AIBU to think 2 cups of tea is not high intake?

As part of a health study I had to record my fluid consumption in ml for a day and state what the fluid was.

Over a course of a day (6am-10pm) I drank 2750ml.
This was made up of:
2x330ml of tea
1x330ml of green tea
1750ml of water

The tea was drank in the morning, the green tea in the afternoon and the water over the course of the whole day.

It was noted - “the patient has a high intake of tea”

Issues that arose to this study have ruled out anything to do with fluid consumption so no further action required.

But it’s got me questioning my tea intake - I didn’t think I drank a lot of tea.

AIBU - 2 cups of tea is high intake
YANBU - that is surprising to me I’d say more than 2 is high intake

No way I'd consider that to be a "high" intake.

It doesn't particularly surprise me that it is, however. There is a lot of this sort of notation in healthcare, from my personal experience. It even contradicts itself within the same sentence quite often. This is definitely one I'd question i.e. how they are defining "high intake".

Well I drink 25-30 tea and coffees a day so 2 is nothing imo 😂

Wow, I thought my 10 cups a day was a lot!

AlmostAJillSandwich · 28/06/2026 21:25

I havent had tea or coffee in 20 years, i have maybe 5 hot chocolates total per winter, and none of my other drinks are ever hot. Even then the hot choc is because i'm cold or enjoy the taste, i still need a cold drink alongside.

Don't understand how anyone finds a hot drink refreshing or thirst quenching, if its not cold, it doesn't satisfy my feeling of thirst.

celticprincess · 28/06/2026 21:28

I drink 2 per hour if I’m home. If I’m out and about then less so but way more than 2 in a day.

Satisfiedwithanapple · 28/06/2026 21:41

yanbu op. All this drink-related drama of anything liquid apart from pure water being bad is good for no one.

Tuesdayschild50 · 28/06/2026 21:48

Not at all.. I have only 2 cups a day.. how ridiculous to note that .
All fluids are good anyways.

I think I'm doing pretty good then considering. I've had insomnia since I was a child so the caffeine hasn't caused that and the only time I had high BP was during my pregnancy which completely went back to normal after the birth. As I said up thread, I don't think caffeine affects me the same way as other people because my body is so used to it. Thanks for the stats though, I appreciate your concern

You're welcome. Sorry if I came across as condescending, but that is a lot of coffee and tea! Shock Flowers (None of my business of course.) Grin

You didn't come across condescending at all. And I was genuinely thankful for your concern 😊

I'm breastfeeding and drink more tea than that!

Roastiesarethebestbit · 28/06/2026 23:10

I’ve normally had 2 cups of tea before 9:00 am. And then another 3 or 4 cups through the day.

HoraceCope · 27/06/2026 06:29

i have 4 a day
and then in the evening 1 or 2 green tea

Green tea has caffeine in it. Just thinking from your evening switch to green tea drinking you might not realise.

IceLollly · 29/06/2026 10:16

So a low intake is 0 and a normal intake is 1?

BauhausOfEliott · 29/06/2026 10:21

Oddly, the only time I've been told off for drinking too much tea is on Mumsnet.

I have around eight mugs a day in winter and four or five in summer.

Suzjspik · 29/06/2026 10:33

Its not high Ive usually had 3 cups before 11am

HeyThereDelila · 29/06/2026 10:38

I drink about 5-7 mugs of tea a day.

2 is not high 😂

Christ if you ask me ma she’d say 10 cups a day is the bare minimum for survival.

Quite.
There is the concept of ‘enough tea in a day’. We call it Teaquilibrium.

Which for me is about 10 decaff mugs a day.

I have a cup at breakfast, one at playtime , after lunch, after school and have been known to take a cup up to bed. Tea is good!

I haven't taken a cup of tea to bed for years! I went through a phase of doing it when I was at university and haven't thought about it for ages! I must start this again as an occasional treat

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 29/06/2026 19:41

That sounds quite low to me. Most of the people I know who like tea seem to drink it all day long. I don't like tea, and I usually drink 4 mugs of coffee in a day before I just feel like I've had enough, it loses its appeal, so I've always rather envied tea lovers because it seems to be something people can drink a lot more of.

I'd say you had 3 cups rather than 2 though. Green tea is still a tea variety, it's not like mint tea or something which isn't related to tea at all. But 3 cups is still very moderate.

Laura95167 · 29/06/2026 21:02

In a day i usually have 4 - 8x teas, 1x coffee 1x glass of milk or apple juice, 1x can of coke, and 1 litre of water.

I think 2 teas is minimal

InterestedDad37 · 29/06/2026 21:45

I've had 5 mugs of tea since 6pm 😃
And I'm doing just fine (wibble wibble 😵‍💫 🫖 ☕)

EastEndQueen · 29/06/2026 23:19

It’s nothing. I don’t really drink water tbh. Today I have drunk:

  • About 10 mugs of Yorkshire tea with milk throughout the day, first on getting up at 6am, the last at work at 7pm
  • 1 Diet Coke at lunch
  • 1 Black coffee on the way to work
  • 1 alcohol-free beer with dinner
  • 1 mint tea (now) at bedtime

I do have poor sleep tbf 🤣

Ahahahaa dread to think what they'd call my 6 large mugs of coffee per day(!)
