AIBU to resent neighbours doing DIY on bank holiday Monday?

It feels like every time the stars align and we all get the day off and the weather is good, the morons appear with their power tools/bonfires.

AIBU to expect them to knock it off for the day so for once we can all just bloody relax? This racket has been going on for 3 hours now and shows no sign of stopping (neighbour with his work bench and drills out)

Those boys who have never grown up love playing with noisy toys don't they?
Don't see many women messing about with angle grinders, power tools and being anal about their lawn stripes.
Maybe it's because women have more interesting things to do.🤔

prize for the most sexist comment I’ve read today

2chocolateoranges · 25/05/2026 16:38

We were just talking about that. We are sitting in the garden and for the last hour we have heard a drill, a lawnmower numerous strimmers . Just sit in your arse and enjoy the day off! 🤣

Wow. Would it be equally okay then to point out those girls who’ve never grown up continue as adults to play dress up (of human daughters rather than dolls) and putting together tea parties and lunches (real rather than fake)? No? Not the same? Why not?

"It feels like every time the stars align and we all get the day off and the weather is good, the morons appear with their power tools/bonfires."

How intolerant of you. People with different hobbies or a bank holiday project are not morons.

If you live in a street/ estate there will be people doing all sorts of things. ...

Jaffapedigree · 25/05/2026 16:41

Could be worse, the two neighbours across the road from me have decided that excessively loud bass music is de rigeur for the bank holiday. Started lunchtime, only just stopped, but for how long? Who knows, neither side work so no doubt it'll start up again after tea and continue into the wee hours.

PauliesWalnuts · 25/05/2026 16:41

1640 here and there’s a chain saw going off 😔

It would be intolerant if I complained on a random dreary weekend, or before 8pm. But there are masses of gardens here with people trying to enjoy some sunshine and loud drilling for hours is very selfish.

I feel for you. Mr Moronic here is still going. Can’t even open the windows, it’s so noisy!

I just think it’s part of the fact many men are selfish and simple don’t consider the needs of those around them before launching into whatever they want to do. Admittedly I’ve never seen a woman get power tools out at an inconvenient time.

I can't say we have been really noisy but for a lot of people Bank Holidays are the only time they can catch up on the major house tasks, largely due to working.

FernandoSor · 25/05/2026 16:46

If you work fulltime you only have weekends to do jobs around the house. Today is a long weekend so might as well take advantage.

TheFairyCaravan · 25/05/2026 16:46

DH has been doing DIY in the garden this weekend. Not today, though, he got it done yesterday and Saturday. He couldn’t have done what he was doing in the rain, he needed to use a power tool intermittently too. Most people are grateful for a long weekend if they need to get things done, especially a dry one.

Everyday I listen to yappy dogs in the garden behind me. I was woken yesterday morning, at 8am, by the kids opposite bouncing on their trampoline. Tomorrow someone else will be doing something else that’s noisy. We live on a housing estate so there’s never, ever going to be peace.

They should do it across normal weekends, or when it rains (which is 80% of the time). Today is clearly a day for sunshine and relaxation for people.

Or maybe it's because too many women expect men to do the DIY?

'Playing with toys' is a strange way to describe home maintenance.

Petrolitis · 25/05/2026 16:49

I work six days a week. Sundays are spent doing housework.

Bank Holidays are a rare chance to get additional jobs done. Ive been sweating in the garden for most of the day. Its hideous but it needs doing.

Maybe you're like one set of my neighbours whose garden looks like an upturned skip and they have rats.

Call me moronic all you like but I don't want to end up like them.

Not everyone gets every weekend off and even if they do they might have other commitments.

It is a normal day like any other. People are entitled to use their bank holiday to do home improvements that take more than a rainy weekend - especially if they need dry weather.

Both my neighbours and myself have had the power tools out today, only one of the neighbours is a man.

Or it is clearly a day for DIY 🤷‍♀️

Neither of us are power tool owners or DIY-ers (although I do the lawn mowing). I, too, would find it annoying but the weekend means different things and different jobs for people.
Loud music and those stupid scooters that fart as they race along are a step too far, IMO. These are purposefully and intrusively loud for no reason.

Exactly this, we've had a good blitz of the garden today, DH went out at 9 and cut and strimmed the grass, I've cut back the hedges and done the weeding, we had a break for a couple of hours around lunchtime to go to the garden centre and I've spent the rest of the afternoon potting and planting. The weekends have been so wet and miserable there's not been time to get it done when we both work. It's my birthday next weekend and I am looking forward to enjoying it in a lovely garden. DH was ready to go out with the mower at 8 but fear of a MN worthy neighbour had me curfewing him until 9

Tell me you've never mowed a lawn without telling me you've never mowed a lawn!

And how do you know it's just men being noisy with powered equipment? Can't women trim a hedge or cut a bit of decking?
Barking dogs and squealing kids are just as annoying as power tool noise imo.

Tableforjoan · 25/05/2026 16:52

Our neighbours have the builders in again much like yesterday. The random men keep staring out the windows. Amazing. Lovely the children and ourselves using the pool with weird men ogling 🙄

ImthatBoleyngirl · 25/05/2026 16:52

I have the same problem. It's been going on for 5 hours! God knows what they're doing. I always make sure I wait for days when the weather is cooler, that way I'm not disturbing anyone.

How am I meant to mow the lawn and trim the hedges in the rain?
