WIBU to work from home to go to the beach?

peachyhead · 25/06/2026 13:14

I live near the beach. Usually can't wfh but occasionally I can e.g. if I am getting work done at home or have an appointment. Would it be unreasonable to ask to wfh for the day tomorrow so I can go to the beach at lunchtime? I might stay out a little longer but will have my phone/laptop with me.

Doubt it – every major town in Kent shows rain on Sat and Sun, as does the wider scale weather map.

Do you agree with every single view of your boss?

You mean to work your contracted hours? Yeah it's kinda an important one :)

It could be classed as gross misconduct if found out, so be careful if an hour or so at the beach is worth losing your job

Yes, when did I say I wouldn't work my contracted hours? Do you know what a lunch hour is?

Yeah why not that's the benefits of WFH you can do what you like and enjoy your paid time on personal fun!😎

HalfColdCoffee · 25/06/2026 14:59

peachyhead · 25/06/2026 13:23

As above, my query was more of a moral one as although I'd be getting my work done, I wouldn't tell my employer I had gone to the beach.

Be careful OP, mumsnet has the highest population of morally superior and officious people known to man 😂

If you can, and you want to and it doesn’t negatively impact anyone else then go for it.

If I wasn’t back to back with meetings for the rest of the afternoon (following my allotted comfort break that Im using to doomscroll in the garden with a cold drink) I would be doing the same thing and making up my hours later!

I just posted from bbc weather
not a whiff of rain

Congratulations on being in the only town in Kent that has a different microclimate to the rest of the country, as I just had a look at about seven towns on the Kent coast and the BBC and Met Office forecasts show rain for all of them. (BTW you have to click on the actual day to see the full forecast. The symbol they show for the day is just the prevailing weather they expect, not every condition they expect, so even if the symbol is a cloud and a sun, there can still be rain expected at various points during the day.)

It's irrelevant, though, because the OP wasn't asking 'Shall I go to the beach on the weekend', she was asking 'Can I go to the beach in my lunch break?' and she doesn't need to justify to Mumsnet why she wants to go tomorrow. I'm sure that, as an adult, she realises that weekends exist.

OP, if it's in your lunch break you can do whatever the fuck you want, and if your employer allows you to work remotely and there are no security/privacy concerns about you working in public spaces, working from a beach cafe is no different to working from anywhere else.

I'm not able to work in public spaces for various reasons but I regularly work from a shady sun lounger in my garden during the summer!

Lol gross misconduct! There might be someone at the beach with a stopwatch reporting back to OPs employer!!

igelkott2026 · 25/06/2026 15:02

Why not go after work? It doesn't get dark until 10pm so plenty of time.

Anewappa · 25/06/2026 15:04

peachyhead · 25/06/2026 14:56

Yes, when did I say I wouldn't work my contracted hours? Do you know what a lunch hour is?

And yet despite this being just over your lunch break, you don’t think your employer would allow this as a one off due to the extreme weather?

Coconutter24 · 25/06/2026 15:04

peachyhead · 25/06/2026 13:20

I really couldn't care less if people are irritated by what a stranger on the internet is doing. That's like me going online and seeing a random person on holiday or a celebrity living a luxurious life and getting upset about it.

I'm not sure what relevance my job has but I'm a software developer.

So why are you here asking if YABU if you don’t care?

Anewappa · 25/06/2026 15:05

peachyhead · 25/06/2026 14:31

I'm on my lunch break. Came in a bit early today so it's run over slightly.

Your hour is almost up

what a way to have spent it

Do you not understand that her contracted hours include a lunch break? And did you miss the part where she said if she's out for longer than her lunch break, she'll have her laptop and phone with her to work remotely?

Also, you don't actually have a clue what the OP's contracted hours are, or what her working arrangement is. My employer lets us work pretty flexibly. I have colleagues who work the morning, then take a three hour break mid-afternoon to look after kids, then do the rest of their working hours in the evening when their partner gets home and takes over.

Anewappa · 25/06/2026 15:06

Coconutter24 · 25/06/2026 15:04

So why are you here asking if YABU if you don’t care?

The Op wanted a philosophical debate on the morality of it apparently

EarringsandLipstick · 25/06/2026 15:19

You seem to have decided now anyway but for what it's worth - YABU.

You don't have an appointment, so you don't need to WFH. In my workplace (I manage a team), if a colleague wants to switch their WFH day or work an extra day from home, they'll just ask - no lies needed - and once they are a responsible, capable colleague, as (nearly) all my team are, I'll have no issue saying yes.

If you don't feel you can do likewise, and that the company policy is no WFH unless in that specific circumstance, then (morally, as you keep referring to) you are wrong to do it. You are also not approaching your workplace or employer with integrity.

You also are not just planning on a trip to the beach in your lunchhour, you plan to stay longer, then work in a local cafe. I wouldn't be remotely happy, and it is against our WFH policy, very clearly, for my team to work from cafes. So if you are doing this, and your employer wouldn't agree, again, it's a poor decision and YABU.

movemountains · 25/06/2026 15:25

If you left your employer would replace you in a week.

This isnt the point of the thread but I never understand why people say this- of course they replace people who leave - imagine the state UK companies would be in if noone ever replaced those who left out of "loyalty" to that person 😂. Companies all over the country would be all closed in a few years!

Equally, if your workplace closed I am quite sure you'd be looking for another job immediately and wouldnt not work anywhere else out of respect for your old place of work! This idea that your employer must treat you like a beloved grandparent is frankly, weird AF to me

Pasithean · 25/06/2026 15:25

dadtoateen · 25/06/2026 13:31

Morally it's wrong otherwise you would have no problem telling work....

And you wouldn’t be asking here.

You do seem to be grumpy, is the sun getting to you?

You were meant to be in the office, you have lied to your employer so you can now work from home tomorrow.

Make sure your company laptop hasn't got locations switched on or a tracker :)

letmebetheone · 25/06/2026 15:32

Blimey, the OP is very defensive. Where is all the aggression coming from OP, is the sun getting to you?

Idontpostmuch · 25/06/2026 15:33

Anewappa · 25/06/2026 13:18

New to mumsnet then.

Do whatever you want. Obviously. Seems peculiar to ask mumsnet when we have squat all idea about your job etc.

and really…. Just, well, don’t be silly posting something that is obviously going to irritate many who are slogging their guts out in the office or commuting.

And I say this as someone who has the afternoon off work and is sunbathing

We get posts like this all the time. Don't know why @peachyhead is being given a hard time.

peachyhead · 25/06/2026 14:56

To be fair, you started this thread at 13.15 and last reply was at 14.56 so you have took an extra 30 mins today.

I know what a lunch HOUR is, apparently you don't :) :) Smile, it's just a joke..

Rubyslipperswitch · 25/06/2026 15:33

You can do whatever you want during your lunch break!

I live in a seaside town too and in my previous job I worked from home most of the time and in the summer I often went to the beach during my break.

I think on this thread are confusing the concept of spending all day at the beach instead of working with just spending your lunch break at the beach...

AcrossthePond55 · 25/06/2026 15:36

peachyhead · 25/06/2026 14:20

I'm hardly going to Spain 😂

Well, why not? 🤣

My DS1 frequently WF'H' from other places, otherwise he'd get cabin fever. He once phoned me from a beach cabana at a gorgeous ocean-front resort where he'd rented a room for a couple of nights 'just to get away'. As long as your work gets done and your employer can contact you when you're 'on duty', who cares where you work? Oh, and of course, as long as there aren't client privacy concerns.
