New DP overreacting?!!

Nettlesal · 03/07/2026 20:26

I grew up with two brothers and have had a few ex’s, all were not shy at all about breaking wind around me. New DP - together about 2 months. I decided I wasn’t going to keep holding it in for ever so let one go in bed last night. He shot up, said how disgusted he was and that women don’t do that and if I did it again he’d dump me?! Is it me or are men absolute hypocrites when it comes to this 😂

BunnyLake · 04/07/2026 11:38

I’ve never deliberately done it myself and I didn’t like guys doing it either. I would have gone to the bathroom or something. An accidental fart is one thing but letting one rip on purpose is hugely off putting to me. I didn’t grow up in a house of deliberate farters so it’s not the norm for me.

MrsBroccolini · 04/07/2026 11:43

I grew up with a brother. Have lots of exes. With current partner for 11 years and married for 5. I’ve never intentionally farted in front of him nor him me. They’re not totally hidden or never happen but it’s both done out of respect and to not kill all the sexiness.

Cakeandcardio · 04/07/2026 11:44

My husband (together for 26 years) has never intentionally done this in front of me and neither has I with him. Yuck 🤢

BillieWiper · 04/07/2026 11:45

He thinks women don't pass gass from their arseholes?! Does he know that digestive tracts and bowels are the same in both sexes?

What a mug. And how ridiculous. It's fine to say 'eew crikey that stinks!' if it does. But not be furious and leap out of bed and threaten to leave over it.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 04/07/2026 11:49

thingsarefine · 04/07/2026 09:37

I genuinely don’t understand the absolute pearl clutching about farting.

Would I do it at work? No. But I’m not going to sit at home uncomfortable with wind.

Yeah this.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 04/07/2026 11:50

LlynTegid · 04/07/2026 10:04

I think that breaking wind is something to do on the toilet, nowhere else. OP has a different view.

Just incompatible.

And what if you're nowhere near a toilet at the time?

thingsarefine · 04/07/2026 11:51

RichardMarxisinnocent · 04/07/2026 11:49

Yeah this.

Like am I going to walk out of the living room 10 times in one evening if I’ve eaten a meal that has had an impact on my stomach? Of course I won’t!

Gonedeaf · 04/07/2026 11:52

Yeah I'd dump him for this. What a massive overreaction. Pompous prat.

Kulwinder54 · 04/07/2026 11:54

Farting (and burping) infront of people deliberately is horrible and nasty. Just dont do it.

FullLondonEye · 04/07/2026 11:57

NearlyNewNonny · 04/07/2026 10:50

30+ years and I've never done that in bed unless alone. I think DH would actually have dumped me.

You do it while you are asleep. I don't mean to upset you but you do. You just aren't aware of it. And as for being dumped for farting... There are no words.

SpaceRaccoon · 04/07/2026 12:04

I fart like fuck, joys of peri. DH and I find it hilarious. No way would I be with someone that uptight and sexist.

ilikemethewayiam · 04/07/2026 12:05

Well I’m with your DP up to a point. Someone farting in the bed I’m lying in would revolt me, however his comment about women not doing it would piss me right off. Implying that it’s okay for men to do these but not women in my view is misogynistic. I’ve had a couple of dates with men who have held women to higher standards. One thought it was okay for him to get steaming drunk and act like one of the lads but made a big fuss when I had one more glass of wine than normal and got a bit tipsy (i’m not much of a drinker). He could barely walk straight and was slurring but said that I’d embarrassed him by acting unladylike! I was just a bit giggly. He didn’t get another date.

They assume it's a poster with a kink and not genuine?

Ah ok! Thanks!

TheyGrewUp · 04/07/2026 12:10

BatchCookBabe · 04/07/2026 11:03

Exactly! It's a slippery slope. A man who is so precious about a natural bodily function like a fart or a burp is a red flag. He will be disgusted by other natural things too, like vomit, and poo, and period blood. I would throw this one back @Nettlesal

.

Or if your waters break in the bed or car. Happened with both of mine.

AImportantMermaid · 04/07/2026 12:16

NO!! FFS, nobody wants to smell your anus. Just leave the room or pop to the loo.

FullLondonEye · 04/07/2026 12:19

My husband had a 'ladylike' ex like this. He certainly wasn't allowed to fart around her. It meant that shortly into our relationship when he became very, very ill with peritonitis, in hospital for a week, nearly died, and then on one occasion I had to help him clear up after a dark green, oily liquid bowel explosion because he couldn't even sit up unaided, he assumed I would want to dump him. Apparently that's what the ex would have done - and wouldn't have helped him clean up in the first place.

Woahtherehoney · 04/07/2026 12:22

I find the attitude on mumsnet about farting so bizzare - there was a thread a few weeks ago about people not even liking the word fart.

farting is a totally normal thing - I don’t mean go around farting in peoples faces but letting one out when sitting there is really nothing to get dumped over or cause the pearl clutching it has on this thread.

DBSFstupid · 04/07/2026 12:25

OriginalSkang · 04/07/2026 11:26

In case its someone wanting people to post stories about them farting in bed with their boyfriends so they can wank over it

Bloody hell, Really?!

Floralibra · 04/07/2026 12:25

Wtf hahahaha surely you must all have had horrendous gut issues holding farts in 🤣

ofc not at the dinner table or other situations like that but a little fart in your own bed isn’t a dumpable offence 🤣

Dollymylove · 04/07/2026 12:26

I know people who claim they dont fart.
Yes you do!! Stop bloody lying!!

Floralibra · 04/07/2026 12:26

OP I won’t lie two months is quite premature to be letting farts out but your DO is a wet lettuce 🤣 dumping you because ‘women don’t do that’ LOL I’d dump him for being a twat

DotterOfBendigeidfran · 04/07/2026 12:32

nooneliterallyspatouttheirtea · 04/07/2026 10:06

You've killed me with your deliberate farting 😂😂😂

Everyone farts. Even you.

We fart all the time and fall about laughing. We give stars (1 - 5) for loudness, prolonged sound, the startle factor, stench, ability to cling to soft furnishings etc.

Unclench those pearls and have a laugh.

DotterOfBendigeidfran · 04/07/2026 12:34

Meant to add. His words are offensive. Far more so than letting rip with a fart.

Throw this one back but not yet. You don't want to always be the one that dumped him over a fart. Find something terrible about him in a fortnight and let it be that thing!

Dollymylove · 04/07/2026 12:37

The first fart in a new relationship is always the hardest
Once its done it should open the doors for both partners to fart freely and loudly whenever the need arises 🤣🤣
