AIBU to think 2 cups of tea is not high intake?

As part of a health study I had to record my fluid consumption in ml for a day and state what the fluid was.

Over a course of a day (6am-10pm) I drank 2750ml.
This was made up of:
2x330ml of tea
1x330ml of green tea
1750ml of water

The tea was drank in the morning, the green tea in the afternoon and the water over the course of the whole day.

It was noted - “the patient has a high intake of tea”

Issues that arose to this study have ruled out anything to do with fluid consumption so no further action required.

But it’s got me questioning my tea intake - I didn’t think I drank a lot of tea.

AIBU - 2 cups of tea is high intake
YANBU - that is surprising to me I’d say more than 2 is high intake

Well I drink 25-30 tea and coffees a day so 2 is nothing imo 😂

montysmaw · 27/06/2026 02:34

I think thats quite low.
I have breakfast, tea break , lunch, probably dinner, supper! So that's 5! And I don't think thats high!

Rednorth · 27/06/2026 03:02

Its absolutely not. But perhaps its a threshold thing based on ratio of tea to other fluids maybe?

I'd ask them out of curiosity.

Teaandscone · 27/06/2026 03:20

I have a cup at breakfast, one at playtime , after lunch, after school and have been known to take a cup up to bed. Tea is good!

KnickerlessFlannel · 27/06/2026 03:42

I have 2 before work 😂

Silverbirchleaf · 27/06/2026 03:44

Not high at all, and I’d say low.

Slinkyminky22 · 27/06/2026 03:44

I dont think its a lot. Its basically 1 litre of tea though, so maybe they have a threshold.

EveryKneeShallBow · 27/06/2026 05:10

For health reasons my fluid intake is measured and commented on by doctors. I have a massive mug that holds 450 mls. I fill that with tea (decaf or green) at least six times a day. In addition I have water, orange juice, the occasional takeaway coffee, lime and soda or wine. My intake is considered pretty normal.

Charalam · 27/06/2026 05:14

I have 3 before I leave for work. One coffee when I get there, water for the rest of the day and one when I get home.

tilypu · 27/06/2026 05:14

It's not two cups - it's three, surely?

But, even as someone who drinks maybe four cups of tea in a year, it doesn't sound high to me.

HelmholtzWatson · 27/06/2026 05:27

It seems highly unethical to provide this feedback with no further context - was this a university study? I conduct research at a university and would never feed this back to a participant, even if is was true, which it isn't.

Fatiguedwithlife · 27/06/2026 05:30

I drink at least 10 cups a day. 2/3 isn’t high imo

AzureLurker · 27/06/2026 05:38

I had to do the same, issues probably relates to being a teacher that never gets to drink enough or able to get to a toilet most days and was told to give up my one coffee in the morning! Hint- that didn't solve my issues.

lowtidetimes · 27/06/2026 05:47

I wouldn’t also class this as a high intake.

I recently gave up tea and now only have one cup (if any) in the morning. I gave up to help with my sleep and my teeth were also becoming discoloured.

I had awful headaches when I stopped and it has made me realise the 5-8 cups I was having was probably rather a lot!

But two certainly isn’t a lot in my view.

parachutegirl · 27/06/2026 06:02

That’s ridiculous. I have about 4 on an average day - my dm used to drink about 25!

PersephoneParlormaid · 27/06/2026 06:09

I now drink about 4 a day, used to drink far more.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 27/06/2026 06:12

I must be an excessive tea drinker. I drink two before 7am and another 5 throughout the day.

BananaPeels · 27/06/2026 06:13

As soon as one cup is done the kettle is on in our house. 3 cups of tea a day is, quite frankly, offensive. Now if they had said 10 then they might be ok to say drinks a moderate amount of tea!

Dh is vegetarian who doesn't eat eggs and literally the only dairy he has is a tiny splash of full fat in his single cup of tea in the morning. When he had a health check after he turned 70 he was told to 'maybe cut down on your dairy intake'.

He only eats fruit, bread and salads. He detests oily food and doesn't even eat salad dressing. We decided that as all his blood markers were perfect and if anything he is underweight that the HCP felt she 'had to suggest something'.

BlindSpotForCats · 27/06/2026 06:19

Oh- and I was recently reading Dr Michael Greger's amazing book 'How Not to Die'. Tea (and particularly green tea) is exceptionally good for you. He did say that some adverse effects for green tea had been observed in a patient who was steeping 50 bags in a pot each day though.

UhOhRatPoo · 27/06/2026 06:24

Bizarre. Would really be interested in the answer if you were able to go back and ask for clarification.

I average 4 cups a day, wouldn’t occur to me to limit it in any way. Tea is Life.

BlindSpotForCats · 27/06/2026 06:25

Ive just made myself a cup of tea thanks to this thread.

HoraceCope · 27/06/2026 06:29

i have 4 a day
and then in the evening 1 or 2 green tea

ExplodingSmittens · 27/06/2026 06:31

KnickerlessFlannel · 27/06/2026 03:42

I have 2 before work 😂

I have 2 usually before I even leave for work Grin

Ebsalami · 27/06/2026 06:42

First, your vote explanation is misleading. Why are you not including the green tea in your "tea" count? Rather than "two cups" you are drinking virtually a litre of tea each day (though that still doesn’t seem like a huge amount to me).

Secondly, 330ml is not a normal "cup of tea". I had to measure my liquid intake for a couple of days and discovered that a normal coffee mug contains about 250ml. 330ml (the equivalent of over half a pint) would be a extremely large "cup".
