to me that you are yet another person who has overlooked the Norwegian player who admitted his guilt at sharing child sex abuse material, but okay, be cross with us about a chant. There are sadly a lot of bad men in football, and also in rugby, basketball, baseball and all other worldwide sports. Not strictly English players. We also have the lovely Jude Bellingham who got into trouble for rightly calling out another player who is a rapist but let’s overlook that too, eh.

The song has been explained 1000 times on here. Look at who wrote it. Read the lyrics. It isn’t pompous.

Again, yes we have some bad fans. That isn’t the teams fault so why you are cross with them for a few bad fans I have no idea. However, and maybe this is whataboutism, lots of other countries have fans who behave badly, get drunk and are racist. Why are you solely pointing fingers at us? Why not Spain? Mexico? Football is a problematic sport that attracts a lot of racism and aggression. That isn’t just in England, it’s a worldwide problem.

Sorry but your issue is with football fans (and the media), not the England team who have done none of the things you wrote about, and your problem should be with ALL badly behaved football fans, not all English fans.

It’s also interesting that you said ‘your team’ without asking if support England, but sure. You have a chip in your shoulder and you should look into it, because your anger is hugely misdirected.

Also, it’s quite arrogant of you to say ‘no one likes your team’ as this is not true and lots of people around the world have said they are now supporting England.

BackToLurk · Yesterday 16:51

TBH, given the diversity of the England team, I just assume the haters are just massive racists.

Dideon · Yesterday 16:52

SuddenLightbulb · Yesterday 15:22

That’s certainly true — reading Mn, you would think the UK was enduring some kind of end of days dystopian nightmare and failed state, rather than being a perfectly nice country/group of countries with an astonishing literary tradition (and the world’s best capital in London), albeit currently going through a bit of a dip.

The ‘sudden emigration’ threads of late on here blow my mind. Not ‘I’m dying to go and live in Country X because I’ve spent time there, speak the language and think it’s somewhere I could be happy’, but ‘This country is shit and a failed state — what other country will let me in?’

Most of the people wittering on like this are going nowhere and have little knowledge of the socio-economic landscape of other countries. Of those who do emigrate to another country (with absolutely no insight), many wait in bars to tell you how they love their new life (up a hill in a dying village with constant power cuts) and would never go back to the Uk.In reality they can’t because they have spent their money on private doctors.

That aside, back to the OP’s question

People are going to hate on England because it’s the thing to do rather than any valid reason. I pity the ones who live here but are ABE. That’s just silly !
I’m English with a lot of Irish ancestors (like many English) My family were poor in all directions. Miners, farm hands , steelworkers and workhouse inmates. I and my lot hold no responsibility for the empire. The poor people of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales were all used. 1 in 5 of my town at the turn of the 20 the century were from Ireland.
So if your sitting in Ireland or Wales or Scotland hating all English people due to historical reasons well your not a big thinker or you ?

If your going to spout hate ar least listen to the lyrics of its coming home 🙄🙄

XelaM · Yesterday 16:55

So people on this thread who (ridiculously) have something against the humorous and self-deprecating "It's coming Home" lyrics, have you no problem with Argentina's chants? About how their cup was stolen from Maradona in 1994 and that they are going to get that 4th star for Falklands, Diego etc. They also had their players dance and chant against Brazil in Rio making fun of them?

notantordec · Yesterday 16:56

@HammyHocky Yip I am just an angry jock 🙄. It’s funny how Wales, Scotland or Northen Ireland don’t seem to have this “why won’t you support us” complex.

godlikeAI · Yesterday 17:00

I’d estimate that about half of English people are of the “thick and proud of it” variety. They do us no favours in demonstrating what our country is about. I am on holiday there is no other nation with so many giant, red, tattooed drinkers walking around like they own the place.

So, if people look at that and make their judgements, we shouldn’t be too surprised

Dappy777 · Yesterday 17:01

I wouldn’t say that a bunch of football fans on Reddit is a good sample of ‘the world’. Does everyone hate us? Hasn’t been my experience. I suspect the vast majority of those comments are from Scottish and Irish football fans, plus a few Argentineans with a thing about the Falklands War. In my experience, most other nations don’t really think about us at all, any more than we think about them. I don’t think Dutch people hate us, or Turkish people or Koreans or Mexicans. Nor do intelligent, civilised Argentinians, the majority of whom see the Falklands War as a tragedy started by a dictator hoping to prop up his regime.

Also, football brings out the worst in people. This is why I f-ing hate the World Cup and can’t wait for it to be over. It dredges up the nastiest, crudest, ugliest kind of nationalism.
