After decades of disappointment I've pretty much given up on watching England with any hope.

I have Scottish in laws and love the place anyway but after seeing all the videos of the tartan army in Boston I'd so love for them to win ( however unlikely that may be!)

Poor you. None of that where I live.

Luckily we've bought a do upper house, so by the time the Euro's come around be far away! I may even go back to hoping someone in the UK does well... :-)

I live near about 20 pubs in a city centre. None of that here either.

Show off! Grins.
I am opposite one, it's about 7 meters away. One down the road, about 30 meters and one to my left, about 10 meters.

To be clear this I know they are highly unlikely to win, and nowhere did I say that all the fans are well behaved, it would just be nice to see the ones that are so happy, from everything I've read so far, which obviously isn't everything, they're doing Scotland proud.

Let’s see if the same is true by the end of the competition

Striveforcompetence · 17/06/2026 00:11

What? Tennis, cycling, golf, judo… we do well at plenty of sports. And our fans don’t act like total louts.

Have you ever been to a Celtic / Rangers match?

Sorry but please do go and then say Scottish football fans are well behaved.

@countrylife00nope. Happy resident here - doesn’t suit everyone but maybe that’s for the best 😂

Yes. We went off to the U.S. after Aberdeen. A breath of fresh air.

Of course you're not going to find many Scots wanting England to win. Do you know nothing about football?

England and Scotland have one of the oldest and most traditional rivalries in football.

If Scotland were regularly competing at England's level in major tournaments, plenty of England fans would be cheering for their elimination too. The idea that England fans support Scotland is a myth. When people say it, it's either out of pity, because Scotland rarely gets far in these tournaments, or simply to gaslight.

But Scotland don’t care. They are just happy to be in the game this time, and yes once out will happily support anyone but their rivals, just to wind England up.

The oddest tithing about it is why on earth does England care and take it so personally 🤷🏻‍♀️ Football rivalries aren't always logical, but that's part of what makes them rivalries.

This post was based on Op saying she wanted Scotland to win.
Of course most English people want England to win. And because we are accustomed to getting in tournaments all the time, it would be extremely rare for anyone to even mention Scotland.

The old firm thugs are a world away from the tartan army-they’re an embarrassment to humankind, never mind football

And yet I don't recall Scotland ever being ordered to play matches behind closed doors because of the behaviour of their fans.

HoraceCope · 17/06/2026 05:58

in a local pub in 1992 in england, they werent even showing the scotland match,
miserable buggers

Sartre · 17/06/2026 06:45

Classic British underdog sentimentality! I grew up with a French dad so always supported them but never publicly, can you imagine going to school saying that?! So I had shirts for both and only wore one at the weekend…

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 17/06/2026 06:53

I love Scott McTominay and his crazy Naples glow up so I also want them to do well despite being English.

motorlady · 17/06/2026 08:38

summeronthehorizon · 17/06/2026 00:05

Ah the Scottish fans look like they are having the best time over in Boston. In any big group there will always be arse holes but on the whole I imagine it’s all good fun.

I am Scottish and first and foremost, Scotland have my backing. But I also want England to win if Scotland don’t. Im in the minority - but I’m guessing the OP is in the minority too! Everyone knows about Scotland v England rivalry!

Also 1966 ruined it for England. They sickened everyone by how much they went on about it and still go on about it.

Same here. I hate football with a vengeance but as a Scot Scotland will always have my support in any sport. I live in England and England are my adopted team (apart from when they’re playing Scotland).
I’m with you re 1966.
My husband is English

Feetballislife · 17/06/2026 08:49

Would love Scotland to win! They have about as much a chance as England do, to be fair!

SaySomethingMan · 17/06/2026 08:51

KnittyKnotty · 16/06/2026 22:56

I think the difference is Scotland have won one match, probably won't win anymore but that one win has given a whole nation enough euphoria to last a lifetime.

England could win every match except the final one and it will be like the world has ended. All the players will be slagged off in the media, the manager will be hung drawn and quartered, nasty memes will appear all over SM, if any non-white player misses a penalty the racists will be all over it and the fans will probably go on a riot vandalising and wrecking the place.

If I was interested in football, I would get behind Scotland.

💯
England suppprters always think England is better than they really are. And there are many racists in the country so that doesn’t help with the attack on the black players.

The pundits are the worst at exaggerating England. The way they dismiss other nations is so arrogant and shameful.

However I like this squad and i’m looking forward to what they can do. I don’t think they’ll win it but hopefully they’ll go far.

England all the way for me. But I do feel sorry for Scotland. They just never seem to be successful at any sport. It must be frustrating for them….

On the contrary, it gives us licence to not give that much of a shit, and just party for as long as it lasts 🤷‍♀️

Ah, don’t do that mate. The vast majority of fans are nothing like those wankers; that rivalry has a very different provenance, as you well know.

Ang69 · 17/06/2026 09:36

countrylife00 · 16/06/2026 22:07

Um. You said you wanted Scotland to win.
I am still waiting for a single Scottish person to say they want England to win……
I might have a long wait.

I'm Scottish and always support England every time including this World Cup. Of course, I'm also supporting Scotland but well aware we probably won't make it out of the 1st round.

I hate the small mindedness of people who support anyone else but England. I've lived all over the UK including England and Wales and always viewed them as my country, the UK. I remember being told in Wales to go back to my own country as I was taking a job from the Welsh, there will always be people like this, best to ignore.

Good luck to England tonight!!

Don't forget Curling, we are good at that too!

Purplecatshopaholic · 17/06/2026 09:46

Scotland won’t win. Don’t be daft, lol. But we’ll have great fun while it lasts - we know how to party, if not play good football, lol. I’m getting into it, in spite of myself as my wee cul-de-sac is getting decked out with window displays thanks to the kids. There was a group of neighbours kids in their back garden practicing (murdering) Flower of Scotland last night..

😂😂😂 I live in Glasgow.
I’m not talking about the old firm, I’m talking about Scotland fans out in the world, compared to England fans. We aren’t hated, you are. There’s a reason for that.

RichPetuniaAgain · 16/06/2026 22:24

Hey, I’m Scottish and always back England in their tournaments because at least they get there 🤣. I think there is a false impression of Scotland as the reality is it’s fast becoming Nedland, which is a huge worry 😢

I know I am probably being totally stupid, here, but what's 'Nedland'?

FloodlightsOnTheSquare · 17/06/2026 10:39

I guess it’s what English people call a chav? We might say, och he’s such a ned 🤷‍♀️

Also it’s not true. Good and bad, like in every single country the world over.
