AIBU to resent neighbours doing DIY on bank holiday Monday?

It feels like every time the stars align and we all get the day off and the weather is good, the morons appear with their power tools/bonfires.

AIBU to expect them to knock it off for the day so for once we can all just bloody relax? This racket has been going on for 3 hours now and shows no sign of stopping (neighbour with his work bench and drills out)

Genuine question OP do you and your family all work full time?

It’s my absolute prerogative to do DIY all of Christmas Day, and at 3am. Should I do this?

You can do what you like in your own home, whenever you want. If you’re repeatedly disturbing other people’s peace, they could complain to the local council, who might follow it up if it’s between 11pm and 7am.

Yes, both DH and I.

I'm going to get the hose out and water the garden soon. Hope no one is going to complain about that?

Nobody is going to follow up a noise complaint for 1 day of drilling on Xmas Day. Should I do that? Or would it be a dick move?

Our neighbours have been renovating for a year. They’re now doing the landscaping- endless noise. I’m so close to making a noise complaint to the council.

No they aren’t, which is why I said repeatedly.

If you want yeah.

I am too busy having fun with my family on Xmas day to give a monkeys what next door are doing with their drill, or to get my own drill out. I’d likely save that for a Sunday or bank holiday Monday when I had less going on… but whatever floats your boat 🤷🏻‍♀️

Oh God. We had that at our last house - a renovation taking 2.5 years. Eventually a neighbour lost their shit and posted a very long and angry message in our road WhatsApp group (they were disabled and housebound and really struggling with the noise). People just really don’t think, it’s all me me me.

Will it be as noisy as a drill? Will you be doing it for 5 solid hours?

I'll light a bonfire to add to the ambience.

Can do if you want to spoil your neighbours washing, just to have a personal joke with yourself. A bit sad though.

Christ OP, you seriously need to let this go now.

You're so angry and you've been banging on about something you can do nothing about, for over 2 hours! 😳

Life really is too short for this shit.

You don’t think people are too busy at Xmas to get their drill out, blimey! I wouldn’t much fancy Xmas at yours then.

Xmas is probably the one bank holiday when I genuinely wouldn’t know what was going on elsewhere, we’re all indoors, music playing, doors and windows shut, playing games, chatting etc. Drilling would be irritating
on a day when I’m sat in silence indoors alone, or trying to sunbathe. On Xmas day it’s carnage in my house.

Tableforjoan · 25/05/2026 18:27

Our neighbours builders so not diy are still drilling hammering breaking tiles and god knows what.

cravingicedwater · 25/05/2026 18:27

Is it only bank holiday Mondays where it matters? How do you feel about DIY on Good Friday? What if Christmas falls on a Wednesday?

Im the same, hot weather and free time = noisy c*

Have to leave my house and find somewhere else for peace and quiet

Scarlettpixie · 25/05/2026 18:31

My neighbours can do what they like today. It’s too hot for me to be outside. I did hear someone mowing around 9am. Now I can smell bbq and hear chatter. I am really lucky as I have 5 neighbours with a bit adjoining mine and they’re all pretty good. On Friday while I was sitting out (had a 4 day weekend), one of them was pressure washing for a few hours. I have done a bit of loud sweeping and hoeing of the patio on Sunday but less than an hour. Most of the noise has been chatter, music, dogs and kids but no one takes the piss.

I think when you live near people noise is to be expected. Some are going to take the nice weather and extra day off as a chance to get stuff done. I think its just luck it hasn’t happened here. Maybe too hot for most of my neighbours.

Twisterlollies · 25/05/2026 17:33

Oh come off it, most people have the weekend and get home from work by 6pm.

Many people will not be having a summer holiday this year, and these few days off with family and children (especially when the weather is amazing) is a rare chance to unwind and have some relaxation time.

Ruining it with power tools because putting up a shelf is ‘urgent’ is a dickhead move. It just is.

Most people do not have weekends or get home at 6pm. What a narrow minded person you are.
Many people work shift patterns and work weekends. Get out of your bubble OP.

MyLimeGuide · 25/05/2026 18:33

I literally love the sound of power tools and DIY projects going on it makes me happy to hear people using their hands, building things, improving their living spaces and being creative 😍 for some people (me included) its a hobby and hobbies are generally undertaken on bank holidays.

I just googled it. 80% of people do not work at weekends.

I feel exactly the same about all bank holidays which make up a grand total of 2% of the year.

I’m sure they can find another day.

I think this is one of those threads where everyone pretend to be way more chilled about something than they would actually be if it happened to them.

One of the neighbours backing on to us has been using an angle grinder every day this weekend for hours at a time. He does some ear splitting grinding, stops for a minute or so then starts up again. This has been going on for 6 hours today so far. I can't be bothered to even try saying anything as anybody so un self aware as to not think this might annoy people wanting to use their gardens is unlikely to be receptive.

I feel for you. It’s stop start here too. Just as I thought he’d stopped it would start up again.

I just walked to the local shop and he barged past me in an aggressive manner on the pavement. I feel like he’s seen this thread but he can’t have, surely? 😂

No, but I've had plenty of work done to my house over the last 4 years, I've still plenty more to do. As do my neighbours on both sides. One has yappy little dogs who carry on for hours. If I wanted perfect peace I'd live in a field.
