AIBU to resent neighbours doing DIY on bank holiday Monday?

It feels like every time the stars align and we all get the day off and the weather is good, the morons appear with their power tools/bonfires.

AIBU to expect them to knock it off for the day so for once we can all just bloody relax? This racket has been going on for 3 hours now and shows no sign of stopping (neighbour with his work bench and drills out)

Many jobs can’t be done in the rain.
We were out there using our saws and sanders this morning.
We worked from 9am to 1pm then knocked off for the day.

I wasn’t aware bank holidays are the only days it doesn’t rain. Thanks for that

Most people are doing them in the garage.

A garage creates a bull horn effect, the noise of the tools is amplified.

For them maybe! But it’s their noise!

No, for the neighbourhood, that’s what a bull horn does, it projects the sound louder and further than it would have been if done outside instead of in a garage with the door open.

I was replying to your opinion that this work can be done in the rain. Much of it cannot be done in the rain. Bank holidays are a day off work. Days off work with no rain are opportunities to get home maintenance done, especially bigger jobs that take 2-3 days.

Edited

There are many weekend days when it doesn’t rain. It’s very selfish.

Not that many. If you want quiet, go to a park.

If you work fulltime you only have weekends to do jobs around the house. Today is a long weekend so might as well take advantage.

This 😅
Work 6 days a week and have two kids under 4. Respectfully, I'll be doing my DIY whenever I actually get the time 🫠

How much bloody DIY is normal?! I think we use a saw or drill about once every 2 years. Do any of you finish these renovations and improvements or do you just continue indefinitely forever?!

As above- I work 6 days a week and have 2 very young children. Some of us aren't blessed with time or houses that are 'finished'. We've got a do-er upper, theres basically a never ending list of jobs that inevitably only get done on Sundays (day off) or bank holidays. And that's if the kids play ball.

Honestly this thread, you would think May Bank Holiday Monday was the DIY equivalent of the Purge 😂😂

Some absolute arsehole has been using an angle grinder or cutting stone or something similar now for three straight days over the bank holiday weekend. Selfish tossers. One day, fine. All three days so nobody can be in their gardens or open their windows on the hottest weekend of the year?

Are you also my neighbour?! My post upthread details this exact delightful experience 😆 absolutely hideous noise isn't it

SparklyGlitterballs · 25/05/2026 21:00

Twisterlollies · 25/05/2026 17:17

I think it does.

It’s like doing it at 3am because the person works night shifts. It’s still rude and antisocial. You should be considerate of the needs of the majority.

Whose to say the majority want quiet? Round my way there was loads going on. I could hear DIY, lawnmowers, hedge cutters, kids laughing and shrieking in their paddling pools. If I need something doing, it gets done. I’m not putting my life on hold for others. If you want quiet, don’t have neighbours.

I mean how entitled of you?! So you don’t have any jobs to do but others do. We both work full time, have got back from a camping weekend, we’re abroad the week before and have guests tomorrow. Damn right we were mowing the lawn! And doing all our jobs today

Ilovemyshed · 25/05/2026 21:13

My twat neighbour’s kid had loud reggae playing. I was planning a quiet day so I decided to jetwash instead 😉

Yes you sound like you’ve been working very hard indeed, and have no choice but BH Monday

The fact that B&Q, Wickes, Jewsons and Screwfix exist, and are usually busy, suggests that many people pick up a saw or drill more often than once every two years.

We live in a 200 year old house. There’s always something that needs doing. Today was fixing some wiring that the squirrels had got to and making up some new barge boards for the garage. Next weekend will hopefully be replacing the garage roof.

They should do it across normal weekends, or when it rains (which is 80% of the time). Today is clearly a day for sunshine and relaxation for people.

It sounds very much as if they should plan all their projects around you and your preferences…..

Ditto your neighbours and their lawnmowers and drills quite likely.

Those boys who have never grown up love playing with noisy toys don't they?
Don't see many women messing about with angle grinders, power tools and being anal about their lawn stripes.
Maybe it's because women have more interesting things to do.🤔

Oh, you don't know what you're missing. I love spending quality time with my power tools.

Or maybe they are just getting on with long overdue DIY because it's the first day they've had off in a while because they are usually working all hours to keep the women happy?

Or maybe its the first day they've had off with decent weather in a while so need to get overdue DIY done?

Not everyone has the luxury of sitting back and doing nothing on a bank holiday.

No, that's your ideal

Most people I know, people in my space worked today

For vast amounts of the working population, bank holidays arent days off , they are just days added to holiday entitlement to be taken when it suits the company

I worked today, then came home and whilst I mowed, DH got the strimmer out

And seeing as the farmers are bringing in the silage - no one was exceptionally disturbed

I know in two days when the silage is lifted the slurry will be spread, means good weather, and its absolutely stinking outside. I can hardly say the the farmers - hold off a week till the bad weather comes back.

Not everyone runs to your personal timetable
