New DP overreacting?!!

Nettlesal · 03/07/2026 20:26

I grew up with two brothers and have had a few ex’s, all were not shy at all about breaking wind around me. New DP - together about 2 months. I decided I wasn’t going to keep holding it in for ever so let one go in bed last night. He shot up, said how disgusted he was and that women don’t do that and if I did it again he’d dump me?! Is it me or are men absolute hypocrites when it comes to this 😂

I don't know if I am weirdo. I don't fart deliberately in the company of other people indoors, not even my parents wife or children. However I do not also go to the toilet to fart. I just do it where it won't disturb someone else - if there is no one around, or in a different part of the house or outside etc. I have never found this onerous or a major inconvenience, with the possible exception of on an aeroplane where the pressure difference does things. I think people who openly and proudly fart in front of other people indoors are uncouth cunts. Irrelevant whether it is a man or woman.

Bit of a strong reaction 😳

Balloonhearts · 04/07/2026 10:27

God. He's not one to have in the delivery room, put it that way. Ditch him.

HelpMeGetThrough · 04/07/2026 10:29

Ah, the regular fart thread, where the majority are “offended” by a bodily function.

Nothing wrong with lifting the sheets OP.

Namechangeforthisdilemma1 · 04/07/2026 10:29

Not a DP, it’s only two months

His reaction is poor. Regardless of whether he agrees with farting or not, the ultimatum is controlling. He could have just said to you that he prefers you not to fart around him

JustAboutHangingInThere · 04/07/2026 10:29

Shameful, disgusting, disrespectful…..bloody hell….over a fart.

Someone who threatens to dump you, for any perceived misdemeanour, isn’t a keeper.

Well…

Obviously men and women shouldn’t be held to different standards. And everyone accidentally farts “outloud from time to time” - the correct the to do is apologise if you do.

Deliberately farting in front of others is disgusting though, and disrespectful to the other person. It’s very easy to leave the room if you know you want to fart. And “forcing” out a fart is extra disgusting.

I voted YANBU due to the double standards but of course everyone should have some standards here.

I wouldn’t stand for the ultimatum though- “I’ll dump you if…” For that he’d be shown the door tbh

Really. If I feel one brewing, I can squeeze hard and make sure it's silent. If I got up to leave the room, it would (and has) escape noisily.

DH was present when I birthed his children, we are comfortable with each other and freely fart. They also escape DH when he turns over in his sleep.

I found that when I gave up wheat, I farted far less, far far less.

Yeah on reflection maybe a bit strong but I just came from a work site where they were basically having a farting competition after being on the beers all night yesterday.

Farts are funny, sorry

They are. There wouldn’t be so many videos of dogs, horses and other animals farting on YouTube if they weren’t funny.

Good for them

This has had me crying with laughter this morning, thanks everyone. If my DH or I had to leave the room every time we’d be in and out like yo-yos and it would take twice as long to watch a film - the side effects of a high fibre diet obviously! P.S. we have a combined age of 121 and still find it hilarious….

Yep, same here, loud and proud farters who find it funny. Sometimes if we’ve done a particularly hazardous one we invite the other to “drink that through your eyeballs”. It’s a great compatibility test as I couldn’t be doing with a fart prude. I’ll let rip in my own home whenever I like.

Wallywobbles · 04/07/2026 10:37

We all fart as and when. Not out in public if possible or at least mostly out of earshot. But anyone who has suffered from IBS knows it’s just one of those things.

thingsarefine · 04/07/2026 10:35

Not really it was more like mutually assured destruction.

I knew my DH was a keeper when, after he’d first cooked a meal for me, he put his arms around me from behind and I accidentally let a big one go. He pretended to have been blown across the room by it and said “I’d better not cook you that again!”

downloadtoad · 04/07/2026 10:39

Oh come on, it's a fart, stop clutching your pearls. Better out than in, as they say. I don’t fart in front of my dh but I see the funny side of it when one pops out.
Also is he 14?! Women don’t do that ? Okay 😆

FullLondonEye · 04/07/2026 10:42

Christ this thread is awful. There's no way I could live with someone I had to be embarassed to fart around. As for only doing it in the toilet, how the hell do you control it in that way? I never fart deliberately but there's no way I can always anticipate and plan around them.

My father is one of those who pretends bodily functions don't happen, particularly for women. It meant I had to grow up being paralysingly embarassed about periods and poo too. I do not want my daughters growing up scared to ever admit they have to poo, bleed and fart.

For all those so disgusted by it, try unclenching a bit. It's very relaxing.

DontBotherJustChooseYourself · 04/07/2026 10:43

"women don't do that" - he's a sexist pig. So it's OK for men, but not women?

And yes, we do. It's a normal bodily function. It's also not great for gut health over the longer term and can cause bloating.

This will be the start of controlling the behaviour of how he perceives a woman should behave, so I'd bin him.

foodlovefood · 04/07/2026 10:43

I must be the minority here. Public, work anyone other than family or DP I keep respectful and try to avoid doing it in that company

but at home we fart in front of each other. We are comfortable around each other. It’s not deliberate it’s just nature. You fart in your sleep, so I imagine you’ve all done it before in front of your partner. Your body doesn’t wake you up for that.

StrawberryMatchaLatte · 04/07/2026 10:44

It's only a fart. He needs to chill out. If you were gassing away all night and doing it deliberately I could understand his reaction but that doesn't sound like it's the case. I'd assume from this reaction so early on into the relationship that he could turn out to be a bit of a control freak or a bully later on.

MrsShawnHatosy · 04/07/2026 10:45

Quite, and in dribs and drabs too. A bit more escaping with each step you take. I’d rather get it over with quickly tbh.

BatchCookBabe · 04/07/2026 10:46

Yeah dump him. Ridiculous to get so offended at a fart FFS! I always imagine the people who go all pearl-clutchy at farts are the same kind of people who have sex in the dark, under the covers, and wear marigolds. 😂

Having to remove yourself from your OWN chair in your OWN home to go to the bathroom to fart is utter madness! How do some people get through life? LMFAO! 😆

Anyahyacinth · 04/07/2026 10:48

His attitude about a bodily function is a worry. I wouldnt accept that. What happens if you are sick? Or not sick but have a period leak? Nope OTT reaction ..the comment about "women don't do that"....that's as ugly a thought as they come...he'd be done for me

BatchCookBabe · 04/07/2026 10:48

Exactly this. No-one needs to walk around farting in public, but FFS if you can't fart in your own home, what is the world coming to?! I could never be with someone who went batshit and threatened to dump me if I farted in front of him again. Who does he think he is. What a diva! 😂

Also, I DO fart in public if I need to. Better out than in. 😆

didgeridid · 04/07/2026 10:49

Farting in private 🤣🤣

If I need to fart around my family, I fart. I don't make a song and dance about it but I wouldn't go to another room or hold it in 🤣 we all do it, we laugh, we move on.
Obviously I would try and hold it in when others are around but imagine hiding farts from someone you've been with for over a decade 🤣

NearlyNewNonny · 04/07/2026 10:50

30+ years and I've never done that in bed unless alone. I think DH would actually have dumped me.

LondonLass2026 · 04/07/2026 10:52

Why are you calling him a hypocrite when he hasn't even done anything? It's your brothers, not your partner, who do this. So why are you calling your partner names?
