AIBU to think 2 cups of tea is not high intake?

As part of a health study I had to record my fluid consumption in ml for a day and state what the fluid was.

Over a course of a day (6am-10pm) I drank 2750ml.
This was made up of:
2x330ml of tea
1x330ml of green tea
1750ml of water

The tea was drank in the morning, the green tea in the afternoon and the water over the course of the whole day.

It was noted - “the patient has a high intake of tea”

Issues that arose to this study have ruled out anything to do with fluid consumption so no further action required.

But it’s got me questioning my tea intake - I didn’t think I drank a lot of tea.

AIBU - 2 cups of tea is high intake
YANBU - that is surprising to me I’d say more than 2 is high intake

I have at 6 VERY big mugs of tea a.day. When i had to record my fluid intake it was around 4 litres 🤣

PenelopeJoanSterling · 28/06/2026 18:56

on average i have a mug of tea every 40-50 mins, and in an evening or day its around 10 for evening or around 18 a day estimated

In my family the kettles never cold!

Tea to start the day, tea while getting ready, tea for breakfast, tea before you leave the house, tea when you get back to the house, tea with dinner, tea in-between, tea before bed, tea in the bath, tea in bed...and of course tea for any visitor or upset in the house. Life is tea.

Well I drink 25-30 tea and coffees a day so 2 is nothing imo 😂

How do you have time for that??

ERthree · 28/06/2026 19:02

There are very few moments in my life when i don't have a brew on the go. I honestly do think i would commit murder if i didn't have access to tea.

FunnyOrca · 28/06/2026 19:03

I voted YABU because over a third of your liquids came from tea (the green tea is included). I don’t think it is about how much tea you drank but rather how much of liquids were tea.

Coconutter24 · 28/06/2026 19:03

5+ is considered high so 2 cups a day is ok

MustUseAName · 28/06/2026 19:03

Tea drinking is an inherent part of my identity and culture. Babies were given extra milky tea in bottles, moving to milky tea on a saucer. There’s a celebration, make some tea. There’s a crisis, make some tea.

I have reduced to 6-8 cups of day. My 90 year old grandmother had about 25 a day. 2 a day is practically an affront to tea!

I have 2 before work 😂

I have 2 at a time 😂

Ohnobackagain · 28/06/2026 19:05

@HighTeaIntake green tea is just made from younger tea leaves (and processed differently) but even counting that as 3 teas, 3 teas is nothing in our house 😂😂😂

It’s a lot compared to your low water intake.

Her water intake is not low.

Anything from 1.5-2 itres of fluids s recommended

She's having 1.75 litres of water and an extra 1litre of direct fluids (e.g. water, because tea is basically water....so counts as water. Even if it doesn't,she's still having enough)

....and any water in her food!

Omg you’d get on well with my dad 😂

Moveoverdarlin · 28/06/2026 19:08

I would guess I have about 8 each day. Two in quick succession as soon as I get up.

3luckystars · 28/06/2026 19:09

I have a large mug from Disneyland and it holds 750ml!! So 2 of those cups may be considered moderate. *

  • not including Ireland

I'm a sahm to an energetic toddler 😅

OneFluentGoldBee · 28/06/2026 19:18

I have 4-6 mugs of tea before I leave for work at 0730 and probably 20 over the course of the day so I’d say 2 is so low as to be deficient 😂

Flossy1985 · 28/06/2026 19:25

There is still caffeine in green tea. That’s where it peaks I would assume. I drink 1-2 in a morning but not recently due to the heat. Switch to fruit tea maybe?

My nephrologist, who once commented that he’s paid to be cautious, said 2l of liquid of any sort.

BestZebbie · 28/06/2026 19:33

I don't think that is high although I don't think 3 x 330ml is three cups either - 330ml is a full can of pop, you could fill up a teacup several times from one can.

onedogatoddlerandababy · 28/06/2026 19:34

whoever marked your intake was being ridiculous- 2 cups is the amount a pregnant woman watching caffeine intake can routinely have.

I believe nhs website says more than 7 cups of tea a day is high

I have anything between 2-4 a day depending on the weather and what I’m doing

SabbatWheel · 28/06/2026 19:38

After a bowel resection and stoma bag in 2014 they were happy that I was drinking anything. In fact, one doctor said the 8 glasses of water a day thing is a myth and that as long as you get ‘enough’ fluid (which is quite individual, and of course not sugary or alcoholic) then tea all day is fine.

I very rarely drink anything other than tea and my kidney function has always been spot on when tested alongside routine bowel blood tests.

AmusedOpalShaker · 28/06/2026 19:41

2 cups of tea is basically no tea in my opinion 😂😂

WeddingInvitation · 28/06/2026 19:46

3 large mugs before work, caffeinated, then switch to decaf..about 8 at work, another one at night….

vanessashanessa99 · 28/06/2026 19:47

I don't drink tea but I do love a cup of coffee. I only make them at home (have a thermos i take out with me) I probably have about 5-7 a day. Not decaf neither. I can have one and fall straight to sleep. Caffeine doesn't bother me.
My late nan drank enough tea to sink a ship. Don't think I ever saw her drink water unless it had those ghastly dissolvable paracetamols in it.
