AIBU to resent neighbours doing DIY on bank holiday Monday?

It feels like every time the stars align and we all get the day off and the weather is good, the morons appear with their power tools/bonfires.

AIBU to expect them to knock it off for the day so for once we can all just bloody relax? This racket has been going on for 3 hours now and shows no sign of stopping (neighbour with his work bench and drills out)

Those boys who have never grown up love playing with noisy toys don't they?
Don't see many women messing about with angle grinders, power tools and being anal about their lawn stripes.
Maybe it's because women have more interesting things to do.🤔

What a ridiculous comment. My DH is currently plastering DDs bedroom in 33 degree heat on a rare bank holiday off (shift work) to provide us with a nice home and we are very, very grateful.
I’m pretty sure he has ‘more interesting’ things to do with his time but he chooses to do a nice thing for our family.

How am I meant to mow the lawn and trim the hedges in the rain?

Same way you normally do just in a raincoat? I do it! I don’t like getting wet but can’t think of a more suitable activity tbh - not dressed up, outside, messing around with plants.

I have the same problem. It's been going on for 5 hours! God knows what they're doing. I always make sure I wait for days when the weather is cooler, that way I'm not disturbing anyone.

Me too, I thought it was common courtesy but obviously not 😬

So you want me to use power tools outside in the rain? So you can lay in the sun......

Rachelshair · 25/05/2026 16:52

Tell me you've never mowed a lawn without telling me you've never mowed a lawn!

And how do you know it's just men being noisy with powered equipment? Can't women trim a hedge or cut a bit of decking?
Barking dogs and squealing kids are just as annoying as power tool noise imo.

Because I can see them out the window? Confused

That would be ideal, yes. Or just wait for a normal day - not a heatwave bank holiday?

Our neighbours have the builders in again much like yesterday. The random men keep staring out the windows. Amazing. Lovely the children and ourselves using the pool with weird men ogling 🙄

Yuck!

There's a bloke on our street who usually has a bonfire on any nice weekend. He hasn't done it today, but I was wondering if he would. Selfish f*er!

ilovesooty · 25/05/2026 16:56

Twisterlollies · 25/05/2026 16:47

They should do it across normal weekends, or when it rains (which is 80% of the time). Today is clearly a day for sunshine and relaxation for people.

Possibly they can't do the work when it's raining. I think you're unreasonable and intolerant.

LadyTable · 25/05/2026 16:48

Or maybe it's because too many women expect men to do the DIY?

'Playing with toys' is a strange way to describe home maintenance.

So much for gender equality hey

All the power tools in my house are mine. Stihl saw, impact wrench, circular saw, hammer drill etc @Fizzybluewater

Will happily come help your neighbours @Twisterlollies

You're either a moron or rage baiting

TheCurious0range · 25/05/2026 16:52

Exactly this, we've had a good blitz of the garden today, DH went out at 9 and cut and strimmed the grass, I've cut back the hedges and done the weeding, we had a break for a couple of hours around lunchtime to go to the garden centre and I've spent the rest of the afternoon potting and planting. The weekends have been so wet and miserable there's not been time to get it done when we both work. It's my birthday next weekend and I am looking forward to enjoying it in a lovely garden. DH was ready to go out with the mower at 8 but fear of a MN worthy neighbour had me curfewing him until 9

Enjoy your garden bday! Fingers crossed nobody will be mowing and strimming all day. Although I’m sure you won’t complain if they do.

prize for the most sexist comment I’ve read today

I totally agree. It’s pathetic.

Because I think annoyingly noisy and persistent activities should ideally not be carried out on one of our rare sunny bank holidays? Yep, rage bait, guilty as charged 🤥

Never met a woman who would know how to use an angle grinder..

Wow. Would it be equally okay then to point out those girls who’ve never grown up continue as adults to play dress up (of human daughters rather than dolls) and putting together tea parties and lunches (real rather than fake)? No? Not the same? Why not?

That’s the most pathetic argument I’ve ever seen on here. Get a life. 🤣

op, seriously we have a guy a few doors down from us who jet washes his driveway every single weekend, it’s so loud and goes on for hours, I’m surprised there’s any bricks left.

Delatron · 25/05/2026 16:58

Ha I am with you OP but I know I’m in the minority. Bank holidays are for rest, relaxation and maybe a bit of fun.

DH does not agree and tries to make me do boring tasks. He’s currently packing boxes and we don’t move for months. Some people have lost the art of rest and must keep busy at all
times..

I’ve cleaned the house and done a supermarket shop - no more drudgery for me!

Tableforjoan · 25/05/2026 16:59

Will admit we did our lawns at 9am. Get it done before too warm.

cravingicedwater · 25/05/2026 16:59

DIY is very different to having a bonfire.

Same. Mine is currently removing old plaster from the master bedroom walls.

Alwaystired23 · 25/05/2026 16:59

My husband has spent all day yesterday and today putting a new skylight window in. We've had the window since the end of last year. Its the first time it has been dry and he has had enough time off to do it.

Bank holidays are for whatever you want them to be for.
