AIBU to think 2 cups of tea is not high intake?

HighTeaIntake · 27/06/2026 02:29

As part of a health study I had to record my fluid consumption in ml for a day and state what the fluid was.

Over a course of a day (6am-10pm) I drank 2750ml.
This was made up of:
2x330ml of tea
1x330ml of green tea
1750ml of water

The tea was drank in the morning, the green tea in the afternoon and the water over the course of the whole day.

It was noted - “the patient has a high intake of tea”

Issues that arose to this study have ruled out anything to do with fluid consumption so no further action required.

But it’s got me questioning my tea intake - I didn’t think I drank a lot of tea.

AIBU - 2 cups of tea is high intake
YANBU - that is surprising to me I’d say more than 2 is high intake

when I drank tea (for some reason it's making me feel queasy now) I had about 5 mugs a day.
now switched to coffee instead and drink the same amount.

3 cups/mugs a day is not a lot.

ScrambledEggs12 · 28/06/2026 19:52

I've had 3 cups of tea in my life, so it's high compared to that.

fiestatime1 · 28/06/2026 19:54

Doesn’t seem much. I’ve had 3 x 500ml mugs of tea today plus about a litre of water

ThatSourGobstopper · 28/06/2026 19:54

2 cups of tea is high intake? Yeah right! I drink it by the gallon. 2 cups of tea is nowt! I’d like to know what the note taker would make of my round the clock tea consumption. 😂

I'm a sahm to an energetic toddler 😅

This answers my next question about whether they’re all caffeinated 🤣

MassiveOvaryaction · 28/06/2026 20:10

If it's not decaffeinated then those 2 (3 including the green) would be too much for me!
I guess it's heading to 40% of your total fluid intake too, maybe it's the ratio and not the volume that's the issue?

MassiveOvaryaction · 28/06/2026 20:12

Actually when you were recording @HighTeaIntake are you sure you got your decimals in the right place? Maybe you put 3 litres of tea vs 1.75 of water?!

OchreReader · 28/06/2026 20:15

I’ve had at least 2 by the time I’m at my desk, and it continues throughout the day. Two or three cups is nothing to me! The only person who’s ever moaned at me about it is my dentist

😂 I can't drink decaf tea or coffee. They just taste so wrong. I've been drinking like this for years and years so I don't even think the caffeine affects me any more 😅

Enko · 28/06/2026 20:23

I havent voted as neither of.your opyions IMO are right.

Your tea intake is 36% of your total liquid intake

I would say thats fairly high.

Green tea counts as tea IMO

I drink more tea and coffee than that in a usual day. However I also drink more water. So my total tea/coffee intake comes to 26% total.

Its all relative IMO

Chilly80 · 28/06/2026 20:27

I have about 6

This 'study' is probably done by the same kind of people who suggest a good weight for a woman who is 5 ft 4 inches tall is 7 stone 10 pounds.

These experts don't seem very 'expert' to me much of the time!!!

Of course 2 cups of tea is not a high intake. 🙄

Well that height and weight are fine but that's by the by.

Unless OP comes back to tell us more about the study, for all we know she's just filling up a spreadsheet on "how much tea MNers who responded to a question" drink.

oliviaAustin · 28/06/2026 20:37

It’s fine. Up to 400mg of caffeine per day is within safe limits. Tea has about 70mg a cup.

I only drink caffeine free but have about 6 lol.

The note may have been because tea contains other bioactive ingredients which can have an effect on the heart, brain, immune cells etc.

I’m 5’4 and 8st and a healthy size 8… if I lost 4lbs I would still look and be perfectly healthy. I have muscle and fat still and don’t even look very thin.

BerryTwister · 28/06/2026 20:48

Devilsmommy · 27/06/2026 02:34

Well I drink 25-30 tea and coffees a day so 2 is nothing imo 😂

@Devilsmommy seriously? That’s about 10 pints a day!

godmum56 · 28/06/2026 20:51

I am a retired clinician (not nurse or medic) If I was managing the person who wrote the note I would be pulling them up about the subjectivity of the notation for two reasons. The first is that this is a subjective view of what is a "normal" consumption of tea. If they wanted to note that a high percentage or proportion of your watery drink intake is tea, then that is what they should have written and should probably have noted why this needs reporting. The other thing is that "tea" is not a standard thing. People like their tea weak or strong which will have an effect on caffeine or tannin intake, with sugar or sweetener or with nothing, also with milk in varying quantities or none. Basically what they have documented is pretty meaningless.

This. ^ I can't imagine any universe where I would drink 30 cups of coffee a day. (I don't drink tea - vile stuff!)

DH drinks about 7 (mugs) a day (of coffee, he hates tea too,) and I think that's quite a lot. I drink 2 coffees a day. One with my breakfast, and a latte with lunch. The rest of the time I drink water. 30 cups of coffee or tea a day is batshit.

30 cups a day though! Shock That is a seriously high amount of cups of tea and coffee. Actually dangerous to your health.

From The British Heart Foundation

30 cups of tea/coffee per day is an extremely high amount and poses severe risks for acute caffeine toxicity and chronic health problems.

The Facts:

Recommended limits: Health experts recommend a maximum of 400 mg of caffeine a day for most adults.

30 cups breakdown: Even at conservative caffeine levels, 30 cups can easily exceed 2,500 to 3,000 mg of caffeine daily, which is more than 6 to 7 times the recommended safe limit.

Potential symptoms: Consuming this much can lead to rapid heart rate, severe insomnia, high blood pressure, muscle tremors, and acute anxiety attacks.

You really need to cut down. 😬

Isntiticonic · 28/06/2026 21:06

You say tea, but it's mostly just water, I'd say that's perfectly fine.
Some people only drink litres of coke, red bull etc. Your intake sounds healthy to me.

I think I'm doing pretty good then considering. I've had insomnia since I was a child so the caffeine hasn't caused that and the only time I had high BP was during my pregnancy which completely went back to normal after the birth. As I said up thread, I don't think caffeine affects me the same way as other people because my body is so used to it. Thanks for the stats though, I appreciate your concern

AlmostAJillSandwich · 28/06/2026 21:10

So over 1 litre of tea a day. (The green counts the same as "regular" black tea)

Both types of tea that contain caffeine. That is quite a high caffeine intake imo, and over 1/3 of your fluid intake for a day is caffeinated.

BitOutOfPractice · 28/06/2026 21:12

Slinkyminky22 · 27/06/2026 03:44

I dont think its a lot. Its basically 1 litre of tea though, so maybe they have a threshold.

How is that a lite of tea?

YANBU op. I drink at least 5 cups a day.

eta sorry I didn’t count the green tea, apologies. It’s still not too much tea.

IceLollly · 28/06/2026 21:12

I have between 6-10 mugs of tea a day, plus water. I rarely drink anything else. Only 1 maybe will be 2 will be decaf.
