WIBU to work from home to go to the beach?

peachyhead · 25/06/2026 13:14

I live near the beach. Usually can't wfh but occasionally I can e.g. if I am getting work done at home or have an appointment. Would it be unreasonable to ask to wfh for the day tomorrow so I can go to the beach at lunchtime? I might stay out a little longer but will have my phone/laptop with me.

A laptop on a beach in 30C? Bonkers.

I did say the laptop would be used in a nearby cafe not literally on the beach.

You cant work from the beach. That's deceiving your employer. Misconduct. Sit in the garden

She deceived her employer by getting to work from home by lying and faking an appointment she didn't have. I'm not sure where she actually works on the back of her dishonesty matters much.

Warmnothot · 27/06/2026 11:14

you were planning to go paddle boarding? So drive to beach, get paddle boarding sorted on water, paddle board, shower, dress, load paddle on to car and go to cafe on beach to work? Surely longer than an hour

anyway who cares about the timing

is lying immoral?
yes

weird you had to ask?
yes

would I want to work in a beach cafe with beach goers coming in for ice creams, sandy, noisy, hot? No but each to their own

Warmnothot · 27/06/2026 11:16

Yesterdays beach jaunt certainly doesn’t seem to have put the Op in a better frame of mind!!

It’s a white lie, have you never told one?

I'm not the one posting on mumsnet trying to defend a white lie though.

Throwing questions back at people when you literally made a thread to ask about lying is juvenile.

No, I've never lied to work about my whereabouts during paid work time.

Like I said, if everyone did it, the country would be even more on it's knees than it already is.

If you're comfortable in your lies, moral compass and don't care about other's opinion, why ask.

It's a term people use to justify deceit. Claiming to have an appointment so that you could work from home when it's not the norm is straight up dishonesty. You faked an appointment. It was a lie.

Quite. A lie is a lie, no matter how dressed up it is.

Warmnothot · 27/06/2026 11:19

Apparently @peachyhead felt guilty about the lie.

Who believes that white lie?! 😂

Once again, I am not paid for my lunch hour.

There was a thread on here a while back where many posters admitted to working on holiday instead of taking it as extra annual leave. Of course none of them were telling porkies and don't skive off to the beach. Ignore. Employers take the piss out of their workers often enough.

You tagged me love, that's how it works 😂. Same as you're invested in my replies.

Of course you did, whilst updating mumsnet 😂.

You're paid for the time you were wfh whilst lying about an appointment.

The lengths you're going to, to try and justify a lie shows you know it's wrong.
If it wasn't, you wouldn't have asked, or would have gone and be done with it.

Still justifying a lie after your fantastic beach day comes across as you not having enjoyed after all.

And had a lovely white lie time at the beach.

This thread is such a bizarre non event.
Employee works from home. Has a lunch break. Does some more work. The end.

MyLimeGuide · 27/06/2026 19:50

Its a funny thread, and amusing one! Im glad people are so into the lunch break on the beach of OP a few days ago, in fact I think it needs to be un picked a bit more into fine details 😎

Employee lies about working from home.. that’s the key thing

At my place as long as an employee is actually working it doesn’t really matter what wfh looks like as long as it’s in the UK. The only other considerations are a secure safe WiFi connection and privacy if calls need to be made especially if with members of the public.

If I told my boss I’d had a two hour lunch break and had been in the sea. She’d say lucky you! As long as I mark my hours honestly on my time sheet it’s not an issue.
