After decades of disappointment I've pretty much given up on watching England with any hope.

I have Scottish in laws and love the place anyway but after seeing all the videos of the tartan army in Boston I'd so love for them to win ( however unlikely that may be!)

No. We are the best country in the world and all are welcome. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Didn’t they put a load of fairy liquid in a fountain and make the place look a total mess?

And if you call English football ‘disappointment’ you’re in for a treat with Scotland 😬😬

LuckyHazelFox · 16/06/2026 21:40

You can want.

NotAnotherScarf · 16/06/2026 21:41

I understand your sentiments...but do watch the video of Scotland fans in 1977 at Wembley. The media has painted a rosey picture of these lovely Scottish people in their wee kilts and hats... whilst churning out the view that the English are like the hordes of Atilla the Hun. Whilst the huge majority of Scotland fans are well behaved, I have personal experience of the opposite.

Ach well, don't get your hopes up, Scottish football is a source of constant disappointment to those of us who support it. I think all us Scots are hoping for at the moment is to at least make it past the first round of the world cup! 😂

Edit: sorry I meant to reply to the op?! I'm tired tonight ...

countrylife00 · 16/06/2026 21:49

Let’s hear how many Scots want England to win?
I think you know the answer.
We were living in Scotland when they last got in the World Cup and my daughter was friendly with one of the players sons, at nursery. All those Scottish Mums tried so hard to befriend the Mother, but the wee lad made a bee line for the only English child in the nursery!

fruitandbarley · 16/06/2026 21:49

To be clear this I know they are highly unlikely to win, and nowhere did I say that all the fans are well behaved, it would just be nice to see the ones that are so happy, from everything I've read so far, which obviously isn't everything, they're doing Scotland proud.

No but don’t kid yourself you’d get the same in reverse.

Have you lived there, as an English person, during a World Cup?

Why don’t you do England proud then?

Not just highly unlikely to win- not a chance of winning, no offence but it’s nice to see happy fans. England, at least, have a chance- you can always support both.

miniaturepixieonacid · 16/06/2026 21:56

YANBU to support whoever you like but personally, I don't understand not supporting, in order: 1) the country you identify as being from, 2) the country you live in abd 3) the country you feel a connection with for any reason.

Seems like Scotland is a 3) for you. But if that criteria makes it a 1) for you then of course YANBU. They're your feelings.

countrylife00 · 16/06/2026 21:54

Cause I can't afford to go to America.

I'm still supporting them, it's not like I'm going to be upset if they don't progress, was just saying it was nice seeing the vids of how happy the Scots were.

Yes, half a century ago some men were dicks 🤣

My partner has never had an anti-English sentiment expressed to him since moving here. The only rude people he’s met were from Surrey, and who told him he had seriously downgraded by moving here. So that was nice.

KnickerlessFlannel · 16/06/2026 22:00

Yes, i agree. Would be great for Scotland to win (I have them in the sweepstake!!)

FloodlightsOnTheSquare · 16/06/2026 22:02

Oh mate 🤣 @KnickerlessFlannel

We’re absolutely shite but fine with it.

DidntLikeTheEnding · 16/06/2026 22:03

Aw thanks, but we really really won't! You're very welcome in the Tartan Army though!

I guess I am the opposite. I was a nursing sister and no one spoke to me for weeks. They made it clear they didn’t want an English nurse on their ward, let alone managing them. However it was the 90s, so things might have improved.

FloodlightsOnTheSquare · 16/06/2026 22:05

Wow @countrylife00i sincerely hope that’s the case. How awful.
