AIBU to think 2 cups of tea is not high intake?

As part of a health study I had to record my fluid consumption in ml for a day and state what the fluid was.

Over a course of a day (6am-10pm) I drank 2750ml.
This was made up of:
2x330ml of tea
1x330ml of green tea
1750ml of water

The tea was drank in the morning, the green tea in the afternoon and the water over the course of the whole day.

It was noted - “the patient has a high intake of tea”

Issues that arose to this study have ruled out anything to do with fluid consumption so no further action required.

But it’s got me questioning my tea intake - I didn’t think I drank a lot of tea.

AIBU - 2 cups of tea is high intake
YANBU - that is surprising to me I’d say more than 2 is high intake

I have at least 3 teas a day and sometimes 4-5. I also have 2 coffees every morning. In between I try to drink water and usually have at least 1 soft drink (squash, flavoured water or diet pop).

Devilsmommy · 27/06/2026 02:34

Well I drink 25-30 tea and coffees a day so 2 is nothing imo 😂

How do you cope with all the weeing? 🤣

Devilsmommy · 28/06/2026 18:11

😂😂😂 I don't drink water or juice or pop so I live on tea and coffees 😁

don't worry @ChasingRainbow5 my mind was boggled too!

@Devilsmommy do you make a fresh cup every time? If so are you really spending an hour and a half a day just making hot drinks, before you even drink them! How about cups - do you literally wash up 30 mugs every day? Or do you have a big tumbler and do a few at a time? Even then, assuming an average cup is about 300ml you're drinking about 9 litres a day - that's like 4 and a half of those big coke bottles. How are you not peeing every half an hour?

330ml ??? That’s a big ol mug

Was that directed at me? My measuring jug reckons half a pint is 280ml, and when I tipped half a pint/280ml of water into one of my tea mugs, it came to approx half an inch/1cm below the top.

(I'm old, so don't think in metric!)

Wingingitbestican · 28/06/2026 18:29

Sounds very low to me. I drink around 6-8 cups of tea a day.

First, your vote explanation is misleading. Why are you not including the green tea in your "tea" count? Rather than "two cups" you are drinking virtually a litre of tea each day (though that still doesn’t seem like a huge amount to me).

Secondly, 330ml is not a normal "cup of tea". I had to measure my liquid intake for a couple of days and discovered that a normal coffee mug contains about 250ml. 330ml (the equivalent of over half a pint) would be a extremely large "cup".

"Secondly, 330ml is not a normal "cup of tea". I had to measure my liquid intake for a couple of days and discovered that a normal coffee mug contains about 250ml. 330ml (the equivalent of over half a pint) would be a extremely large "cup"."

I'm not sure that I would agree with you here.

Your post just prompted me to measure how much there is in my mug that I bought from Tesco.

Filling it up to the normal level that I do, it holds 450ml (it holds 500ml to the brim).

"... a normal coffee mug contains about 250ml"

Really? I have a smaller mug that holds around 350ml (or about 380ml if filled to the brim).

I occasionally pop in to a McDonalds for a quick coffee and their smallest cup is also 350ml.

"330ml (the equivalent of over half a pint) would be a extremely large "cup"."

I'm not so sure that it would be these days. Perhaps if you were to go to a restaurant or stay in a hotel then you might well come across tea cups that are typically around 130ml. But, other than that, if I ever go to anybody's home then they will normally have cups/mugs (call them what you will) that are the typical 350ml size.

A litre of tea a day is fine I would say. It's all fluid intake. I drink about 4 or 5 plus a coffee a day.

Nobody in Ireland would be alive if this is excessive ☕️☕️

That's very true!

My Irish friends drink far more tea than me, I reckon their kettles only get cold when they're asleep or away from home.

Violet76 · 28/06/2026 18:34

I have 2 cups of tea before I get out of bed in a morning!

BatsInHibernation · 28/06/2026 18:37

Devilsmommy · 28/06/2026 18:25

Well thank you, I appreciate your compliments 😁 I would definitely be a good tea mentor I think 😊

Apologies for mad misspells and bad grammar. Possibly tea drunk!

TheCurious0range · 28/06/2026 18:38

It's 3 cups, green tea is also caffeinated. So more than a third of your daily fluid intake is caffeinated.

TooManyTeeShirts · 28/06/2026 18:39

EveryKneeShallBow · 27/06/2026 05:10

For health reasons my fluid intake is measured and commented on by doctors. I have a massive mug that holds 450 mls. I fill that with tea (decaf or green) at least six times a day. In addition I have water, orange juice, the occasional takeaway coffee, lime and soda or wine. My intake is considered pretty normal.

Is that the Sports Direct mug? I have a 750ml pot of tea with breakfast and a Sports Direct mug of tea for midmorning, after dinner and teatime drinks. They are brilliant! If I get visitors or go visiting, there's more tea but in more normal sized mugs. ☕ ☕ ☕ It's probably what makes up most of my daily hydration..

OttersOnAPlane · 28/06/2026 18:39

My cup holds 200ml, so 660ml is threem cups plus a bit, and then another cup and a half of green tea as well.

For me that would be a lot. But I have one extra strong coffee a day and otherwise stick to water.

😂 I've got a 20 litre hot water dispenser so no waiting for a kettle to boil. Yes it's a fresh one every time. I swill my cup after every drink and wash it after I've had so many. It sounds like a lot but it's the only liquid intake I have so doesn't seem like loads to me😅

straighttola · 28/06/2026 18:42

It’s a lot compared to your low water intake.

user5683926547 · 28/06/2026 18:44

1 coffee, 3-5 teas, and 4 pints of water per day here. Occasional beer or wine if we go out somewhere. Never touch coke/lemonade type fizzy drinks or fruit juice as i don’t like them much.

BringBackCatsEyes · 28/06/2026 18:44

As part of a health study

What health study? Is it funded by Nescafe?!

PreparationIsKey · 28/06/2026 18:46

I have 5 ish a day. Sometimes more Sometimes less but 3 minimum

HutchMadras · 28/06/2026 18:47

i was asked at a medical how many cups of tea I drank a day and i said about 5 or 6 which I thought fairly modest, but they didn't, as I know folk who have in excess of 10 cups a day. . Maybe it's a generational thing. or family thing.

LaurieFairyCake · 28/06/2026 18:48

Stupidly low, you can’t call yersel British with that intake!

minimum of 8 cups a day to be British

Unsure1045 · 28/06/2026 18:48

I’m drinking 2 cups of tea a day whilst pregnant so no, not a high intake.

Swampthing55 · 28/06/2026 18:49

My sports direct mug is 8 fl oz and I have three a day of coffee with two spoons. DP has a regular 330 ml mug and has one every 45 mins from 8 - 5 so about 12 with two spoons so yours seems light to me

Ebsalami · 28/06/2026 18:55

user67584329 · 28/06/2026 18:11

But, assuming the OP is using a tea bag, isn't it the same amount of tea, just more dilute?

Adding that I usually have two cups of breakfast tea and one of green tea or matcha per day.

Edited

Yes, that’s true.
