WIBU to work from home to go to the beach?

peachyhead · 25/06/2026 13:14

I live near the beach. Usually can't wfh but occasionally I can e.g. if I am getting work done at home or have an appointment. Would it be unreasonable to ask to wfh for the day tomorrow so I can go to the beach at lunchtime? I might stay out a little longer but will have my phone/laptop with me.

Be careful OP, mumsnet has the highest population of morally superior and officious people known to man 😂

If you can, and you want to and it doesn’t negatively impact anyone else then go for it.

If I wasn’t back to back with meetings for the rest of the afternoon (following my allotted comfort break that Im using to doomscroll in the garden with a cold drink) I would be doing the same thing and making up my hours later!

@HalfColdCoffee Your opening lines made me laugh. You're so right.

Blimey, the OP is very defensive. Where is all the aggression coming from OP, is the sun getting to you?

She's certainly very rude.

She's certainly very rude.

No doubt has a poor relationship with her employer because of this kind of attitude hence the lying

Anewappa · 25/06/2026 15:52

The op has finished her lunch break now
but I suspect still reading and desperate to respond to posts!

PenelopeJoanSterling · 25/06/2026 15:52

Hotspot from my phone

whats your data packeage eg 5 gb etc

peachyhead · 25/06/2026 15:56

Coconutter24 · 25/06/2026 15:04

So why are you here asking if YABU if you don’t care?

Eh? I was responding to the person who said my post might irritate people who are working in the office. This doesn't bother me because it's ridiculous to not make a post as others who are not in the same circumstances as you may get upset.

hey you should be working! Your lunch break finished ages ago

(I know you were still reading desperate to post 😆!)

Imisscoffee2021 · 25/06/2026 16:00

Life is so short and unless you have a job you bounce into with glee, the grind can be long. If you can wfh without it affecting anyone, get all your work done, and then spend lunch break at the beach in the sun, then do it! It's not like you're skiving off!

Such a race to the bottom attitude at times about work, like you have to do the most or else.

AcrossthePond55 · 25/06/2026 15:36

Well, why not? 🤣

My DS1 frequently WF'H' from other places, otherwise he'd get cabin fever. He once phoned me from a beach cabana at a gorgeous ocean-front resort where he'd rented a room for a couple of nights 'just to get away'. As long as your work gets done and your employer can contact you when you're 'on duty', who cares where you work? Oh, and of course, as long as there aren't client privacy concerns.

Well that's nonsense! There are a few (rare) organisations where this is accepted but in the majority, that's not the case.

It's more than just 'as long as your work gets done, who cares where you are?'. Some organisations - but it's hard to think of all that many - might have individuals working entirely separately. Most require interaction in the form of meetings (in-person or online), chat messaging and other contact. Even when global organisations have many employees in fixed, consistent locations, it's challenging to work effectively across continents and time zones. If everyone decides to wander around globally to different locations, with different IT setups and reliability, it would be a nightmare.

The employee might feel they are genuinely doing their work in exactly the same way but it's highly, highly unlikely to be really the case

Furthermore, there are significant tax issues that link to your place of employment and residence - it's not something to be done on a whim. Several large organisations offer such flexibility in a limited way, based on an agreement e.g. being able to work remotely within certain defined conditions for a period of time but that's managed, noted, and done in observance with tax and payroll requirements.

Absolutely nothing to do aside sunbathe and mumsnet until 5pm.

bliss

but telling that you’re supposed to be working but mumsnetting

probably explains why you have to lie to your employer

Why do you think that poster is upset? I don't see any indication of that.

Did you just start the thread to wind posters up? You are being rude in your replies.

Not in the slightest upset

the op has started a silly thread

she has already lied to her employer
but apparently wanted to discuss the philosophical morality of lying to your employer

that is essentially it. Is it ok to lie?

but the op has dressed it up with a load of froth. And
now meant to be at work and mumsnetting. I wonder if she feels guilty about that too?

Their nonstop posts getting increasingly frantic and asking me the same questions repeatedly maybe?

You said you couldn’t care less if people were irritated by what a stranger is doing, so I don’t get why you’d bother asking the original question. If you want to go to the beach go if you don’t then don’t. You don’t need people to tell you if YABU or not

BringBackCatsEyes · 25/06/2026 16:10

peachyhead · 25/06/2026 14:03

Exactly this, I feel a bit bad concealing it from my employer but at the end of the day it's my lunch break! I feel like when I look back on my life I'll think of lovely days spent in the sun, not steadfastly conforming to office rules.

So your manager would say you can't go to the beach during your lunch hour, or they'd say you can't take an extended lunch break?

PenelopeJoanSterling · 25/06/2026 16:11

peachyhead · 25/06/2026 16:00

most excellent then id say go to the beech whenever possible and use the hotspot method

Like I said in my op and several further posts, the issue isn't going to the beach it's that I'm not usually able to wfh unless I have an appointment/reason to be at home

OP posts:
BackToLurk · 25/06/2026 16:15

I'm going to assume you have one of those good employers who only cares if you get all your work done. In which case go to the beach. No one lay on their death bed wishing they'd spent more time in the office.

Yes pretty much. My line manager is more relaxed and defo has that view. It's the company director who prefers us all physically in the office.

YANBU. Life is for living

Restlessdreams1994 · 25/06/2026 16:19

Ask if you can flex your hours to work during the evening when it’s cooler, to help with productivity. No need to mention the beach!

cocog · 25/06/2026 16:19

Ask see what they say, as long as you do your work can’t see the problem with you having a lunch break life is too short take every opportunity to enjoy yours.
