AIBU to resent neighbours doing DIY on bank holiday Monday?

It feels like every time the stars align and we all get the day off and the weather is good, the morons appear with their power tools/bonfires.

AIBU to expect them to knock it off for the day so for once we can all just bloody relax? This racket has been going on for 3 hours now and shows no sign of stopping (neighbour with his work bench and drills out)

No, but I've had plenty of work done to my house over the last 4 years, I've still plenty more to do. As do my neighbours on both sides. One has yappy little dogs who carry on for hours. If I wanted perfect peace I'd live in a field.

4 years??? I defy all the ‘I love power tool noises’ posters here to say they would be absolutely fine with building works and renovations next door for 4 years? I mean what on earth are you doing, building it from scratch with your bare hands?!

I feel exactly the same about all bank holidays which make up a grand total of 2% of the year.

I’m sure they can find another day.

Really weird mentality to be honest. In the last four hours you’ve been raging you could’ve enjoyed your bank holiday

loislovesstewie · 25/05/2026 18:55

New kitchen, new bathroom, new shower room, walls plastered, new floors, new windows / doors. All doors both front /back and internal, painting, new flooring, carpets, chimney breast opened up. I think that's it so far.

2 hours… I hope your maths is better when doing DIY!

Tbh I would’ve just bought a plot and built from scratch

Good for you, I chose to do otherwise.

Some absolute arsehole has been using an angle grinder or cutting stone or something similar now for three straight days over the bank holiday weekend. Selfish tossers. One day, fine. All three days so nobody can be in their gardens or open their windows on the hottest weekend of the year?

SmudgeButt · 25/05/2026 18:58

nothing the matter with a bit of diy on a weekend, long or not, as long as it doesn't start too early or go on too late. some people do work so need to get things done when they can. and the sounds of lawnmowers and similar is just part of summer.

excessively loud noise though is just thoughtless. turn down the bass and turn down the volume please! we've got a big sport tournament over a mile from where we live and their thumping noise has gone on to 11 every evening.

Honestly I think some people are either totally unaware of other people existing, or they’re so self absorbed they don’t care.

I don’t really mind lawnmowers because it’s a discreet job that finishes after a certain amount of time, the gardens round here are not large, you can’t mow them all day. Plus the noise isn’t as shrill/cutting as power tools. We don’t mow our lawn on days like today but would on a regular weekend or after work.

Those boys who have never grown up love playing with noisy toys don't they?
Don't see many women messing about with angle grinders, power tools and being anal about their lawn stripes.
Maybe it's because women have more interesting things to do.🤔

Such as?

I’ve lived in my house 4 yrs and we’ve done a lot of work to it. It hasn’t taken that long though, nor have we used a power tool every weekend. The bloke behind us, with the yappy dogs, uses his most days when the weather is nice. Fuck knows what he’s doing but the noise is preferable to 4 yappy dachshunds all trying to make more noise than the others.

Most people are doing them in the garage. They can do that any time, rain or not.

Lucky you, but most people don't have a garage to do these tasks in.

The people doing DIY/mowing lawns etc arent the boring @Twisterlollies HTH

jumpingjohnny · 25/05/2026 19:40

Get some loop earbuds and get over it. People do DIY on bank holiday weekends, it's normal and it's expected.

N.B. I am female and can use an angle grinder.

No I won’t be able to hear anything then

So no difference!

6 pm is totally civilised

Or maybe it's because too many women expect men to do the DIY?

'Playing with toys' is a strange way to describe home maintenance.

Exactly - it could be said that behind every man with a power tool there is a woman saying 'get that DIY finished'.

They should do it across normal weekends, or when it rains (which is 80% of the time). Today is clearly a day for sunshine and relaxation for people.

Many jobs can’t be done in the rain.
We were out there using our saws and sanders this morning.
We worked from 9am to 1pm then knocked off for the day.

LoremIpsumCici · 25/05/2026 19:56

Most people are doing them in the garage.

A garage creates a bull horn effect, the noise of the tools is amplified.
