New DP overreacting?!!

I grew up with two brothers and have had a few ex’s, all were not shy at all about breaking wind around me. New DP - together about 2 months. I decided I wasn’t going to keep holding it in for ever so let one go in bed last night. He shot up, said how disgusted he was and that women don’t do that and if I did it again he’d dump me?! Is it me or are men absolute hypocrites when it comes to this 😂

I have been with my DH for almost 30 years and we have only ever accidentally broken wind in front of each other never purposely. It’s disgusting and he’s right.

You don’t sound very compatible. Some couples would be relaxed about witnessing bodily functions in front of each other, some prefer to retain a bit of “mystery” (not quite the right word but I can’t think of another). I think the mystery is gone now! I’d break up with him as his reaction is as unpleasant as the fart.

I feel like mumsnet is in another dimension sometimes. Farting is normal, thank fuck I don't live with any of you who are clutching their pearls at breaking wind cos I'd blow you right out of the window 💨💨💨💨 😂

One of the best I read was that it’d be the end of the relationship for them 😆

I don’t do it. I wouldn’t like it. But fucking hell!

ShineBlueSky · 04/07/2026 15:33

Well yes, it is a natural body function, but then so is shitting, and you wouldn't just drop that where the urge struck, would you?

On second thought, don't answer that...

It's piggish, period.

nooneliterallyspatouttheirtea · 04/07/2026 15:35

How can farting be deliberate? Do you just push and cross your fingers? Or the other way round, perhaps?

Well there is a major difference in that a fart doesn't leave anything physical behind. I wouldn't just shit anywhere, no, because I don't like littering apart from anything else! Let's be honest, a fart and a shit are completely different things.

I feel like this is similar to an old flatemate I had. On nights when her boyfriend was staying she would make sure she stayed awake until he had droppped off before she would remove her make up. She'd then set an alarm to go off discreetly under her pillow so she could get up, creep into the bathroom and do her make up and then get back to bed so when she woke up he wouldn't ever see her barefaced. I simply wouldn't have the energy for that, not would I like to feel I have to hide those parts of myself that maybe aren't perfect from the person I should be most relaxed around.

Because I grew up in a very repressed household and was taught to be ashamed of all natural bodily functions, I remember in my first relationships I couldn't cope with the idea of pooing in an ensuite in case he could hear or smell it and realise what I was doing. I made myself really very uncomfortable holding it in for far too when there wasn't always an easy alternative to using the ensuite. Also having to come up with creative excuses to leave if couldn't find somewhere to shit without him realising what I was doing. Fucking ridiculous. Thank God I was able to grow up and shake off those shackles, partly thanks to meeting current husband with whom I can be natural in my own home, as it should be!

20 years in and we still don't do it in front of each other on purpose.

Yeah, sometimes one slips out but if you know you've got one brewing it's really not hard to leave the room for a second.

It could be. After major abdominal surgery in when I had issues with wind ( apparently not uncommon).

It was difficult to get up and moving quickly so yeah was pretty difficult to just " pop out of the room a second" every time I felt gas brewing

Well yeah, I'd say thats a special circumstance.

I'm not saying that we'll never get to a point where we end up breaking wind in front of one another. I'd just prefer to keep the mystery alive for as long as possible!

100% We also say, 'marrow' immediately afterwards as a tribute to Victoria Wood.

ohyesido · 04/07/2026 19:30

Everyone does it. It’s painful to hold it in, two people who are comfortable with each other don’t hold it against each other.

BUT forced farting is annoying and completely separate from letting it go discreetly.

intolerance farts are unholy and shouldn’t be inflicted on those we love.

preaching at someone and humiliating them for doing something natural is a sign of something wrong

No-one would die if you came out of the loo straight after pooing and wiped your arse in public so you didn’t miss what was happening on the tv. Would you do that? If not, "chill the fuck out"!

😂

99% of the time, it really isn't "painful" to hold it in. Slightly uncomfortable maybe. If it's actually painful, you need to see the GP.

Mmmm19 · 04/07/2026 20:16

I think this is massively individual / how you were brought up. My parents never did this - I never have on person, the odd time by accident. My OH does and I don’t like it. Not all men I’ve lived with or dated do this. I guess neither of you are wrong. But your partners reaction was ott
