WIBU to work from home to go to the beach?

peachyhead · 25/06/2026 13:14

I live near the beach. Usually can't wfh but occasionally I can e.g. if I am getting work done at home or have an appointment. Would it be unreasonable to ask to wfh for the day tomorrow so I can go to the beach at lunchtime? I might stay out a little longer but will have my phone/laptop with me.

the op is "software developer"

i asked

"have you heard of kevin mitnick or seen the film hackers with jonny lee miller and angie jolie ?"

op said

"yes"

so i put

"hack the planet"

as a reference to a quote used a couple of times in the film and as a bit of a light hearted trivia

Thanks 😀

just some of the lies you have told on THIs thread @peachyhead ….

Lie 1
My query was more of a moral one as although I'd be getting my work done, I wouldn't tell my employer I had gone to the beach.

vs

I told my employer I went to the beach after the appointment!

Lie 2

I've already said above that I have! I have asked to wfh tomorrow as I have an appointment.

vs

I literally just said ‘can I work from home tomorrow as I have some bits to get done around the house’.

lie 3

but my OP was about whether people think it’s acceptable to lie to my employer that I have an appointment so I could work from home

vs

I was just feeling a bit anxious/weird about asking so wanted to gauge whether it was a reasonable ask.

Edited

This is detailed un picking!😂

I guess because I just clicked on “select all” for the Op posts and lie after lie!

You can ask to wfh and go to the beach and stay a bit longer. But not without potential consequences. Whatever your work, whoever your clients are remember there will be someone else who does the work faster, engages with colleagues and clients quicker. That conscientiousness will likely get them repeat business. Your employer and therefore you won’t. But go to the beach by all means. But remember you do compete with other people for work.

dorotel · 28/06/2026 08:48

Definitely not unreasonable. It is your lunch break to do what you want with. Enjoy the beach! Anyone saying anything else is just jealous. Think what a good friend would tell you.

BluesBird19764 · 28/06/2026 09:14

You can do whatever you want with your lunch break.

Gosh this is getting very boring. I never said I had asked already before starting the thread. After seeing several comments confirming this isn’t such a bad thing I asked to wfh, I was just vague about the reason, and it was approved. When I was catching up with my boss that afternoon she asked how my WFH day had been and I told her, I also said I had gone for a swim at lunch. Not quite the gotcha moment you thought.

Yeah, stayed and worked in a cafe with an iced coffee. Was really nice. I also logged on early and logged off late, as I do most days. 😂

If you're finding it boring No one has to engage if they don't want to

I really couldn't care less if people are irritated by what a stranger on the internet is doing. That's like me going online and seeing a random person on holiday or a celebrity living a luxurious life and getting upset about it.

I'm not sure what relevance my job has but I'm a software developer.

The problem is if you take the piss and it results in your employer banning everyone from working from home because you got caught! You cannot work at the beach, it's not worth going down to the beach for an hour for your dinner if you have subtract the time to get there and get back. And if you take unauthorised absence you are being extreme stupid and unfair to your colleagues.

The morality around lying? Correct?

How come you’ve got loads of deletions of posts @peachyhead this morning?

Mitzuko · 28/06/2026 11:29

As long as it doesn't affect your job being done it's a good idea. Many people I know take hours from work for anything including classes. I know because I'm a private teacher and have WFH clients all the time during office hours, they block appointments on the calendar and do whatever. Not my job to judge if the employer is ok with it.

Obviously I hope no one from your office will be around

I think it's the new normal after covid

EvieBB · 28/06/2026 12:08

peachyhead · 25/06/2026 13:16

How so?

because its too hot to be outside in weather like this.....I'd sit in the coolest room with a fan on and the blinds closed....but then that just me :)

A few bits to get done around the house. Which could mean I have things to do at home or that I have someone coming to do work on the house. Like I said I was vague about it.

I can’t see any recent deletions. On Friday I did get notified about new comments but when I clicked on them it said they had been removed by MNHQ for breaching talk guidelines. I haven’t reported anything though.

First statement confirmed you have “already told her I have an appointment”

second statement you asked for the day wfh “to do some bits around the house”

so simple question…. Did you say you had an appointment as you have confirmed once you did?

and as for the deletions… loads of them!! Did you ask for them to be deleted or did HW delete because you were being rude to posters?

Pockett · 28/06/2026 13:29

Could you pretty please answer this @peachyhead

so you understand that lying is immoral?
considering that is why you started the thread… specially to discuss the “morals” (direct quote from none other than you) around this?

I haven’t deleted anything or asked to.

What I have just told you is what I said to my boss, didn’t realise I needed to share verbatim. Yes I understand lying is immoral, I am also an adult and know that sometimes people do tell harmless lies. My lie didn’t affect anyone other than meant I got more done than usual so I don’t see the harm there.

I’m not really going to continue discussing this as the issue has come and gone. Not sure what the criticism for starting a moral debate is about, I haven’t forced anyone to engage with the thread.

Is this really affecting your weekend that much?
