Why does everyone hate us so much ?!

englandd · Yesterday 08:52

I’m talking about being English, spent alot of time on the cesspit that is Reddit this World Cup and the vast majority absolutely hate England, I known it stems from the British empire but as far as I’m aware it wasn’t just England who were bad back then was it ? I mean Spain and Portugal took a big part in colonialism too but why is it just the English that gets the hate ?
Last night I would’ve been genuinely happy to support Norway if they went through, I can’t imagine hating another nation so badly. Maybe I shouldn’t take it personally 😆

Aibu ? Do we deserve the hate we get from something that happened hundreds of years ago ? For what it’s worth the British empire were ruthless and I don’t celebrate anything they did, but I also don’t think we should be punished still for something that happened so so long ago.

@HammyHocky Yip I am just an angry jock 🙄. It’s funny how Wales, Scotland or Northen Ireland don’t seem to have this “why won’t you support us” complex.

So You aren’t going to respond to anything I have actually said? And I don’t know why you are making sarcastic faces at me, you have no idea who I support or my ancestry, lots of assumptions from you.

And that is probably because none of the other British countries received the same hatred as England. No one is saying all the things you said about Wales and blaming the Welsh team. However, my husband who supports England also supported Scotland, and would have supported Wales and Ireland had they qualified. He also supports them during the rugby too and any golfers who qualify for tournaments.

Also, this thread wasn’t about supporting during football, if you read OPs posts it’s about other people hating on England which extends way past football and we all know that to be true.

Probably because it’s a moot point as you rarely get past the group stages.

I’d estimate that about half of English people are of the “thick and proud of it” variety. They do us no favours in demonstrating what our country is about. I am on holiday there is no other nation with so many giant, red, tattooed drinkers walking around like they own the place.

So, if people look at that and make their judgements, we shouldn’t be too surprised

How very xenophobic. Half of English people are thick and proud of it? Speak for yourself!

Goldenbear · Yesterday 17:07

@HammyHocky fine I will bite.

Your fans and the England centric press are obnoxious for example your fans singing that a Scottish player is a sex offender (when he isn’t maybe your fans should look closer to home) and the commentators constantly banging on about 1966,

You seem to enter every competition with the boring “it’s coming home” nonsense (it wasn’t even invited in England so it can’t come home)

When your team inevitably loses and gets put out a section of your fans turn racist and blame it on the non white players.

These are just a few of the reasons why no one likes your team.

It was invented in England, it's disputed by one person that doesn't make it fact.

So they only wanted to start fights with the lovely, sober, placid Scots and the Irish while shouting at their pink or red, overweight dyed blonde partners. No judgement from you then. Jeez.

To be honest, the Scots made a huge impression on the people of the US, particularly Boston, where they drank the city dry, put cones on all the statues, marched around en masse in kilts, sang their way through nine innings of a baseball game, serenaded their neighbours with bagpipes at the crack of silly o'clock, and made friends left, right, and centre. The Mayor of Boston has started the process of twinning with Glasgow.

Where the heck are you holidaying? Speak for yourself.

TBH, given the diversity of the England team, I just assume the haters are just massive racists.

I agree. How diverse is the Scottish team.

LightningTree · Yesterday 17:11

Let’s not forget that we were colonised by the French. They have kindly sent over the Bayeux Tapestry to remind us. Oh, and the Romans. And the Vikings behaved appallingly Smile.

hay5689 · Yesterday 17:11

I don’t think it’s everyone that hates the English. I think it’s Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland and we don’t hate the English people we hate the English media for making us endure the endless team talk, even on nights that England are not playing.

I’d assume a team is picked on their capabilities, not their skin colour 🤦‍♀️

So based on your anecdoral exoeeience of English people holidaying in some random Holiday destination you have deduced
Half of English people are thick and proud?
That doesnt make you sound all that bright yourself

Why do you think everyone hates the English in the first place?

I am Dutch and I can assure you we do not really think about you very much at all.

I think this is the crux, really.

Nobody except the English gives the English all
that much thought.

But here we are on a thread where England is positioned as the victim, with every possible answer to the OP’s question deflected away as racism or hatred or xenophobia or lack of understanding of your ‘famous’ 🤨 sense of humour.

Not one iota of self-awareness or insight or ‘huh, I never thought of that’.

Goldenbear · Yesterday 17:14

notantordec · Yesterday 16:25

God not this again. People don’t like the English football team it’s as simply as that. The fact you can’t get your head around that baffles me 🙄

Who doesn't? Honestly, you're talking out of your arse. You should correct that you don't like the English team.

Ted27 · Yesterday 17:15

@englandd

Point of information

The British Empire was not hundreds of years ago.
I think the last colony to be given independence was Zimbabwe in 1980.
Most gained independence in the post WW2 period

EssCarGo · Yesterday 17:15

Goldenbear · Yesterday 17:11

Maybe a country 10% of the size of England just doesn’t have quite the diversity of population 🤷‍♀️

No one thinks about England at all, yet here we are on a 36 page thread discussing everything that’s bad about us. Including getting sunburnt and some song lyrics.

Then irony. And yes it was invented and codified in England, there is zero question about this.

Not every single ball game was, but nobody other than obnoxious prats trying to twist a fallacious excuse to complain suggest that is thr case.

English press talk about and focus on England, what a shock. You should read the European countries that are in their native languages, rarely any different at all.

Racists exist in all countries, focusing on unfortunate racists who are a minority when most of world football has vastly worse major racism problems across those countries is scraping the barrel.

Not naming the player makes it difficult, when most examples of that chant are about people who did do something.

It's a helpful comment though, shows the answer is that there is no reason, just made up narratives people use to justify hatred because that is who they are and want to be.

I remember when the Scots came to Paris in 98 when I was living there at the time, the year France won it and everyone loved them. When they were asked to lift their kilts they obliged!

Leopardprintbikini · Yesterday 17:25

In my very humble opinion it’s not colonisation. It’s the human instinct to support the underdog and root for the unlikely winner. And in many football competitions national confidence in the English side ‘bringing it home’ etc rubs people up the wrong way.

That song isn't about confidence at all. It's about knowing we're only going to go so far without winning, and that it's nice to dream that we will. You can tell you've only ever listened to the chorus.

You should really question if you are choosing the right holiday destination, if that is what you are seeing, because I can tell you honestly, that over the past thirty five years my wife and I have been going on holiday, we haven't seen these red tattooed English people wandering around arrogantly. Mind you, I suppose that is because we don't do package holidays or go to European beach resorts like Magaluf or Ibiza, we tend to go to Burgundy, Cannes, Nice, Salzburg, Vienna, Colmar or Brittany, which strangely seem to be devoid of hordes of drunken, rude, arrogant Engerlanders. I wonder why that is?
