WIBU to work from home to go to the beach?

peachyhead · 25/06/2026 13:14

I live near the beach. Usually can't wfh but occasionally I can e.g. if I am getting work done at home or have an appointment. Would it be unreasonable to ask to wfh for the day tomorrow so I can go to the beach at lunchtime? I might stay out a little longer but will have my phone/laptop with me.

Employee lies about working from home.. that’s the key thing

But she was on her lunch break

Read the thread. She lied about an appointment so she could work from home so she could go to the beach.

At my place as long as an employee is actually working it doesn’t really matter what wfh looks like as long as it’s in the UK. The only other considerations are a secure safe WiFi connection and privacy if calls need to be made especially if with members of the public.

If I told my boss I’d had a two hour lunch break and had been in the sea. She’d say lucky you! As long as I mark my hours honestly on my time sheet it’s not an issue.

Yes but the point is she lied about a non existent personal appointment so she could wfh. She should have been in the office

Far easier to just tell the truth from the start!

Yeah I literally told my boss I went for a swim after and she had no issue lol. Not sure why everyone’s still so bothered by this.

Im not bothered. Im baffled at why you felt the need to post a thread about it. Its such a non issue as demonstrated by your boss's response.

I have read the thread, its a non issue ppl that "work from home" do this sort of thing all the time, its not weird or dishonest its the absolute norm

Edited

I saw your original comment, I searched up the poster and noticed she/he does similar on many other posts and is pointlessly antagonistic.

Hi. What is your relevance on this thread of the hackers movie reference out of interest?

She doesn't "work from home" as normal practice. She faked an appointment and lied in order to do so, then told her boss she went for a swim (which of course he wasn't going to be bothered about) after the non existent appointment.

My boss is a woman

I literally just said ‘can I work from home tomorrow as I have some bits to get done around the house’. The answer was yes. Not sure what the big deal is.

You said previously that you faked an appointment. Now you say you asked to work from home for some vague unspecified reason. Not that it matters much - you've already indicated that telling the truth isn't a priority for you.

I said that was my intention yes. I didn’t have a script for the conversation. I ended up just saying I had some bits to get done at home. Obviously the vagueness wasn’t an issue for my boss.

Don't know why you bothered asking since lying doesn't bother you. Perhaps you just enjoy the attention.

Hi. What is your relevance on this thread of the hackers movie reference out of interest?

the op is "software developer"

i asked

"have you heard of kevin mitnick or seen the film hackers with jonny lee miller and angie jolie ?"

op said

"yes"

so i put

"hack the planet"

as a reference to a quote used a couple of times in the film and as a bit of a light hearted trivia

I was just feeling a bit anxious/weird about asking so wanted to gauge whether it was a reasonable ask. In the end it wasn’t a big deal like I thought it would be. At the end of the day it’s just a post on a forum, no one has to engage if they don’t want to.

You told your boss you went for a swim after the fictional appointment?

Thidnid a very odd thread. You started the thread talking about how “guilty” you felt. I don’t see a whiff of guilt.

You started the thread saying you’d already told the lie but just wanted a thread about the ethics of what you’d done. The ethics of lying @peachyhead ?

you have omitted something here. You lied.

You had already asked
You said you started the thread because you wanted a discussion re the morality of what you’d done
lied?

OP… I think you have bigger issues than being unsure around the morality of lying

just some of the lies you have told on THIs thread @peachyhead ….

Lie 1
My query was more of a moral one as although I'd be getting my work done, I wouldn't tell my employer I had gone to the beach.

vs

I told my employer I went to the beach after the appointment!

Lie 2

I've already said above that I have! I have asked to wfh tomorrow as I have an appointment.

vs

I literally just said ‘can I work from home tomorrow as I have some bits to get done around the house’.

lie 3

but my OP was about whether people think it’s acceptable to lie to my employer that I have an appointment so I could work from home

vs

I was just feeling a bit anxious/weird about asking so wanted to gauge whether it was a reasonable ask.
