After decades of disappointment I've pretty much given up on watching England with any hope.

I have Scottish in laws and love the place anyway but after seeing all the videos of the tartan army in Boston I'd so love for them to win ( however unlikely that may be!)

Scotland isn’t defined by Rangers and Celtic, and pretending otherwise is just ignorance.

Every country has louts around derby matches — that’s not a Scottish problem, it’s a football problem. Living in England, I see firsthand how some people here show a level of bitterness toward Scotland that’s honestly embarrassing.

The Tartan Army is known worldwide for their good behaviour and the charity work they do while supporting their team. Yet there’s always someone — usually English — desperate to criticise them. It’s unfair, it’s outdated, and it says more about the critic than it does about Scotland.

I understand your sentiments...but do watch the video of Scotland fans in 1977 at Wembley. The media has painted a rosey picture of these lovely Scottish people in their wee kilts and hats... whilst churning out the view that the English are like the hordes of Atilla the Hun. Whilst the huge majority of Scotland fans are well behaved, I have personal experience of the opposite.

Is 1977 the new 1966? Grin

YANBU OP! DH is English but has lived in Scotland for many years and is definitely rooting for us. It’s so nice walking around and seeing all the flags, the kids are chatting about it all the time, it’s just a nice thing for the country. No one expects us to get very far but just being there is a great time! It’s hard not to get swept up in it all really.

NotInvolved · 17/06/2026 11:50

And even then it's a minority of Celtic and Rangers fans who cause issues. True, both clubs have violent and sectarian groups associated with them but I know plenty of people who go regularly who are passionate about the football but are absolutely not drunken thugs. It's patently ridiculous to judge an entire country's fans on the basis of the actions of a small proportion of people associated with 2 clubs. That's like judging all England fans by the standards of say Millwall or Leeds supporters in the 80s. And let's not kid ourselves that football hooliganism is unique to these shores either.

LlynTegid · 17/06/2026 11:52

Nothing wrong with wanting a particular country to win the tournament who is not your home country. You can admire particular players, the manager, or any other reason.

Scotland or England won't win, don't get your hopes up.

I guess I am the opposite. I was a nursing sister and no one spoke to me for weeks. They made it clear they didn’t want an English nurse on their ward, let alone managing them. However it was the 90s, so things might have improved.

I work with loads of nhs, social workers and admin and many of them are English, no one cares or treats them any differently, what you’ve said seems bizarre to me, are you sure it was because you are English? There’s literally people working here from all over the world

Livelovebehappy · 16/06/2026 23:47

England all the way for me. But I do feel sorry for Scotland. They just never seem to be successful at any sport. It must be frustrating for them….

Hurling, golf, athletics tennis?

Pistachiocake · 17/06/2026 17:10

Of course not, all live in Britain.

lebin · 17/06/2026 17:28

We’ve these things I think it’s fine to want another team to win but it would be unreasonable to want England to lose. If you want Scotland to win their matches and do well because you have a connection to the country/ people that’s nice. I have a friend with a Scottish parent - they have lived in England all their lives but still love Scotland. It irks me that they are desperate for England to lose everything (every match, every sport etc) 😂

Well yes but I don’t think the majority of Scottish people feel British. I certainly never think of myself as anything other than Scottish.

Retunue · 17/06/2026 17:37

Of course that’s not unreasonable. I’m English and I’d love Scotland to do well; as long as they lose if we play them!

And it’s all academic because neither Scotland or England are going to win the World Cup.

Savvysix1984 · 17/06/2026 17:43

I’m Irish (so no skin in the game) but I’m supporting Scotland, mainly cos I love the country and Robertson is their captain and Liverpool is my team. My English dh is a bit disappointed I’m not supporting England.

BuildbyNumbere · 17/06/2026 17:55

YABU … they don’t stand a chance and they hate England with a passion! Why would you want someone to win when they want nothing more than your country to lose.

BuildbyNumbere · 17/06/2026 17:56

countrylife00 · 16/06/2026 22:07

Um. You said you wanted Scotland to win.
I am still waiting for a single Scottish person to say they want England to win……
I might have a long wait.

Hell will freeze over before that happens!

They don’t hate England they hate the English media and it’s in jest, English and Scottish get on, it’s an age old sports rivalry that’s a bit of fun

darksideofthetoon · 17/06/2026 18:22

SaySomethingMan · 16/06/2026 22:16

Yeah that’s never gonna happen. Not in a million years. And I say this as someone who loves Scotland and wouldn’t mind if they did better than England. But to outright win it. Ha!

My 6 year old daughter keeps asking if Scotland might win The World Cup. I don’t know how many times I can explain the zero probability of it actually happening. I’ve got more chance of being wealthier than Musk this time next year.

But that’s part of the appeal, the underdog and the dream of it happening… the biggest party since the year 2000!

Now England on the other hand have an outside chance. Keep it low expectations and let the lads get on. Would also be a phenomenal thing to see so best of luck to them.

Don’t worry. We wouldn’t support Ireland, so no problems there….

Well having lived in Scotland, I totally understand why they are so jealous of the English lol.

This was in the late 80s and 90s.
i moved up from London and could not believe it. I had worked with people from everywhere, but in Aberdeen it was a different world.

😂😂😂 I live in Glasgow.
I’m not talking about the old firm, I’m talking about Scotland fans out in the world, compared to England fans. We aren’t hated, you are. There’s a reason for that.

I will crack the jokes! 😂😂😂😂

That’s very rude on a thread with a lot of Scottish people.

Islandgirl68 · 17/06/2026 18:42

@fruitandbarley yes that would be nice, but highly unlikely, but we can dream.

Islandgirl68 · 17/06/2026 18:47

@countrylife00 maybe bacause we would never hear the end of it. 1966 was 60 years ago and ee still hesr about is as if England was the best in the world.
