WIBU to work from home to go to the beach?

peachyhead · 25/06/2026 13:14

I live near the beach. Usually can't wfh but occasionally I can e.g. if I am getting work done at home or have an appointment. Would it be unreasonable to ask to wfh for the day tomorrow so I can go to the beach at lunchtime? I might stay out a little longer but will have my phone/laptop with me.

Are your local schools not closed/on half day?

It's definitely quieter here in the evening at the moment (SW)

Not that I’m aware of

Morally it's wrong otherwise you would have no problem telling work....

Well I know the answer would be no but I don’t think my morals necessarily need to align with those of my employer

Really? You sound like a great employee...

Enjoy the beach...

So you started the thread as a philosophical moral question and have every intention of going to the beach whatever responses?

Weird

Do you agree with every single view of your boss?

What is clear @peachyhead is that you need a break so hell yes… head to the beach

Jenniferrr · 25/06/2026 13:51

I genuinely wouldn’t think twice about this, OP - and nor would any of my colleagues. As long as you can get all your work done you can sit where you like when WFH, surely? MN tends to be very conservative about anything remotely resembling flexible working though, which I find baffling!

nothingbeatsajet2 · 25/06/2026 13:51

What a shame that you have some heat related issue at the house and need to be home tomorrow.

What a shame

Jenniferrr · 25/06/2026 13:53

I also like how some of the respondents saying YABU are themselves posting on MN in the middle of the working day 😁

Most of them will have some excuse but realistically, it’s hot as balls and most of us can’t concentrate anyway!

Definitely go to the beach if you can get away with it. People are overly loyal to the jobs. It’s just a job. If you left your employer would replace you in a week. They don’t care about you. You should prioritise yourself, go and enjoy the sun!

You should just WFH tomorrow x

Exactly this, I feel a bit bad concealing it from my employer but at the end of the day it's my lunch break! I feel like when I look back on my life I'll think of lovely days spent in the sun, not steadfastly conforming to office rules.

An hour. Like I said above I'll probably spend a few hours working in a cafe and for my actual lunch go for a little swim.

changeintheair · 25/06/2026 14:05

Do you usually tell them what you get up to during your breaks? Surely not. It doesn't need to be concealed either, there's no harm in going to the beach during a break.

LilyBunch25 · 25/06/2026 14:07

Is there WiFi...? Can you do your work without it? I can't.

Honeypizza · 25/06/2026 14:15

If you often work extra hours, your job is done well and you have a good relationship with your manager, I don't think this is a major issue. You want to go for a dip on your lunch break, which is your time to use as you please. Then spend a few hours working in a cafe, which is surely also fine on the odd occasion? I will sometimes do that for a change of scenery if my motivation is waning.

I WFH most of the week as standard though, so wouldn't need to ask for permission to not go to the office. That might change things I suppose. But it's worth an ask, as long as you won't be needed on an impromptu call! I'm a manager myself and would have no issue with someone in my team doing this if they're generally very reliable and get their job done well.

Right so the op is

would I be unreasonable to go for a swim during my lunch break and then to work in a cafe for the rest of the afternoon?

Like I said above I will hotspot off my phone if needed but intend to do any laptop work in a cafe anyway
