WIBU to work from home to go to the beach?

peachyhead · 25/06/2026 13:14

I live near the beach. Usually can't wfh but occasionally I can e.g. if I am getting work done at home or have an appointment. Would it be unreasonable to ask to wfh for the day tomorrow so I can go to the beach at lunchtime? I might stay out a little longer but will have my phone/laptop with me.

Do you usually tell them what you get up to during your breaks? Surely not. It doesn't need to be concealed either, there's no harm in going to the beach during a break.

Exactly
if the Op goes for a swim during her lunch break what’s the big deal

So where the moral issue ?

Anewappa · 25/06/2026 14:16

Right so the op is

would I be unreasonable to go for a swim during my lunch break and then to work in a cafe for the rest of the afternoon?

Yeah pretty much. As I said in my op I was feeling a bit guilty about concealing this from my employer as I'll need to say I have an appointment or something like that, since generally we don't wfh.

Do it. It doesn’t matter where you are if you’re intending to do the work.

What do you usually do on your lunch break? And do you tell your employer?

I'm usually in the office. I usually go for a walk. Why?

You want to go to the beach during your 1 hour lunch break

and then work in a cafe

you say you were interested in the moral issue.

where is the issue of Morality?

Think I will! General consensus seems to be its fine. Just felt a bit guilty over the little white lie.

Well I know the answer would be no but I don’t think my morals necessarily need to align with those of my employer

Well, it was exactly this attitude that got our WFH privileges removed completely because somebody got found out they were not WFH, they were WFS (working from Spain). It didn't matter that they were getting the work done. It did not align with company WFH policy.

Now, we all have to be in the office 5 days a week. They've installed trackers on our devices (their equipment so we can't argue) so, if, for whatever reason, we need to work remotely, they can check that we are where we say we are.

Don't be the person that ruins it for everyone.

So instead of a walk
you’re going to spend you hour at the beach

do you tell your employer every day that you’re going for a walk? And your employers response is?

@Anewappa HTH as you keep repeatedly asking what my issue is

I also live very close to a beach but wouldn’t go in the daytime in these temps. I wait for evening. 9pm is the best time to go to the beach in a heatwave IMO.

I'm hardly going to Spain 😂

It turns out @peachyhead is only planning on being at the beach for an hour over her lunch break!

I don’t think WFH involves going to the beach. 🤷‍♀️

@Anewappa HTH as you keep repeatedly asking what my issue is

What white lie????

does your employer always ask you what are you doing over your lunch break?!

DaisyChain505 · 25/06/2026 14:22

If you wouldn’t feel comfortable telling work you probably shouldn’t be doing it.

On another note, I can’t imagine it being comfortable trying to concentrate on work whilst boiling hot and covered in sand!

GoodkneeBadKnee · 25/06/2026 14:22

Do it. I wouldn't think twice. Don't forget your SPF, and have a fab time.

15minutesaday · 25/06/2026 14:22

peachyhead · 25/06/2026 14:20

I'm hardly going to Spain 😂

It the principle [eyeroll]

You clearly want to do it so do it.

You clearly don't have morals or a conscience either, but hey ho.

Anewappa · 25/06/2026 14:22

This is one of the oddest thread.

You want to go to the beach for one hour over your lunch break and then work in a cafe.

why do you need to tell a white lie?

peachyhead · 25/06/2026 14:23

Boomer55 · 25/06/2026 14:21

I don’t think WFH involves going to the beach. 🤷‍♀️

At lunchtime - I am not paid for this hour, it's mine to do with as I please.

To be clear I'm not asking if it's reasonable to go to the beach at lunch. I'm asking if it's reasonable to tell my employer that I need to WFH tomorrow for an appointment, but there is no appointment, I just want a day at home so I can go to the beach at lunchtime.

@Anewappa this will probably be helpful for you also.

But this is the weird thing… the op is only going to the beach over her lunch break and then working in a cafe.

so im failing to see the need to white lie!
