After decades of disappointment I've pretty much given up on watching England with any hope.

I have Scottish in laws and love the place anyway but after seeing all the videos of the tartan army in Boston I'd so love for them to win ( however unlikely that may be!)

YANBU. Support who you want to.

I’m the opposite way round. Scottish born & bred. I would love to be proud of my country but I can’t be because I absolutely detest the embarrassingly small-minded, chippy ‘Anyone But England’ mentality of so many Scottish people. Which is who I’m supporting England. A proud nation which doesn’t have a pathetic inferiority complex. At least we might win a couple of games…

fruitandbarley · 16/06/2026 21:57

Cause I can't afford to go to America.

I'm still supporting them, it's not like I'm going to be upset if they don't progress, was just saying it was nice seeing the vids of how happy the Scots were.

Um. You said you wanted Scotland to win.
I am still waiting for a single Scottish person to say they want England to win……
I might have a long wait.

The crossposting there was brutal 🤣🤣

Secretseverywhere · 16/06/2026 22:13

I’m Scottish and have rooted for England since the last time we made it, so it’s nice there is cross border support.

I’ve quite enjoyed seeing clips of the tartan army abroad, it’s been really positive. We have a couple of tough teams ahead so would be impressed if make it out of group stages though.

SaySomethingMan · 16/06/2026 22:16

Yeah that’s never gonna happen. Not in a million years. And I say this as someone who loves Scotland and wouldn’t mind if they did better than England. But to outright win it. Ha!

GrievanceList · 16/06/2026 22:18

NotAnotherScarf · 16/06/2026 21:41

I understand your sentiments...but do watch the video of Scotland fans in 1977 at Wembley. The media has painted a rosey picture of these lovely Scottish people in their wee kilts and hats... whilst churning out the view that the English are like the hordes of Atilla the Hun. Whilst the huge majority of Scotland fans are well behaved, I have personal experience of the opposite.

Seriously! Almost 50 years ago and this is the best you can do. Talk about bearing grudges. 🤣

Happyjoe · 16/06/2026 22:23

I live near 3 pubs. Really near. I have never liked football, and now I absolutely hate it because there's nothing to like about 100 drunken morons, (thinking they're highly original and witty), on the street singing 'It's coming home' over and over again, not knowing any more of the lyrics.

Oh, that and the glass smashing, the knock down ginger by 50 something year old blokes and them urinating in the street or against my door.

With the later opening times, I hope, truly hope England and Scotland are knocked out fast! Yeah, I know. I am a miserable sod!!

SusanChurchouse · 16/06/2026 22:24

Wanting Scotland to win is a perfectly reasonable thing as from a narrative POV it would be incredible. I think wanting any small team to triumph over the favourites is a normal natural instinct in sport. It’s not going to happen, obviously.

RichPetuniaAgain · 16/06/2026 22:24

Hey, I’m Scottish and always back England in their tournaments because at least they get there 🤣. I think there is a false impression of Scotland as the reality is it’s fast becoming Nedland, which is a huge worry 😢

Poor you. None of that where I live.

Scotland ain’t gonna win

And did you see the video of the Scots dancing with the Argentina fan?

Jamino · 16/06/2026 22:46

Support whoever you fancy. It’s not that deep.

Catsandcheese · 16/06/2026 22:47

I think the tartan army are pretty amazing. They raise money for charities local to where they visit - £10k to one children’s charity in Boston and others.
Scotland will be very unlikely to move from the group stage but their support knows that and is still happy to follow. the social media from Boston is amazing. Everyone is having a great time it seems.

What rubbish.

Actually, it’s not rubbish. It’s reality.

England fan here but also massive Villa, would love Scotland to go far for our John McGinn! Fucking legend

If you really really want decades of disappointment of the very highest level, then by all means support Scotland. The disappointment will not disappoint.

KnittyKnotty · 16/06/2026 22:56

I think the difference is Scotland have won one match, probably won't win anymore but that one win has given a whole nation enough euphoria to last a lifetime.

England could win every match except the final one and it will be like the world has ended. All the players will be slagged off in the media, the manager will be hung drawn and quartered, nasty memes will appear all over SM, if any non-white player misses a penalty the racists will be all over it and the fans will probably go on a riot vandalising and wrecking the place.

If I was interested in football, I would get behind Scotland.

I live near about 20 pubs in a city centre. None of that here either.

Tell is you’re not interested in football without telling us you’re not interested in football. You know England did get tho the final last time right? And the world didn’t end. And England women won the euros twice. Which was also rather agreeable. I think if you actually knew any real football fans you might feel differently.

👋 I would be pleased for them. The 'anyone except England' thing is usually said in jest where I live.

BitOutOfPractice · 16/06/2026 23:05

Ok here it is from me. I love football. I’m also far more interested in my league team than England. So that’s my stance.

Im half Scottish but I was born in England, I live in England and I support England. I’m so so tired of the decades of ABE “banter” that I have totally gone off the “support the home nation” rhetoric I was brought up on and don’t care any more about Scotland than I do about Azerbaijan or Curaçao. No matter how jolly their fans are.
