AIBU to resent neighbours doing DIY on bank holiday Monday?

It feels like every time the stars align and we all get the day off and the weather is good, the morons appear with their power tools/bonfires.

AIBU to expect them to knock it off for the day so for once we can all just bloody relax? This racket has been going on for 3 hours now and shows no sign of stopping (neighbour with his work bench and drills out)

prize for the most sexist comment I’ve read today

You got it and your point is ?
Are you one of the said boys by any chance?

Twisterlollies · 25/05/2026 17:36

No because that’s an ordinary working day or a day you sort of expect this kind of thing to happen. Bank holidays, Christmas, Easter Sunday = dick move!

It’s literally just an extra weekend day. I can’t imagine being this miserable

Twisterlollies · 25/05/2026 17:25

I don’t care! There’s a handful of bank holidays and hundreds of other days to do this shit.

Some jobs take several days to complete. A dry bank holiday in spring is the perfect opportunity to do jobs like this.

Last spring bank holiday we built a poly tunnel and neighbours put up fencing. I think the year before that was them building timber raised beds and is laying paths.

DIY on a dry spring bank holiday is perfectly normal.

I refuse to mow the lawns etc on a Sunday out of respect for my neighbours wanting to sit in the garden but it isn’t reciprocated unfortunately

Mamofgirls · 25/05/2026 17:39

My husband works away, he’s been away for 6 weeks and is home for 2 days before going back away to work for another 4 weeks tomorrow. He’s been fixing our front door today...with tools! Should we wait another 4 weeks to fix it because it’s a sunny day? 🤣

Also I’m pretty sure half the people doing DIY jobs outside today aren’t exactly happy doing it in this heat, but have no other times to do it, due to weather or work commitments.

Yes but remember hatred of all men is tolerated on Mumsnet; come to think of it it’s obligatory!

SittingNextToIt · 25/05/2026 16:39

Wow. Would it be equally okay then to point out those girls who’ve never grown up continue as adults to play dress up (of human daughters rather than dolls) and putting together tea parties and lunches (real rather than fake)? No? Not the same? Why not?

But dressing up and having tea parties don't make lots of irritating noise do they? 🙄

I’d be miserable if I had nothing better to do today than fix something!

My neighbours do this every single time, every weekend, every bank hols as soon as the clock hits 7am they are off. Drilling, mowing, strimming, angle grinding.... absolutely does my head in!

Sympathies! The strength of feeling here is such that I’m guessing he saw the comments and stopped 😂

I don't hate men at all, just the utter knobheads who MN are always discussing who are cheating, abusing their wives and partners, shit fathers and the ilk.

It would be intolerant if I complained on a random dreary weekend, or before 8pm. But there are masses of gardens here with people trying to enjoy some sunshine and loud drilling for hours is very selfish.

Errr , I don’t see how this is selfish ? When would you rather they did it? 0900hrs tomorrow, as opposed to being at work ? Oh wait ! Remote workers would complain, too , wouldn’t they ? Go buy yourself a farm in the middle of nowhere. That’d help.

PennyWorth · 25/05/2026 17:45

In my area no noisy DIY is allowed on Sundays and Bank holidays.😀

PicknStick · 25/05/2026 17:45

Twisterlollies · 25/05/2026 16:47

They should do it across normal weekends, or when it rains (which is 80% of the time). Today is clearly a day for sunshine and relaxation for people.

This weekend is the first weekend we’ve had this year to get some outside jobs done! Normal weekends have been used for ferrying kids to hobbies, weekly shop, running our business etc..

The sunshine and bank holiday forces us to make time to sort the garden so that our family can enjoy our outside space in the summer.

We don’t all have time to sit our backsides down and relax.

Unless you're sat out there in complete silence, you'd be annoying people too.
Music, or even just chatting, is louder than you think it is and neighbours will hear you, does that make you just as selfish?

So you think I shouldn’t speak between 8pm and 7am? Because it’s as bad as drilling? Ok then!

"It feels like every time the stars align and we all get the day off and the weather is good, the morons appear with their power tools/bonfires."

How intolerant of you. People with different hobbies or a bank holiday project are not morons.

If you live in a street/ estate there will be people doing all sorts of things. ...

It's not intolerant 😂. One of our neighbours is the same. It's literally every single time there is a nice day. Every single time. It completely ruins the peace. Sometimes would be fine - jobs need doing, some have different hobbies etc but all the time on nice days? It's just rude. If you know you have a particularly noisy hobby, be considerate of other people - that doesn't mean never do it, it just means don't do it during every daylight hour on every day when it's beautiful weather!

I live in a village. It's been beautifully quiet all weekend. Not a mower, not a strimmer and ( remarkably) not a bonfire either. So, so lovely. Do feel for people who live with noisy neighbours

ilovesooty · 25/05/2026 17:52

Twisterlollies · 25/05/2026 17:23

No thankfully he’s stopped. I’m going to park our car outside his house to make it difficult for him to lay the tool bench out tomorrow. Ha

Tomorrow isn't a bank holiday.

So have you actually spoken to him about it or not?

FieryA · 25/05/2026 17:52

Twisterlollies · 25/05/2026 16:44

I just think it’s part of the fact many men are selfish and simple don’t consider the needs of those around them before launching into whatever they want to do. Admittedly I’ve never seen a woman get power tools out at an inconvenient time.

Edited

Isn't it possible that the woman of the house asked the man to get the tasks done? Why assume that the man is out to inconvenience you? Many people finish pending jobs on holidays. There is no rule that everyone has to be out in the sun relaxing.

boredandgrand · 25/05/2026 17:53

Move somewhere with no neighbours.

Dollymylove · 25/05/2026 17:53

LadyTable · 25/05/2026 16:48

Or maybe it's because too many women expect men to do the DIY?

'Playing with toys' is a strange way to describe home maintenance.

Yeah c'mon girls get that patio laid after you've levelled the ground. Those slabs dont weigh that much ya know!!
